leongrado··on China is increasingly using exit bans to bar Americans from leaving
This. If you're some some random scrub going to China, the government isn't going to bat an eye if you enter the country. Thousands of American citizens go to and from China every day. Detaining you for no reason is not what they're looking for.
leongrado··on Colombia fines Uber more than $629k for obstructing regulatory visit
About the salary of one Uber dev.
leongrado··on Kenyans Say Chinese Investment Brings Racism and Discrimination (2018)
For the most part, Chinese in China don't have a culture of condemning racism like the US or other western nations. As apparent in the video, he isn't even ashamed of being called racist.
leongrado··on A national housing crisis is brewing
Agreed. I recently moved from the Midwest to Boston and the housing and rent prices are giving me major sticker shock. My rent has tripled and looking at the housing prices, looks like they have too. Who's buying these 1 million dollar homes?
leongrado··on Fitbit employees charged with stealing trade secrets from competitor Jawbone
I think the story probably went something like this:

1. Fitbit steal hires Jawbone employees. 2. Jawbone retaliates by charging everyone who left Jawbone to join Fitbit for stealing trade secrets.

leongrado··on France to ban mobile phones in primary, junior and middle schools
Completely agree.

The kids who wanted to do well always learned the material no matter how boring the material was taught and the kids who didn't want to learn didn't learn a thing even with the most engaging teacher. Teachers can only do so much.

leongrado··on China’s AI Awakening
China is "great" in some aspects and not great in others. The one party system allows the government to make decisive decisions and act with the backing of tax dollars. Look at the high speed rail system. It pretty much went from non existent to one of the world's best rail systems in a matter of years. It's the same with this AI initiative.

Why are rich parents sending their kids to the US? There's a shortage of jobs for college graduates in China and many parents are hoping that a degree from a western college will give them a better chance at finding a job either in the US or China.

As for buying property. The biggest reason is probably diversification and the fact that the Chinese see property as a good investment. Housing prices in China have sky rocketed and many Chinese families have more than one house that they just leave around with no one living in them. Just like how stock investors invest in foreign stocks, Chinese landowners are diversifying their property.

Foreign investors don't want to buy property in China probably because of the pollution problem and the fact that they think that the housing market there is a huge bubble.

leongrado··on Selection bias is the most powerful force in education
I'm from the midwest and most people who weren't aiming for Ivy Leagues just took the ACT.
leongrado··on Show HN: Is the stock market going to crash?
Completely agree. Yeah luckydude I can say with 100% certainty that if you took all of your money out right at this moment, you won't lose any money in the next crash. Give me the nobel prize in economics guys.
