lighthammer··on Is a M4 MacBook Air worth it in todays modern technological world?
Recently purchased a 2020 i7 Macbook PRO with 1TB/32GB. The goal was to have Apple quality hardware and once MacOS is not supported years down the road, I can install Linux on it.

Great investment short and long term.

lighthammer··on Ask HN: How do you manage registrar login?
Let me edit the question to reflect home-targeted. Good callout.
lighthammer··on Kodi 21.0 "Omega"
Any recommendations for larger older televisions without "smart" features?
lighthammer··on Kodi 21.0 "Omega"
Former Plex user and current Jellyfin user. Never tried Kodi however happy to see more options in this space.
lighthammer··on Ask HN: How many of you are consciously downsizing your devices/going retro?
Does your T480s support 32GB? I know some ram is soldered and there is only one ram slot.

Or did you mean buy a T480 that has dual ram slots? 16x2

I also have an X61 w/ 8GB RAM and an SSD. Installed the Middleton BIOS. How is Ubuntu on it? I noticed the CPU always spikes to 100% when doing anything however it does not stay at 100%. Any limitations you run into for regular light usage?
lighthammer··on Ask HN: Any home security cameras that don’t force you to use their spyware app?
I have an Asustor NAS that I want to use Wi-Fi cameras to connect to using the built in surveillance center software. Does anyone have this setup?
lighthammer··on How Facebook and Instagram became marketplaces for child sex trafficking
That happened. Can’t recall the source however the UK was spying on US citizens and passing to the US through a “Five-Eyes” agreement.
lighthammer··on Which email service has the best spam filter?
Low spam with Fastmail (5 per week?) however mileage will vary.
lighthammer··on Ask HN: I Need to Talk to Someone
You are unique on earth. Cherish that. Put yourself out there as you have been doing. Even if it takes a few more months, you have a support system through your spouse.

Showcase your CV/skills online for others to find you. Opportunities will come. Stay strong. This is just temporary.

lighthammer··on Happy New Year HN! What are your plans for the new year?
I'm in the same boat as you and taking the same journey. Expanded my spirituality outlook after I stopped being active in the Mormon church. Also thanks to my wife who started a really interesting podcast. You may recognize some of the topics in your spiritual journey.

lighthammer··on Ask HN: How did you move on from past experiences?
Sorry to hear this and hope others can also learn from your advice.
lighthammer··on Ask HN: How did you move on from past experiences?
I still think about mistakes from 25 years ago. The only difference is I accept it finally and thinking about the past does not evoke much emotion anymore. All due to time.

To find closure, find something new that will occupy the energy from thinking about the past. Happy for you that you have closure and my 2022 bring much peace and blessings to you and your family.

lighthammer··on Wind whipped fires raging through Boulder County
My brother had a nice view of the fires. He also stated it might snow soon?
lighthammer··on macOS Setup after 15 Years of Linux
Thinkpad x220 with Xubuntu and a Mac Mini. My two daily drivers with a Windows VM sitting on a NAS.

Nice to have options.

lighthammer··on Happy New Year HN! What are your plans for the new year?
In a previous HN post, there was a discussion about separating career work from passion/hobbies. That hit home to me as I have been learning a new hobby (camera, audio, software) with trying to produce and support my wife's podcast. My goal in 2022 is to be better at production with updated equipment, software, and editing techniques.

Great discussions if you are into the topics of spirituality, health, ET/UFOs, and consciousness.

Happy New Year everyone. May 2022 bring happiness, success, and peace to you and your families.

lighthammer··on New 13-inch MacBook Pro
Aside from my 2015 Macbook Pro, I have a Lenovo X230 right next to it running Linux. The older Lenovo Thinkpads are treasures.
lighthammer··on New 13-inch MacBook Pro
Which laptop or desktop hardware are you using for your Linux setup.
lighthammer··on New 13-inch MacBook Pro
I'm still using the 2015 Macbook Pro (i7, 16GB RAM, 512 SSD) with an iPhone 6S to supplement.

So far, there has not been a reason to upgrade to any newer version of each. Maybe I'm just one of those in a small group that is content with the current experience.

lighthammer··on Options for non-engineers to build a startup
Appreciate the response. The good news is I have the broad tech fluency, work for a large tech company as a Program Manager, past life was system admin, etc. I just don't have the literal "programming/engineer" skillset to sit down and code out frontend/backend solution. I looked at Fiverr and HireAFreelancer.com however not sure how successful those solutions are.
lighthammer··on Ask HN: Has anyone successfully been able to completely quit using Google?
I have done this.

1. Migrated all mail, contacts, calendar to Fastmail. Runbox is another good option. Email is custom domain. 2. For my cellphone, I use Blackberry Classic running BB10.3 (No Android or iOS) 3. Removed all services from Google login and deleted the acct. I never logged back in. 4. My Browsers are "Brave" and "Firefox". 5. Email client is via Blackberry Hub. For desktop, its through Brave browser. I don't need a standalone email client. 6. Search is DuckDuckGo. Been using them for three years now. 7. Youtube is done through mobile Blackberry browser and/or NewPipe on Blackberry mobile. 8. OpenStreetMaps and Blackberry Maps is used.

Its been a great experience so far. Less clutter on my mind with services and products.

lighthammer··on I bought these domains. What can I do with them?
Its true that one needs to build a product first then worry about the marketing. I just happen to grab these two domains so I kinda skipped the product part first.

Thanks for your suggestions/comments.
