Yeah. I love programming. I even love the business side where you solve real problems for people.

What I don't love is the constant pressure to just deliver faster and faster. So forcing these chatbots on us fill a need for the CEOs and manager types that just want to DELIVER DELIVER DELIVER, but the benefit for the people that are forced to use them are marginal at best. There are some valid use cases for LLM-based tools, but businesses mostly aren't interested in those because it doesn't make line go up. Streamlining operations? Nah. Shove a Chatbot where it doesn't belong so you can try to get a billion dollar investment? NOW WE ARE COOKING

C-suites and managers don't give a shit about quality unless they feel the pain. That's the most important thing I've learned. If you can find a way to push the pain up to the people that make the decisions, the more likely they are incentivised to improve it. It doesn't matter if you see a problem that takes 2 days to fix coming a year away - they do not care until the application crashes because of it.

Office politics sucks.

When stuff was getting too complicated, I looked for ways to make things simpler.

Developers have spent decades trying to figure out ways to make things simpler, less code the better, only to throw it all out the window because chatbot go brrrrrr.

Nothing wrong with getting a robot plumber, I would do it too. But I wouldn't go around doing all my friend's plumbing and/or completely redo all of the plumbing in my home with it and then call myself a plumber (notwithstanding that plumbers are licensed professionals).

If it means anything, I always make sure to send in a report when it crashes.

I use Opensuse tumbleweed and update compulsively so I should have the newest package versions with all of the latest fixes too.

Editing text files (code), executing simple programs in the terminal (work is done on my Mac Studio, not my personal desktop), browsing the web with Firefox and playing the odd Steam game. I use the stock Opensuse Tumbleweed panel setup and don’t even tweak the animation speeds or configured effects.

So I don’t think I’m holding it wrong.

My hardware is old-ish (Ryzen 1800x and a Vega56) but I’ve had no issues in literally any other environment, use stock drivers with no customizations, no custom kernels or anything, and only with packages from the official repos, so I don’t believe I should have many major quirks. Heck, I don’t even have Bluetooth or wifi enabled.

KDE has come a long way but I still find it just too buggy to be usable as a daily driver…which is unfortunate because I don’t really like Gnome either but it’s the least worst of all the real options at the moment. Plasma will crash on me 2-3 times per day just doing regular things but I can’t even remember the last time Gnome crashed on me. The ghost of KDE4 still haunts me.

So if you don't like plumbing, don't get a robot to do your plumbing and then claim you're a "vibe plumber".

I just did it today with the current ISO you can download from Microsoft themselves. Then installed all the Windows updates, graphics drivers and even enrolled in the free extended security support. Then I just uninstalled Cortana and Copilot manually. Ezpz

Be warned that they employ extreme amounts of dark patterns to try and trick you into converting the offline account into an online one.

I went to school long before LLMs were even a Google Engineer's brianfart for the transformer paper and the way I took exams was already AI proof.

Everything hand written in pen in a proctored gymnasium. No open books. No computers or smart phones, especially ones connected to the internet. Just a department sanctioned calculator for math classes.

I wrote assembly and C++ code by hand, and it was expected to compile. No, I never got a chance to try to compile it myself before submitting it for grading. I had three hours to do the exam. Full stop. If there was a whiff of cheating, you were expelled. Do not pass go. Do not collect $200.

Cohorts for programs with a thousand initial students had less than 10 graduates. This was the norm.

You were expected to learn the gd material. The university thanks you for your donation.

I feel like i'm taking crazy pills when I read things about trying to "adapt" to AI. We already had the solution.

If my json is too complicated to be readable I just use jq to find the things I want out of it.
