lessthanseventy··on For a legally blind player, Far Cry 6’s accessibility options are empowering
Most visually disabled people retain some usable vision. The levels for qualifying for a driver's license are different than the definition of legally blind. For instance, my state requires vision correctable to at least 20/40 in one eye, and a FOV of at least 60 degrees to drive without special bioptic lenses (basically a monocular that attaches to a pair of glasses.) To be classified as legally blind (at least in the United States) you must have vision that cannot be corrected to better than 20/200, or a field of view of less than 20 degrees. It gets complicated because you can be on disability even if you don't meet the definition of "legally blind" if you have vision issues that cause you to be unable to work. This is on a case by case basis and requires a hearing in front of a disability judge.

20/200 means that a person with that level of vision is able to read something from a 20 foot distance that someone with 20/20 vision would be able to read from 200 feet away.

lessthanseventy··on Ask HN: Webdev with poor/deteriorating vision. What can I pivot into?
I have a condition called juvenile retinoschisis. It's very similar to macular degeneration. My overall vision varies between 20/80ish and 20/120ish depending on the day. After having around ten different surgeries to correct a few retinal detachments I'm left with double vision, ghosting, distortions in my visual field, floaters, near constant pain, and extreme light sensitivity. My last job was front end developer in a React codebase, and I'm currently working as a full stack dev in Elixir/Phoenix. It can be done. You will find new ways to adapt.

lessthanseventy··on Incomplete List of Mistakes in the Design of CSS
I guess something like:

  foo bar {
    ...styles
  }

  foo bar baz {
    ...more styles
  }

  foo bar baz > bim {
    ...even more
  }

  foo bar baz > bim:not(bop) {
    ...stuff
  }
instead of a more SCSS like syntax:

  foo bar {
  ...styles
    & baz {
      ...more styles
      & > bim {
        ...even more
        &:not(bop)
          ...stuff
        }
      }
    }
  }
SCSS seems like it gets out of control after a while though without rigor from the developers. The last app I worked on had a half-assed SCSS approach that started off with a decent base, and then got tacked onto with a ton of ad-hoc styles that weren't nested where they "belonged." Inconsistent usage of paddings/margins everywhere. It was a mess.
lessthanseventy··on Next Gen Static Blogging
As a visually impaired person please don't. I like being able to resize text and still have the document flow properly instead of endlessly scrolling back and forth.
lessthanseventy··on I3: Improved Tiling Window Manager
I have configured i3 to be a bootleg version of PaperWM[0]. Everything tabbed by default. Alt+h & Alt+l switch windows in the current workspace and Alt+j & Alt+k switch workspaces. I can still flip to tiling mode if I need to see things side by side but I find myself rarely needing to. I have really poor vision so my use case is going to be different than most but this works super well for me. I'm only ever a couple keystrokes away from whatever I need to see.

Just as poorly. The women get it worse.
lessthanseventy··on Ask HN: How to deal with an abusive co-worker?
Losing my job would very much be an issue. It's just unfortunate that he has been getting away with this kind of behavior for so long precisely because reporting him is fraught with peril and people have just allowed him to continue without saying anything.
lessthanseventy··on Ask HN: How to deal with an abusive co-worker?
I've done all of those things but thanks for assuming my life has been easy.
lessthanseventy··on Ask HN: How to deal with an abusive co-worker?
I am disabled actually and they haven't been super helpful with accomodations. Seems really hard to make a case out of though. Feels like if i went to HR they would just find some other reason to fire me.
lessthanseventy··on Ask HN: How to deal with an abusive co-worker?
I should also add that i have spoken with the girl that had the position before me and this individual is 100% the reason she left as well. It got so bad that she was openly sobbing at her desk most days from his treatment of her.
lessthanseventy··on Ask HN: What would be the best programming language for a blind person to learn?
Thank you so much. That's sort of what I expected to hear honestly. I've been using Doom Emacs lately in anticipation of transitioning over to Emacspeak. I still have some remaining vision but considering my disease is degenerative I'm thinking towards the future. I can imagine dealing with whitespace is easier than getting lost trying to find a missing bracket or brace or whatever.
lessthanseventy··on Ask HN: What would be the best programming language for a blind person to learn?
I'm also wondering what would be the most likely to lead to a fully remote position that would allow for autonomous / asynchronous work. I'm working in web development right now and long term i would like to get into something that would give me more freedom to set my own schedule.
lessthanseventy··on Study reveals restoration of retinal and visual function following gene therapy
I had this done in 2017 as part of a trial for a gene therapy for X-Linked Juvenile Retinoschisis.

https://clinicaltrials.gov/ct2/show/NCT02317887

I had an adverse reaction to the vector and have had eight surgeries since to save some of the sight in the eye they injected.

lessthanseventy··on Why the Cessna is such a badass plane (2019)
In aircraft engines, turbocharging is commonly used to maintain manifold pressure as altitude increases (i.e. to compensate for lower-density air at higher altitudes). Since atmospheric pressure reduces as the aircraft climbs, power drops as a function of altitude in normally aspirated engines. Systems that use a turbocharger to maintain an engine's sea-level power output are called turbo-normalized systems. Generally, a turbo-normalized system attempts to maintain a manifold pressure of 29.5 inHg
lessthanseventy··on Ask HN: How can I get a remote position?
I'm kinda stuck in a position of not being able to afford it right now. Plus we really like the school district our kid is in.
lessthanseventy··on Ask HN: How can I get a remote position?
I'm absolutely willing to take a lower salary. I'm not expecting to start at the top by any means. I'd be thrilled to make $50,000 a year. I intend to start trying to find some freelance work it's just been hard fitting in around the rest of my life as I also have a seven year old stepson. I'm currently building an e-commerce website for a local store that I'm almost finished with. Any advice on how to go about finding stable remote employment? Technologies I should focus on? Ways to stand out from the crowd?

My biggest issue with the commute right now is that the bus doesn't go as far as my job so I ride to the last stop and walk the rest of the way. It's a temporary position doing taxes. I've got nine years of tax preparation experience and I am looking to get into development as soon as I can before my vision gets much worse. Working in a text editor and terminal is something I can do even if I completely lose it, and I want as much of a jump on it as I can get.

lessthanseventy··on Ask HN: Is anyone here visually disabled?
Thank you I really appreciate it.
lessthanseventy··on Show HN: Song Lyrics Generator
I like the idea of counting syllables and possibly implementing a sort of structure to it with choruses and whatnot also. Would be cool to enforce rhyming too.
