light3··on Addict Pride?
Does this mean 'exercise' to strengthen prefrontal cortex helps against addiction?
light3··on The Latest On Intelligence
Nitpicking but this seems like a contradiction: "It is noteworthy, for example, that at a given level of IQ, Chinese have smaller frontal cortexes than Americans (Chee, Zheng, Goh, & Park, 2011), although Chinese brains as a whole may be larger than those of Americans (Rushton, 2010). Even with brain size equated between Chinese and Americans, the frontal cortex is larger in Americans (Chee et al., 2011)."
light3··on How to nap
I usually fold my arms on the desk and sleep with my head down, you have to be careful to make sure you let enough oxygen through and also to not cut circulation from your arm for too long. If I sleep for too long this way my arms become numb, but sometimes I'm so tired I just don't care =)
light3··on Why do humans procrastinate?
Hey this is interesting, from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blood_sugar: "Intake of alcohol causes an initial surge in blood sugar, and later tends to cause levels to fall. Also, certain drugs can increase or decrease glucose levels."

light3··on Previewing Windows 8 (Video)
All this functionality requires a touch screen, thats fine on mobile devices, but what about on a desktop pc - what will be the cost of big touch-screen monitors?

I guess a really cool idea is to have a small touchscreen you use for control, in combination with an existing/bigger screen for the actual display.

light3··on This Guy Has My MacBook
Is it really expensive to implement?
light3··on 1 in 6 Russian entrepreneurs are in jail, 1 in 3 prisoners are businessmen
Its not really fair to compare PRC with Taiwan, they started off on completely different footings. From http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Taiwan:

"When the KMT government fled to Taiwan it brought the entire gold reserve and the foreign currency reserve of mainland China to the island, which stabilized prices and reduced hyperinflation.[citation needed] More importantly, as part of its retreat to Taiwan, the KMT brought the intellectual and business elites from mainland China.[63] The KMT government instituted many laws and land reforms that it had never effectively enacted on mainland China. The government also implemented a policy of import-substitution, attempting to produce imported goods domestically. Much of this was made possible through US economic aid, subsidizing the higher cost of domestic production."

China in 1949 just started baby booming after the war. I'm not saying whether Communism is better or worse, but it does tend to drive away those already in positions of wealth and power.

light3··on The Australian Housing Bubble Has Popped
That's a very bold thing to claim, Australia is a very big place, cities such as Sydney and Melbourne were doing well last year, Sydney still reported positive growth for the last quarter.

Although the Jan/Feb lending figures were indeed indicative of a slowdown, for NSW(where Sydney is) at least, they have rebounded somewhat in the latest AFG figures: http://corporate.afgonline.com.au/idc/groups/public/document...

AFG is a mortgage broker responsible for 10% of lending in Australia, their figures are updated monthly and are a good leading indicator of the slower official government stats.

Easy with a calculator yes, without one, not so much.
light3··on Harvard's 1899 Entrance Exam [pdf]
Of course if you're doing it by trial and error on paper it is pointless tedium. But I'm sure that the point of doing these exercises were not bore you to death, but to really make you understand arithmetic so you can do most given problems faster. If all you knew was how to multiply and divide numbers by hand, that problem would take you hours to solve!

A great example is the section 'lucky numbers' in Feynman's book:

light3··on Formerly good at math, but I've lost my skills. Any advice to grow them back?
Ahh indeed, I thought there were 5!=120 ways to order 3M and 2F, but apparently there are only 5!/(2!3!) = 10 ways: {MMMFF,MMFFM,MFFMM,FFMMM,FMMMF,MFMMF,MMFMF,FMMFM,MFMFM,FMFMM}. I made the mistake of thinking you can distinguish between individual males/females.
light3··on Formerly good at math, but I've lost my skills. Any advice to grow them back?
No, if I use * with no space it doesn't show.
light3··on Formerly good at math, but I've lost my skills. Any advice to grow them back?
Is the answer: 4x3x2x10x9 / (14x13x12x11x10) * 5! Is there some easier way to solve this?
light3··on Blockbattle.net - multiplayer tetris / TetriNET using JavaScript and Tornado
Bugs/changes from original:

Sometimes at the edges if you turn a piece full circle, the position changes(this shouldn't happen).

More powerful special blocks from original removed, when you clear 4 lines with a special block in it you only get 1 as opposed to 4 special blocks in the original. Both these changes will favor those with faster laying speed.

Keyboard repeat/delay is too long, would be great if these were customizable.

Suggestions: Match people with similar ppm Show the winner(wasn't obvious to me)

light3··on Blockbattle.net - multiplayer tetris / TetriNET using JavaScript and Tornado
Big Tetrinet fan here, I used to play the modified version Tetrifast a lot(no new block delay) which is the same as this, you can lay blocks with speeds of 120+ ppm(pieces per min) depending on the keyboard repeat and initial delay settings(usually needs to be reduced). One flaw I see is there is only a key to turn the pieces one direction, and not he other, this should be implemented to increase speed of laying. Also, it would be cool to have customizable keys for those of us who don't use standard, I tend to use(may not be optimal):

down: drop, e/r : turn piece left/right, up: faster descent

Unfortunately very very few people play Tetrinet anymore, I wish you the best to revive what was a great game!

light3··on From Redmond with Love - IE team sends cake for FF4
So I've been tracking my karma on this post, its gone something like

1 -> 2 -> 0 -> 5 -> 2 -> 4 -> 0

Appears to be a submartingale(maybe) Ok I stuffed up the experiment by posting this, the sequence after the 5th observations are no longer independent and invalidated.

light3··on MIT is a national treasure
"he never got he never got a high school degree"

This sentence tripped me up. I vividly remember some of the more boring classes where you end up staring at the clock, for some subjects I actually tried to put in the least effort possible to achieve 80%. I wish I had those years back to do follow something I really enjoyed doing.

light3··on Why Fukushima made me pro nukes
This chart is on wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Nuke,_coal,_gas_generating...

But that's sidetracking, instead of ridiculous citation wars, what I was really asking for was some examples of:

'Renewables can be vastly improved, several advances have already been made just not fully capitalized on'

light3··on Why Fukushima made me pro nukes
Firstly I didn't ask for citation, I asked for examples.

Secondly, I gave my opinion which I think is based on accepted facts, if you insist on citations you can find them on Wikipedia. You just gave a statement, wrote your proposition on that statement, with nothing to back it up.

light3··on Why Fukushima made me pro nukes
I don't see what's so snide about 'some greens', the Greens are a political party in Australia, they have a strong anti-nuclear stance as I recall(might be wrong).
light3··on Why Fukushima made me pro nukes
'Renewables can be vastly improved, several advances have already been made just not fully capitalized on' such as?

I think the major advantage of nuclear is its cost efficiency and low pollution.
