liftm··on I built an open-source, AI-powered solar panel that's 95% optimal
Does the article do an actual evaluation of the performance of its approach compared to whatever arcastroe suggested?

You're forgetting about orientation (and altitude)? The observed position also varies a bit with air pressure and temperature, but iirc that's less than a few degrees. Anyway, you grab yourself a nice ephemeris library like skyfield, do a little bit of your_location.at(now).observe(sun).apparent().altaz('standard'), and there's your angles.

The trickiest part might be getting an accurate time on whatever cheap controller your using.

Bubblesort so dangerous. Not exactly the best headline, is it?

(Sadly, it seems like both benchmarks are flawed.)

The first thing a 5 MB upx-compressed binary does when executed is uncompress itself to 15~30 MB of memory, right? So what does the on-disk binary size have to do with my L3 cache?
liftm··on A German school forked FluffyChat, a Matrix messenger
(They likely didn't fork it to make it standalone, you can do that from the config. The article doesn't mention that as a reason, either.)

One thing that reads a bit weird are passages like "We hid state messages […] from our client" or "We also hid the option to create groups".

So if I grab the token from the client (or extract the implementation for decrypting their QR codes), I can still do it through the API? Hmm…

liftm··on Go is about to get faster
Is there anything in Go that will help prevent those things that definitely can never happen?
liftm··on I'm making a Typescript type-checker in Rust
Ironic. Rust is saving others from slow compilation speed, but can't save itself.

> - Horizontal scrolling because it isn't properly responsive.

It actually is properly responsive: it has horizontal scrolling on desktop too, and by just the exact amount, no matter what the window size is. (At least on FF.)

Why use PIC if you can just write your own relocator? https://fasterthanli.me/series/making-our-own-executable-pac...
liftm··on You can't copy code with memcpy
If you can allocate memory in a foreign process, I'd guess you could also change the permissions on that memory… So write first, then change to executable.

(VirtualProtectEx looks like it would do that. Never used winapi, not sure.)

liftm··on Nature does not use propellers. So why do people?
Nah. Trains e.g. sure are heavy, but they're also ridiculously energy efficient when it comes to moving stuff around. And yet they're also typically faster than any land animal.

Building roads or tracks doesn't make sense for animals, and freely rotating parts difficult on larger organisms. On the flip side, our human engineering often hasn't put energy efficiency so high up the priority list.

liftm··on Intel seems awfully scared of Graviton2. Why pay for this ad on Google?
It remains that easy until your Go/Rust project relies on libraries written in other languages, say C.

(This holds true for JS/python/… too.)
