lepht··on Feedly gets hit by DDoS attack, refuses to give in to blackmail
The development has been glacial bordering on non-existent since launch on digg reader. The betaworks team that created it was able to do so in a matter of weeks– after re-writing and launching the new digg on a similar timeframe – which makes me think the current lack of progress is because they've moved on to other things (Instapaper, for one).

It's too bad, digg reader had a lot of promise.

Symlinks sort of allow for graph-like structures in the filesystem, no?

Some of these "flops" include: the RSS spec that evolved into the currently used one, XML-RPC, SOAP, OPML...

You must have a very high standard for success ;)

Edit: arguably podcasts were first implemented by Winer too

lepht··on Instagram Dropping Foursquare for Facebook Places
I can appreciated GP's optimism, but as someone who has actually utilized both data sets in various forms this is spot on.

Foursquare's data is vastly superior, something I attribute at least partially to the fact that they've built a service that incentivizes checking in, while Facebook is more heavily scrutinized for their questionable privacy practices. It'll be interesting to see if this continues to be the case when 4sq releases Swarm.

Textastic[1] and gitmongo[2] are my indispensable duo when it comes to code editing, searching and git interactions on my iphone/ipad.

lepht··on Lulzlabs AirChat: Free Communications For Everyone.
Although this isn't exactly a case of great eval use – the exceptions are effectively swallowed after printing (at least use warn?), and the $@ isn't being properly localized
lepht··on Firefox 29
I agree on the separation of input fields, but wanted to point out that the search functionality you mention exists in Chrome too (Mac equivalent in parens):

ctrl(cmd)+l to focus omnibar, alt(shift)+enter to open results in a new tab

lepht··on The latest chapter for the self-driving car: mastering city street driving
I'm also in the Boston area (Somerville) and have been wondering about the proper way to respond to right turns with a cyclist in the bike lane behind me.

When I have right-of-way and use my turn signal ahead of time, shouldn't I have the ability to turn right without waiting for the bike to pass (similar to how the cars behind me must wait for me to make my turn before continuing?)

lepht··on The latest chapter for the self-driving car: mastering city street driving
Burlington, VT (last I knew, anyway) has a similar law -- stop signs are effectively yield signs, while red lights are stop signs, as far as cyclists are concerned.

While their APIs are nice, they require separate permissions and having access to them isn't always a given depending on the company that runs/owns the Jira instance.

You could always have a fixed length randomly generated number prefix, with the numbers after that being sequential, making it obvious internally the sequence while obfuscating to the customer.

For example if you did a four digit prefix your first three hotfixes might be:

lepht··on Neovim
I've been frustrated by the lack of iterm2 features in Linux terminal emulators: local autocomplete, tmux integration, etc
lepht··on Neovim
That seems like a bit of a straw man: the official OS X native version of vim, MacVim has literally all of those key map pings by default – cmd+c to copy, cmd+a to select all, etc.

lepht··on Get Facebook WiFi for your business
How about data provided to the business on who their customers are? This seems especially genius in that it doesn't even require the extra step of "checking-in", but can provide the business with the same data.

This is not the same creature, though -- The Wii U gamepad has an infrared transmitter that allows it to act as a universal remote.

The current AppleTV has bluetooth -- you can use it for pairing of a keyboard. The issue is that AirPlay doesn't support bluetooth as a transmission method in its current implementation.

The question is not the age of the people fighting wars, but what a government chooses to "use" its youth population for.
lepht··on Mozilla, EFF, Reddit And 83 Other Organizations Launch StopWatching.Us
Interesting sentiment, and I can't help but think this is why the government seems to fear the youth the most/ships them off to wars in other countries.
lepht··on iOS 7 looks familiar
I've been running iOS 7 for a day now and had some co-workers give it a try -- all of them current iPhone users -- and literally every single one of them tried to swipe up to unlock.

Unfortunately, in my experience so far, this isn't the only case of misleading and unintuitive design in iOS 7.
