that's a great talk. I like how most of the bugs within the OS logic as opposed to overflow bugs. It does lend itself to the stability of the exploits

levigross··on Ken Olsen, co-founder of Digital Equipment Corp., died at 84
It's a shame that every time I mention DEC to anyone, very few of them know what I am talking about...

I enjoyed using VAX/VMS and admire DEC's contributions to modern ComSci.

You will be missed!

levigross··on Forget Quora, New York's Stack Overflow Is Killing It
if you were the main source behind the movie "the social network" you can make a door handle and you will still get press.
levigross··on So You Just Bought Sex.com For $13 Million – Now What?
1. Open up a website for students. Student EXchange = sex.com 2. Stack EXchange can get a shorter name or use them as a short URL.

Having worked with sites like Groupon, I know how much research some of these companies do before they feature products (the loss of business if something goes wrong...)

It's a research fail and a noble recovery by Groupon

levigross··on [dead]
I agree they acted nobly but mistakes like this make you look like an amateur company. Such sites need to do their research!
levigross··on [dead]
It's a company failure hence "Groupon fail"
levigross··on [dead]
I think it's a failure to make sure that the product that they sold was legit. They are such a powerful site that products should be throughly investigated before they go up.

That said it is nice and neat what they did...

levigross··on Ask HN: Anyone use a project package service like Atlassian?
Try http://www.codebasehq.com/
levigross··on [dead]
It's sad but after coming in on a few "clean up" operations within the company I found quite a few companies with job interview practices like this.

It was intended as a pun....

levigross··on [dead]
It's a pun but sadly true we feel is this is the root cause of some people coming into the office with glowing resumes and not having a clue on how to code.
levigross··on How to choose a software development firm
Many people ask me what I look for in a development firm. This should help you out.
levigross··on What’s your favorite Django app?
I hope django.contrib moves forward in the right direction and these makes these apps reusable
levigross··on What’s your favorite Django app?
I hope they start to use a DVCS to kickstart the development.
levigross··on What’s your favorite Django app?
They are trying to fix this with class based views etc... I hope it works becauseif not they risk losing their userbase to a better framework
levigross··on Gevent: the Good, the Bad, the Ugly
The advantage here is the usage of Libevent which makes it only listen when a eventlet sends back a message. It's essentially using the same tech (event wise) as NGINX.

Because it's using event's it has not blocking IO. But is limited when the tasks are CPU bound

levigross··on Using the Cython Compiler to write fast Python code
There is a fear that many startups have in using Python that when they do grow they will have to move large parts of their code into C due to speed limitations of the CPython interpreter

I feel that PyPy and Cython alleviate that fear.

levigross··on 37Signals Doubles Price for Basecamp
I signed up yesterday for a friend of mine and when I saw the cheapest plan at $49.95 I just grabbed the free one and upgraded to the $24 plan.

I thought it was a glitch in the pricing screen (and my friend still thinks I am seeing things).

levigross··on Poll: What programming language do you use for your app/startup?
I like Go, it gives me the feeling of python in a compiled language (also goroutines are great)
levigross··on Poll: What programming language do you use for your app/startup?
I agree, Python is our language of choice as well. The logic we use is that it's in most/all of the cases the lesser of the two evils.

You can always argue "Oh! you are doing "that" use <said language> it's amazing and has that built in." However we find that Python focuses a lot on the programmer as well (white space etc...) and that was the tipping point.
