R is a general programming language with a huge library of mostly statistical analysis routines.
SQL is a way to get data in/out of a database
You might want to use SQL for trivial analyses, and anything more, maybe use R. But you can use SQL from R to get the data.
It is an art. Like writing awesome code, etc. practice, practice, and working with experienced people is key.
This is mostly a problem for unsophisticated players and exaggerated hype originating from players that support tracking view ability, etc.
spend the time to find folks that know R or similar and have written extensions. You want doers, not academics.
As others have said, key is to empower us todo more in less time. Case studies, references, etc.

Great software is being written by great individuals that move it forward, pretty indecent of whatever process a company tries to use. To me a process must not get in the way or productivity and creativity.
Computer scientists mostly don't know about sampling and make easy problems hard. Statisticians mostly fail at simply getting the data in a format they need.
