leodriesch··on Tell HN: WhatsApp Is Down
Down in Germany as well.
leodriesch··on Linux M1 GPU driver passes 99% of the dEQP-GLES2 compliance tests
Thunderbolt drivers are still WIP for Asahi so I’d assume eGPU support is still in the future.
leodriesch··on Obsidian 1.0 – Personal knowledge base app
Could you expand on how you do encryption with gocryptfs?
leodriesch··on Why JWTs Suck as Session Tokens (2017)
A person has accessed your account and you’ve noticed it via sign-in-email. You change your password.

Attacker now still has 1-10 minutes to access your account.

leodriesch··on Fly.io makes infrastructure easy for developers
My understanding of the 0.x CPU measurement is that you're sharing a single CPU core with other running applications.
leodriesch··on So You Want to Compete with Steam (2018)
My experience on Stadia was that when playing controller the latency is barely noticeable, but keyboard and mouse was really uncomfortable to me.
leodriesch··on So You Want to Compete with Steam (2018)
That is already possible with Stadia (and possibly other game streaming services).
leodriesch··on Adobe to acquire Figma for $20B
Adobe has XD, which is a direct competitor to Figma as a vector based design tool that includes prototyping functionality.
leodriesch··on The EU Commission accepts high error rates when checking chats
> It specifically prohibits discrimination and welcomes people from other nations, both of which the average German does not actually like

That’s an absolutely wild claim and I’d like to know where you got this impression from.

leodriesch··on Tauri vs. Electron – Real world application
You could spawn any local server from Node and talk to it from the web side.
leodriesch··on Audible feedback on just how much your browsing feeds into Google
I’d say captchas are reliant on not being open about their detection methods, otherwise they would be easier to game.

AFAIK the image selection is only part of determining you’re a human, the other part is tracking your mouse movement and so to see if you’re real.

leodriesch··on React PDF Viewer
It seems to me that they are using Rollup to bundle the PDF.js source code into their own.

I’d guess it makes sense for PDF.js since you likely won’t need it outside of this library in your own project and it comes with multiple builds, of which they might choose one specific.

Then install speeds are faster and node_modules are smaller.

leodriesch··on See what JavaScript commands get injected through an in-app browser
Lockdown mode is a security measure and not a privacy one.

It disables JavaScript JIT compilation, which makes it slower but more secure.

It should not disable any JavaScript execution itself.

leodriesch··on Will Bun JavaScript Take Node's Crown
A lockfile is a way to lock your indirect dependencies. If you only install based on the lockfile every dependency is pinned.
leodriesch··on My take on how DuckDuckGo can outperform Google
I’d like to try out Kagi but having every search I do tied to my real world identity (via payment information) with no ability to search privately really kills it for me.
leodriesch··on Let websites framebust out of native apps
This works very well, I use the Instagram PWA instead of the app. It is feature-complete content-wise, so you can view everything you can in the app.

But it is not feature-complete in the other ways, so it has no advertisements (at least for me) or the new algorithmic feed. Just the old version of the Instagram home feed that is chronological.

Highly recommend it if you can live with the decrease in "smoothness" compared to the app.

leodriesch··on The CSS Behind Figma
Google Docs also does that [0].

leodriesch··on Vite – Next Generation Front End Tooling
To be fair web content can also be ported easily pretty much everywhere because browsers run almost everywhere.
leodriesch··on Vite – Next Generation Front End Tooling
In my experience dealing with the tooling is fine for ongoing projects by just checking for updates every week.

But it is very stressful to update from Webpack 2 to 5 for example. So taking an old project from a couple of years ago and updating the dependencies is not that easy, especially if you were using a lot of the build tools features.

leodriesch··on Raindrop: All-in-One Bookmark Manager
I am using Raindrop and it syncs seamlessly between all my devices despite not ever paying for it.
leodriesch··on Deno raises $21M
This strives to standardize the runtimes and standard library surface but not the runtime orchestration, networking or other aspects.
leodriesch··on Facebook says Apple is too powerful – they're right
That’s the thing with iOS, I feel like it is really built around the user and what the user wants. Less so around what companies want.

Users love the product so it grew it’s enormous userbase to what it is today. Companies have to comply to the restrictions that Apple imposes on them, because they can’t miss out on the userbase as their customer.

As a user I can’t really think of any guidelines that I’d want to be changed or doors to be opened, I feel like it’s mostly non-users or companies requesting them.

leodriesch··on Solend seized $170M of user funds
Solana boasts about being scalable and capable of processing more than 1000 transactions per second, how is it that this is threatening the performance of the network?
leodriesch··on Things you're allowed to do (2020)
Worked for me once when buying an iPhone at a local electronics store using the price on Amazon as leverage.
leodriesch··on Show HN: Umbrel – A personal server OS for self-hosting
It’s not gnome or any desktop environment for that matter, it’s a custom made web application.
leodriesch··on Show HN: Umbrel – A personal server OS for self-hosting
What does the backup experience look like? I feel like that is a major difficulty for people looking to self host, at least for me.

I would not want to lose my pictures, contacts or NextCloud files due to some update failure, hardware failure or my own mistake in managing the system.

leodriesch··on Show HN: Umbrel – A personal server OS for self-hosting
Just out of interest, could you list some?
leodriesch··on Show HN: Umbrel – A personal server OS for self-hosting
There is a License FAQ [0], in which it says:

> Selling Umbrel, including selling cloud-hosted instances with Umbrel or its derivates, home server hardware with Umbrel or its derivates, support services for Umbrel or its derivates, etc is not permitted under our license.

leodriesch··on Show HN: Umbrel – A personal server OS for self-hosting
I think just renting a machine and installing your own software/OS is also beneficial to using cloud services from a privacy perspective, e.g. running your own NextCloud on Hetzner or the likes.
leodriesch··on New Upcoming Telegram Premium Features
Could you explain why you think that would be the case?
