liendolucas··on Linux Basics for Hackers (2019)
Thanks for pointing it out! I visually checked the books on the shelf but my eyes tricked me and confused "rr" by "rn".
liendolucas··on Linux Basics for Hackers (2019)
For anyone just starting I highly recommend: "Linux Pocket Guide" and if moving forward adopting linux as a daily driver "Efficient Linux At The Command Line". Both books by Daniel J. Barnett.

Even if you're a seasoned Linux user you will learn a lot from those books.

liendolucas··on Microsoft builds MacBook Pro rival with NVIDIA-powered Surface Laptop Ultra
> Made for a kind of work that does not fit in a standard laptop.

Yeah, sure... And that kind of work is...???

The only device I'm still happy to own from them is the Classic IntelliMouse.

For me, anything else, be hardware or software, I stay very far away from them.

liendolucas··on It's hard to justify buying a Framework 12
I think this is an unfair comparison. We are comparing a company valued on the order of trillion dollars with a very small company that is trying to put something different on the market.

And yes sure, Apple is going to do way better than probably lots of manufacturers out there.

From an OS standpoint is also a comparison that cannot be done. We are comparing MacOS with a Linux/Windows machine, which are all completely different beasts.

One last and not minor point. By choosing Apple you're choosing not only to be locked down at the OS level but also on the hardware, which at least for me is a huge "no".

liendolucas··on AMD pulls a bait-and-switch on Linux users with Vivado licensing changes
AMD business should be selling FPGA hardware. The software suite should come for free. If it doesn't then people should not purchase AMD FPGAs.

It is absurd that in 2026 you have to pay for such tools. It feels like buying a propietary compiler in 80's or 90's.

No one wants that anymore.

liendolucas··on Can we have the day off?
Excellent. Besides the article, I've always questioned myself many many times how is it that the whole world has agreed that we have to work 5 days and rest 2. Why is it that, why can't be 4 and 3? I truly wish that in general we work a bit less. Even if it is not a whole day off, then having a workday of around 6 hours would mean that you could still have some free time for yourself.
liendolucas··on I'm Tired of Talking to AI
If this is already happening among adults, what's left for the current or next generation? Kids that can no longer think by themselves? I believe this is really scary.
liendolucas··on 80386 Microcode Disassembled
So what you actually need is a program that navigates through the huge image of the die and detects if the structure that is looking at is a 1 or a 0? This at the fundamental level is a cross between machine learning and image processing?
liendolucas··on 80386 microcode disassembled
Thanks for sharing, will definitely watch it!
liendolucas··on 80386 microcode disassembled
> ...they mentioned that it would be interesting to get high resolution images of the 80386 die and try to extract the microcode from it.

Can someone explain how is that from a high resolution image of the die the microcode can be reconstructed? I'm really curious, what's the process? Is the output some sort of Verilog? Does the process involve recognizing each and every transistor and model a circuit from that? I'm fascinated that something like this is possible at all...

liendolucas··on No more JetBrains products for me
I wish that software is constantly updated and tuned for the past, not the future. I find quite ridiculous that we only keep pouring ram, disk, processor and yet tools lag behind. How is that possible?
liendolucas··on Twin brothers wipe 96 government databases minutes after being fired
I can only think of a scenario where this is still valid: spying.

The minimum one can do is have a different randomized password for every service on a possibly completely offline password manager.

Yes, you will depend on a password manager at all times, but at least the blast radius is minimized to the affected service.

liendolucas··on Screenshots of Old Desktop OSes
> And because of fashion...

That's basically the curse. Fucking fashion. If that human concept wouldn't exist, UIs today would be way way better. But no, we have to keep changing it forever and with each iteration worse and worse. UI enshittification at its pinnacle.

liendolucas··on Screenshots of Old Desktop OSes
NextStep interface still looks sleek and timeless. No doubt a decaying Apple went to acquire them. Having seen some NextStep demos online, it was way ahead of its time. Few weeks ago just started to use WindowMaker again on one of my VMs.
liendolucas··on Google Chrome silently installs a 4 GB AI model on your device without consent
Has anyone tried out to chmod 400 the download directories? Perhaps that prevents the whole thing to work...

I haven't touched a Chrome browser in a very long time and I just hope that other vendors don't take a similar route.

liendolucas··on VS Code inserting 'Co-Authored-by Copilot' into commits regardless of usage
So, you're reverting because of "bugs", not because you had massive backfire? Do you understand that no one wants this, right?
liendolucas··on VS Code inserting 'Co-Authored-by Copilot' into commits regardless of usage
Under which circumstances can you ever approve something like this?

This goes beyond incompetence. Either you do not understand what important information a commit holds or what seems way more plausible to me is that Microsoft simply decided to try this out and see how people would react.

> There was no ill intent by evil corporation...

I will ever in my life buy that from Microsoft.

liendolucas··on VS Code inserting 'Co-Authored-by Copilot' into commits regardless of usage
What a shitshow. People should stop using as many Microsoft products as possible and move on. Seriously, it's the best silent feedback that can ever be delivered in cases like these.
liendolucas··on The West forgot how to make things, now it’s forgetting how to code
I still code daily without any coding assistance mostly because I believe this is the way to not forget how things are done, even trivial things.

My main point against using AI is that I do not want to depend basically on anything when I'm in front of the screen (obviously not including, documentation, books, SO and alike).

I closely see people that are 100% dependent on AI for literally everything, even the most trivial daily tasks and I find that truly scarly because it means that brain effort drops drammatically to a minimum level. To be stolen mental effort is not a minor thing.

Giving away that at least for me means to become a dependent zombie. Knowledge comes basically from manual trial/error almost daily.

Technology being technology if anything has shown us that we can be pushed and manipulated in every single conceivable way. And in my opinion depending on AI is the ultimate way for companies to penetrate and manipulate a very delicate ability of a human being: to think and wonder about things.

liendolucas··on Google plans to invest up to $40B in Anthropic
And the day you don't have that drug what do you do? If anything you are training people to become dependent on one or more subscription services.
liendolucas··on France to ditch Windows for Linux to reduce reliance on US tech
All countries should follow suit.

Nations and individuals can't depend or be held hostages of a handful of companies on the other side of the Atlantic that have the will to do whatever they want with their customers data.

This is the right path to follow and wish that in upcoming years this initiative becomes a reality across the globe. Long success for Linux and all BSDs!

liendolucas··on Microsoft is employing dark patterns to goad users into paying for storage?
From the WinUtil screenshots presented in the article I'm absolutely shocked about all the things that you presumably want to turn off or delete to have a "clean" Windows (to some extent if that's possible at all). It's also ridiculous that you need an external tool to easily disable/remove/uninstall every single thing you don't want .

I haven't used Windows since many many years ago and the few times I sit down to interact with someone else's computer I suffer so much that after a few seconds I simply give up, I can't stand anything about it.

If someone were to use Windows, besides WinUtil, are there a set of recommended open source scripts to clean up all the shit out of a fresh Windows installation?

Just to be aware in case of emergency or extreme need...

liendolucas··on Show HN: Brutalist Concrete Laptop Stand (2024)
It's too much concrete for me, but hey, not every day you see an original and unique piece like this!
liendolucas··on Microsoft hasn't had a coherent GUI strategy since Petzold
If you become a power user you realize that nothing matches the power of the command line. And at that point you also realize that are better OSes that allow you to fully explode the true computing power that is terribly limited and constrained by a GUI.
liendolucas··on Author of "Careless People" banned from saying anything negative about Meta
What it would be terrific is that people that have access to Sheryl Sandberg in public repeteadly ask her: "Do you still invite your employees to sleep on your private jet's bed?" as reminder about how fucked up her mind and demands are.

Same should be applied to the other nasty members of Zuck's inner past/present circle.

My inner guts tell me that all these freaks just try out these out of place demands to see if people without their money and power would actually knee and say "yes" to every request that comes out of their mouth.

liendolucas··on Author of "Careless People" banned from saying anything negative about Meta
The book is so good that once picked up you can't stop reading it. I've left Facebook many many many years ago and ever came back. The book just reinforced my aversion to any product that's out there that is designed to waste your time and manipulate your head. I sincerely hope that whoever ruled the gag on the author reverses the decision and at least reads the book and understands how nasty and evil Facebook is.
liendolucas··on Artemis computer running two instances of MS outlook; they can't figure out why
Is this actually true? What's next? A BSOD? I would have ever ever in my life bet that Microsoft software could be shipped in a spacecraft carrying human beings. Unbeliveable.
liendolucas··on From Proxmox to FreeBSD and Sylve in Our Office Lab
Perhaps I'm misunderstanding, but wouldn't that case be covered by simply putting some vms under a vnet and others on another vnet and make them talk to each other? I can't also understand what you mean by "fresh bare metal hardware". In either case you don't need bare metal, being a top level vm or a nested one.
liendolucas··on From Proxmox to FreeBSD and Sylve in our office lab
Honestly asking, in which cases nested virtualization is useful?
liendolucas··on Copilot edited an ad into my PR
Not surprised at all, just another enshitified product by Microsoft. Carry on.
