lern_too_spel··on “Math 2.0” will need to value mathematical progress more holistically
Why do that when they can spend more hours extending QRH to a proof of the full Riemann Hypothesis? The opportunity cost of digging up small potatoes is the whole enchilada.
lern_too_spel··on “Math 2.0” will need to value mathematical progress more holistically
It is not obvious to me that a single canonical human language write-up of a proof is the best output in this new world where write-ups are cheap. A human reader can query an LLM and get explanations of key points tailored to the reader's own background in mathematics.

Bar charts should start at zero. If they don't start at zero, there should be a clear visual indicator that the chart has been trimmed without having to read the axis labels. I hate that this has to be repeated so often that it has become a cliché.

I used to think byte level tokenization was the answer, but humans also think at a word level and only reevaluate the words at a character level when asked. The solution to better tokenization across languages is likely to be learned tokenization. Here is one attempt I have seen: https://github.com/SamD770/bitter-lesson-tokenization

Low thinking is an artificial constraint. It can fail spectacularly on things that aren't in the training data.

I know of several von Neumann like stories that people tell about me about things like instant memorization, fast calculation, and instant problem solving. There is almost always a trick that I didn't reveal to the person experiencing the miracle for the same reason a magician doesn't reveal their tricks: it's more fun for the person to figure it out on their own.

> California then thought better of it.

California passed Proposition 3 to strike Proposition 8's changes from its constitution in 2024, by a convincing margin of over 25%. It passed the state legislature with no votes against.

Contrast this with Proposition 8, which exit polls said had the support of 85% of McCain voters and 30% of Obama voters, passing with a margin of less than 5% in 2008.

> California appealed that decision

Proposition 8 proponents appealed that decision after California's AG and governor both said it should be struck down and refused to defend the California constitution for the first time in the state's history, backing the plaintiffs.

> First, I think you're gonna find it's not exactly a sub-single digit opinion today either.

I never claimed otherwise. For that matter, a double digit percentage of people still think that interracial marriage should be forbidden. I'm smart enough to be on the right side of that debate. Eich isn't. Are you?

> Chick-fil A has done their apologies

They never apologized, and they famously kept donating to anti-LGBT political charities after they said they stopped in order to get a restaurant approved in Chicago in 2012.

> What's he got to gain at this point?

Self respect. It's normal to apologize when you've wronged somebody. Not apologizing shows you either think you didn't cause harm or you are too prideful to admit you were wrong.

> All 50 states recognize civil unions or other relationship arrangements.

Sorry, but your attempt to claim "separate but equal" fails to fit reality. The Full Faith and Credit Clause did not afford civil unions the same protections as marriages.

https://www.americanbar.org/groups/crsj/resources/human-righ...

"But suppose that you and your same-sex partner drive from Maryland to Vermont to enter into a civil union because it is the only state that recognizes a significant legal relationship between same-sex couples. If an accident occurs on your drive home and one of you is hospitalized, most states and institutions will not acknowledge your legal relationship with your spouse."

> seismic shift of redefining a centuries old definition of marriage.

Just as before, you are free to get a religious "marriage" that is unrecognized by the state. Just as before, the state can issue a marriage license to people that a particular religion does not approve (e.g., Orthodox rabbis are forbidden from officiating or validating non-Jewish weddings and do not recognize the resulting marriages, and the LDS church taught that interracial marriage, aside from between white men with native American women, was a sin until 2013). The only thing that changes is what marriages the state allows. There was no "seismic shift" outside the small minds of bigots.

How do you propose to get a court order in a state that doesn't recognize (Edit: other states') civil unions? The whole point of marriage protections is that they transfer across states.

> There was always a compromise available but again, sticking it to the religious types was the goal.

Once you understand the difference between a state recognized civil union and a marriage that transfers across states, I'm sure you'll realize that this was instead religious people sticking it to gay people.

> was he lying to appeal to more voters?

He very clearly was. He directed DOJ not to defend DOMA Section 3, and it fell in the courts, just like all the civil rights promoters wanted. If he hadn't been elected, it would have taken longer. That's why we forgive him for lying. We aren't stupid.

He also publicly identified as Christian, though he wrote that his parents and grandparents are nonbelievers.

California then thought better of it. Eich hasn't.

Brendan refused to apologize for the donation or even to acknowledge that it was wrong. Instead, he doubled down on it, saying in comments posted to this very forum that the gays kept asking for more and more rights, and he wasn't OK with that. It wasn't part of the "previous bargain." Like, "I was OK with them sitting anywhere on the bus, but letting them go to the same schools? That wasn't part of the previous bargain." https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=15966490

For Geekbench in particular, expect to gain a few percent in Linux vs. Windows. Of course, you should always look at your workload. The thing that causes me to wait for my computer the most is build times, where the multi-core benchmarks are more interesting than single core benchmarks, and these look like they could make for interesting low power dev boxes when/if proper Linux support lands.

https://www.penguinrandomhouse.com/books/760317/how-to-rule-... is eye opening. When many of us were in college, there was still some idealism about using technology to make the world a better place. Maybe that still exists at some universities, but Sand Hill Road wiped that out of Stanford.
