leothecool··on Jury finds former CIA programmer guilty of leaking CIA hacking materials
That doesn't matter. Drug dealers, hitmen, prostitutes, etc. go to jail all the time even though its their job.
leothecool··on Energy crunch concerns lead Japan’s government to call for reduced AC use
Sure, why not. If he's identified a niche in the market, he should exploit it. Personally, I'd expect that energy executives and policy makers already considered this and rejected it, but who knows, maybe he found a niche they didn't consider.
leothecool··on Energy crunch concerns lead Japan’s government to call for reduced AC use
If you think there's another viable solution, please found a company around the idea and prove us all wrong.
leothecool··on PhD students face cash crisis with wages that don’t cover living costs
Coach salaries -would- look like a bargain if revenue correlated with win-loss rate or quite frankly any measurable activity the coaches do. But, they don't.

IMO the guy in big-10 football who deserves a multi million dollar salary is the guy in the mascot fursuit.

leothecool··on Would You Take Out a Loan for a Pair of Jeans? (2017)
Another thing to consider is that no payment method is free for the merchant. Even with cash, you need to pay Loomis, or you need to pay an employee to physically visit a bank.
leothecool··on Twitter Terms of Service Diff
IANAL but I think you are probably subject to both versions of the TOS. You granted them a license to the content you posted under the old TOS, and those terms are still valid. Future content grants them a license under the new terms.
leothecool··on The bottom is dropping out of Netflix
US growth is saturated. They raised the price 10%. They lost less than 1% of subscribers. What's the problem?
leothecool··on The bottom is dropping out of Netflix
> combined cable & internet is cheaper than only interne

Be careful. Its not cheaper after they include local programming fees.

leothecool··on Ask HN: Would a universal basic income lead to inflation?
But its not the position of zero, its the derivative.

The car analogy would be something like

"If you raise the speed limit by 1 mph, you've just moved everyone's houses exactly one mile."

leothecool··on The campaign to shut down YouTube-dl continues
As a garbage bag manufacturer, can you advertise that your garbage bags are for that purpose?
leothecool··on Bye YouTube, Hello PeerTube [video]
So... if I watch a copywritten video on peertube, the MPAA might sue me for being a peer and distributing it?
leothecool··on Bye-bye, Bitcoin: It's time to ban cryptocurrencies
Ban credit card reward air miles while we are at it, right?
leothecool··on Sports Owners Use Their Teams to Avoid Millions in Taxes
Its capitalist if the government handouts are only available to people with a considerable amount of capital, which is the case in the article.

Is it a failure though? I'm amazed I need to say this on HN, but that depends on the KPIs you choose to use to evaluate the capitalist aspect of this particular tax policy. If the goal is that the rich get richer, its a capitalism success. If the goal is that everyone in society gets more leisure time and increased quality of life, it looks like a failure to me.

leothecool··on Two Portland delivery companies revolt against Amazon, shut down
Not really, because I also think Amazon is illegally classifying these employees as contractors.

I don't tell the contractor working on my house what tools to use, and the contractor working on my house has other customers besides me.

leothecool··on Apple, FedEx and the cookie apocalypse
> A version of this essay was sent to premium subscribers to my newsletter earlier this week. Find out more here.

The solution is right there on the page, just not in the article itself.

leothecool··on Trust: The Need for Public Understanding of How Science Works
I think you are missing the point.

Pop culture thinks science means space, chemicals, and electronics. We aren't even hearing the words of authority in this case. A scientist describing what science is doesn't sound like indoctrination or blind faith to me.

leothecool··on Epic Games steps up Apple fight with EU antitrust complaint
Right. At launch, leveraging ipod marketshare was key. After those same users got locked in to the app-store, the music library lock in became less important. So they started out by letting you pay extra money to break out of their walled garden. I'm pretty sure purchases made in the ipod era are still drm encumbered today.
leothecool··on Epic Games steps up Apple fight with EU antitrust complaint
Not true. MCI predates the break-up of ma bell.
leothecool··on Epic Games steps up Apple fight with EU antitrust complaint
Its not exactly a good thing that they leveraged itunes library vendor lock-in to drive market share early on. The anti-consumer aspects of their closed ecosystem directly resulted in their success. There's no doubt about it.
leothecool··on Facebook sued for ‘losing control’ of users’ data
There is an exception for data that is required for the functioning of the service. You need your friends email address to use email, but do you really need their birthday or a sentiment analysis of their opinion of cheesecakes?
leothecool··on Facebook sued for ‘losing control’ of users’ data
Facebook processed data without the consent of the subject of the data, right? (The friends of the user who agreed)
leothecool··on Statement of SEC Regarding Recent Market Volatility
Do you have any metrics to back this up?

Or is this your own fantasy you've built up...

leothecool··on The embedded YouTube player told me what you were watching
The trailing dot is fine.

http://www.dns-sd.org/trailingdotsindomainnames.html

Though now I'm curious why it fails for you.

leothecool··on EU Commission: ‘No longer acceptable’ for platforms to take key decisions alone
> they were actively moderating the platform to push it on the far right side

Do you have a source for this? I tried googling it for ~5 minutes, but my google-fu is too weak.

leothecool··on "Equal pay for equal work" in remote jobs
To me this looks like the practices that led to the High-Tech Employee Antitrust Litigation of 2013 are still going on. The market is still broken. Companies that have this policy are only free to pay "cost of living" based salaries because the companies that are offering remote work aren't competing with each other. Like you said, they are only competing with the local startups in the cities where remote workers live.
leothecool··on I Violated a Code of Conduct
Denying its a kafka trap only proves that it is.
leothecool··on Facebook has sent a cease-and-desist letter to researchers
Too bad he didn't cite where in the source code it does any of this stuff.
leothecool··on How journalists use youtube-dl
Wow, by that logic news reporters aren't even allowed watch videos on the site for news reporting purposes because it would violate the ban on commercial use.
leothecool··on YouTube bans coronavirus vaccine misinformation
> What is the end-game that is so feared?

Personally, I am afraid of very large media companies making AIs that have utility functions intended to change the behavior of humans without their consent.

leothecool··on Chrome is deploying HTTP/3 and IETF QUIC
I guess I'd have to see the metrics on it in production, but my intuition is that a 2% improvement to latency would be even less noticeable on low bandwidth connections where the download times are measured in whole seconds.
