lemonlime0x3C33··on Caffeine suppresses cerebral grey matter responses to chronic sleep restriction
An interesting article to read, would love to see a larger samples size at some point. I am also going to continue drinking my mid-day espresso, morning coffee, and afternoon pick me up caffeine drink...
lemonlime0x3C33··on Reverse-Engineering an IP Camera (2019)
This was great, I loved all the parts it was super thorough :) You have to love serial ports on embedded devices, especially non password protected root access
lemonlime0x3C33··on Hacking Amazon's Eero 6 (part 2)
Thank you :)
lemonlime0x3C33··on Hacking Amazon's Eero 6 (part 2)
You did an amazing job, soldering wire to BGA pads must have been fun :)

What was the probe tool you were trying to use?

lemonlime0x3C33··on Adding a USB port to the ThinkPad X1 Nano (the hard way)
This was a joy to read, your easyEDA design looked great too! I didn't know they had 3D capabilities.
lemonlime0x3C33··on Debugging hardware is hard
I enjoyed reading through your debugging process and as someone who has been trying to debug a custom board for a few weeks now I feel your pain. I still cannot say that my issue is hardware, firmware, or software -_-

I do have some UART devices that really seem to like when I just disconnect and reconnect the GND wire when they start to act up.

lemonlime0x3C33··on WA man set up fake free WiFi at airports and on flights, police allege
Your phone will do this automatically and will not show you you have been connected to a hotspot on the main screen, it will still show you as connected to cellular, this is most likely a carrier hotspot.
lemonlime0x3C33··on A modern 8 bit design, built using 1950s thermionic valves
I was really hoping to see a picture of it in dim light with the valves glowing. Also I was not expecting to see such an adorable light house for ducks in the post. All around a great read :)
lemonlime0x3C33··on Nano DIP: the smallest complete Arduino board 33 x 10mm
I have stopped using MicroUSB in my designs because without fail at some point I rip the thing off the board -_-

normally only occurs while aggressively debugging

lemonlime0x3C33··on Testing Generative AI for Circuit Board Design
thank you for summarizing the results, I feel much better about my job security. Now if AI could make a competent auto router for fine pitch BGA components that would be really nice :)
lemonlime0x3C33··on The Raspberry Pi 5 Is No Match for a Tini-Mini-Micro PC
I will always love raspberry pi's, they are well supported and great for quick and cheap prototyping. I have used them to teach children how to code (They really enjoyed working with sensehat), research at university, and at work for rapidly prototyping. The size is also easy to work with.

There are better SBC's out there, but raspberry pi is familiar.

I really hope the recent IPO doesn't change too much...

lemonlime0x3C33··on Simple sabotage for software (2023)
This was a depressingly accurate view of my limited experiences at large companies :(
lemonlime0x3C33··on Making my first embedded Linux system
I think your PCB schematic looks great, especially for your first design! It is quite readable :)

I also started with easyEDA for my first few PCB's, it is very intuitive.

lemonlime0x3C33··on Dan's the man: Why Chinese women are looking to ChatGPT for love
Addressing needs to make ones life a little better is great, I only worry that it may lead to people not pursuing more organic/rewarding options in the future.
lemonlime0x3C33··on Microsoft to delay release of Recall AI feature on security concerns
I have been dual booting for years but this has been my motivation to officially abandon windows at home, just need to figure out how to play civ 7 when it comes out next year...
lemonlime0x3C33··on I built an ROV to solve missing person cases
that is fair, I did a lot of robotics research in University so I may be a bit biased :p
lemonlime0x3C33··on I built an ROV to solve missing person cases
I hope you can take a break, burn out is real and it is important to take care of yourself! It is never too late to work on something you care about :)
lemonlime0x3C33··on I built an ROV to solve missing person cases
This was incredibly well written and the project itself was super cool to see come together. I worked on building UAV's in University but seeing the unique challenges with dealing with water from a signals perspective was really intriguing.

Good luck with any future cases and can't wait to see what upgrades you make!

lemonlime0x3C33··on Making USB devices – end to end guide to your first gadget
I was able to reset downstream USB devices using usbreset to the individual ports (or the entire hub) in my design, using usbreset. I did also have a hardware reset built in using the cfg_sel0 and cfg_sel1 pins 24 & 25 and RESET_N. I did not try to turn off power to those ports for any extended time so I am not sure if that works.
lemonlime0x3C33··on Making USB devices – end to end guide to your first gadget
I have had a good experience using microchips USB2514 and USB2512
lemonlime0x3C33··on Making USB devices – end to end guide to your first gadget
I think it is nice to have a basic understanding of differential pairs and impedance, I will admit I never really had to do the calculations since the ecad software I use has several tools for routing differential pairs and even analyzing signals for impedance. But as long as you keep your traces really short it normally doesn't matter.
lemonlime0x3C33··on Making USB devices – end to end guide to your first gadget
This is a very well written and informative article for working with USB, wish I had it when I first started USB signals.
lemonlime0x3C33··on SPI Flash
I love Pomona SOIC test clips, the other cheaper ones off of amazon are garbage though. :) I find when flashing hardware you might have to try a few times and if you get a good read/write going don't move, don't breathe, don't do anything until it is done.
lemonlime0x3C33··on Discord has been using ML to determine the gender and age of some of its users
as long as they are accurate I do not mind. I was annoyed that as women who is also an engineer google's ad profile always insisted I was a single man. Despite my many skincare/make up/ and women's clothing/shoe purchases. I guess they weighted reference schematics and data sheet searches more heavily than other things. If you are going to show me targeted ads please make them ads I want to see.
lemonlime0x3C33··on 2.4M person study: Internet use boosts, not hurts, well being
The internet is a wonderful thing, having access to learn new skills, research any topic and connect to people is great. Social media is awful, growing up with it definitely impacted my self image and even as an adult I am not immune to it.

I do think it does more good than harm though especially with people who may otherwise not have many organic opportunities at social interactions.

lemonlime0x3C33··on Static Chess
This is great to play asynchronously with people quickly and simply :) Great job!
lemonlime0x3C33··on Ask HN: Affordable hardware for running local large language models?
I have used a raspberry pi for running image classification CNN’s, it really depends on the model you are using. Edge IoT AI is making a lot of progress targeting running AI on resource constrained devices.

If you have access to the dataset you want you could train one yourself to fit on your target hardware. You could also look at FPGA solutions if you are comfortable working with those. Training locally might take some time but you could use google Codelab to train it.
