lfowles··on The US Army’s costly quest for the perfect radio
Disclaimer: At my previous job, I was several degrees disconnected from SCA/radio contracts (worked on test sets for those radio systems).

Being over budget, late, and not meeting requirements seems to be an infectious quality. However, it's not like many companies are set up to deal with winning these contracts. Do you choose the company that's more likely to have a more complete product but possibly be unable to support it in a couple of years? Or the one that can do decades of support (including replacing obsoleted hardware) but has a reputation for being late, overbudget, and half done?

lfowles··on Benz remotely controlled vehicle stuck in cruise control mode for 1h at 120km/h
Quite possible! I'm currently in Kansas or I'd be out finding some hills right now to test this further.

As mentioned in my other comment, 2009 Pontiac Vibe and 2013 Fiat 500. The Pontiac actually has manual windows, so I wouldn't be surprised if other corners were cut for simpler systems..

Interesting all of the minor variations between cars. Both cars (manual transmission) will also shut off cruise control if I even think about pressing the clutch, although rarely the Pontiac will forget to do that until the clutch is disengaged and the engine is revving high. :)

2009 Pontiac and a 2013 Fiat, so relatively modern.

Couple of possibilities then, I suppose:

* They do work towards a set speed, but I'm too impatient and reset the cruise control before they achieve it.

* Cruise control operates differently on cars with manual transmissions. I've never actually observed cruise control behavior in an automatic because it's been broken on the automatics I've previously owned.

Cruise control on both of my cars is closer to "set throttle" than "set speed". Neither will increase throttle to keep speed when going up a hill for example.
lfowles··on Unreal Engine 4.19 Released
Agreed on the visual programming system. I went into UE4 dev thinking I'd work mostly in C++, but now I'm basically only doing enough in C++ to get something exposed to blueprints so I can prototype faster.
lfowles··on Kerbal Space Program Extension Now Available
Even then, by the point I put a few ships in orbit by hand I downloaded a couple of the mods that help by giving TWR stats during building and automate orbit/landing so I could focus on setting up my interplanetary satellite network :)
lfowles··on Ask HN: Best way to learn modern C++?
Probably Tour of C++ if you're already familiar with older C++. (Or just get the book it's taken from, C++ Programming Language 4th Ed.)

Looking for systems programming or other interesting software development opportunities (ideally C++, but also skilled with Python). Previously spent 5 years writing software for x86 and ARM embedded Linux radio testing equipment.

Since then, I've spent several months getting my feet wet with Unreal Engine 4[0], learning basics of Rust and Haskell, and I'm currently enrolled in the Udacity Robotics Software Engineer Nanodegree. I'm always willing to learn for the job. A project highlight from my Github: interpreting output from a Deskcycle to get cadence data[1]. Even if I'm not what you're looking for and you just want to chat about any of my projects, send me an email!

lfowles··on How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the State Machine
I prefer having nominal intermediate states just for debugging purposes. "What am I doing now? Does being in START imply it's already started the process? Does being in RUNNING imply the process was completed successfully?" vs "What am I doing now? In motion!"

In the example given, I'd probably stick to a single intermediate state and let the language work as my implicit state machine for the internals.

Depends a lot on the boilerplate required to insert states though, my preferences owe a lot to the HFSM implementations I've used in the past.

lfowles··on Swatch Internet Time (1998)
Looking further back, it was present in Phantasy Star Online!
lfowles··on Lifeguards use a drone to help rescue people in danger of drowning
I think this was posted to HN a few years back: http://spotthedrowningchild.com/
lfowles··on Tesla Model 3 Sets New EV Cannonball Run Record
A racetrack would be a completely different test of skill. From what I understand a cannonball run is largely planning and endurance.

Edit: Not to discount the idea that it is reckless to do it on public roads...

Why do the remote positions not have USD compensation offered as well?

Looking for systems programming or other interesting software development opportunities. Previously wrote software for x86 and ARM embedded Linux radio testing equipment. Spent several months doing a deep dive into game development with Unreal Engine 4[0]. I'm a quick learner and am willing to pick up whatever tech is necessary for the position. A recent project highlight from my Github: interpreting output from a Deskcycle to get cadence data[1]. lfowles··on UK Cops Want to Use AI to Spot Child Abuse But It Mistakes Desert Pics for Nudes
From the source: false, true, true, false, true, true, false, false, true, true, true, false, true, false (go left to right, top to bottom)
lfowles··on Sitting May Be Bad for Your Heart
I had one at my old job, but my current desk is too short to use it without bonking my knees.

If interested, I made a little tool to gather cadence data on a computer instead of using the provided monitor: https://github.com/lfowles/deskcycle

lfowles··on Dynamicland
Ah OK, I had to scan the page a few times to realize it wasn't a visually interpreted form of Scratch.
lfowles··on Dynamicland
I'm looking for more details as well, the idea fascinates me. Each program looks to be a code printout, so I'm not quite grasping how changing code works with just an "editor token".
lfowles··on How to not waste time on a side project when trying to get a job
My "side projects" have generally been learning exercises and almost exclusively for fun, but maybe that's an uncommon view.

FTA: > Side note: learning a skill isn’t a side project, you have to ship something.

lfowles··on Boardgame.io: State management and more for turn-based games
> I think if one truly took this approach to the logical end, they would end up creating their own specialized board game programming language.

That's what I was planning on saying. A set of discrete rules detailed enough to represent most board games would end up looking a lot like an interpreted programming language.

lfowles··on Quantum Game with Photons
Still trying to reconcile what's going on in level 2. Do I need to accomplish this over multiple attempts?
lfowles··on Why don’t software development methodologies work? (2014)
Not a perfect analog, but how about mise en place in the cooking world?

Also famously, Kanban originated at Toyota for manufacturing.

lfowles··on The JOS Window System
Ah finally! XSLT for the JSON age :)
lfowles··on Introducing Messenger Kids
I regularly keep in touch with quite a few coworkers that have moved away. Not to mention college friends who all went their separate ways.

lfowles··on Thunderstorms Observed Triggering Nuclear Reactions in the Sky
Yes, but the intent was to monitor Russian nuclear testing, not just measure gamma radiation in general.
lfowles··on Thunderstorms Observed Triggering Nuclear Reactions in the Sky
I seem to remember from the Las Vegas Atomic Museum that lightning would indeed trigger false positives in early gamma ray detecting satellites.

Edit: The article does note that it was picked up by satellites before but there's conclusive evidence now.
