lemiant··on The Starship or the Canoe: Where will our future adaptations be? (2017)
This is analogous to arguing against exploring the Americas because Europe had poverty.

It seems to me that over a couple hundred year time horizon the new land, resources, technologies and economies of scale added by the new world were clearly a net benefit to europeans as a whole and paid back the initial investment many times over.

lemiant··on I'm Peter Roberts, immigration attorney who does work for YC and startups. AMA
Worked with peter for 8 years from 3 founders to 300 employees. They are great
lemiant··on My grandmother died at home, just as she wanted. It cost $145,000
I feel like if you look at the amount of equipment and staff here it obviously costs a huge amount to deliver this care. Regardless of who pays the $100k+ cost remains.
lemiant··on H1B rejected – builds unicorn back home
This shows a shocking level of ignorance about the US immigration system.

Just straight off the bat you need to be a resident for 5 years before you can even apply for citizenship ( https://www.uscis.gov/forms/explore-my-options/become-a-us-c... ).

The full process is the better part of a decade in the best case (e.g. expensive lawyers, STEM degree, immigrating from an easy country like Canada). If you're from a country like China or India where lots of other people are also applying for those slots - or if anything else is less than optimal - you're looking at between a decade+ and never.

lemiant··on Loving Someone with Depression
This is not constructive advice. It is a heck of a lot more complicated than this is making it out to be. You wouldn't leave your loved one with a broken leg until the "found their own way" to the doctor.
lemiant··on Moths draped in stealth acoustic cloak evade bat sonar
I love that you wrote this. I wrote a very similar whitepaper about meta-evolution (evolving methods to propose better mutations) a few months ago: https://lemiant.github.io/PhilosophyCircle/papers/evolution_...
lemiant··on Talent is everywhere, opportunity is not
This is basically the pitch for YC
lemiant··on My Product Is Unexpectedly Being Used to Help People with Dementia
@aacook this is awesome! I just showed it to my sister and we're going to sign up for my Grandma's birthday next month. One request: Snapchat is our native photo sharing app (and I assume that's true for many other millennials) any chance there's a way to send from snapchat in the works?
lemiant··on Autodesk to Acquire PlanGrid (YC W12) to Accelerate Construction Productivity
If I remember right, this is also the second largest YC acquisition of any kind :)
lemiant··on Introducing YC Series A Batches
Because the Series A program is free (no equity) and YC, although very founder friendly, isn’t a charity.
lemiant··on Comma.ai launches an $88 universal car interface called Panda
Hi John, I'm Alex Rodrigues, CEO at Embark. Thanks for your interest. Our testing is legal and we are in close communication with the DMV to ensure we stay that way. In California we restrict our system to Level 2 (like Tesla autopilot), in order to comply with regulations.
lemiant··on Embark launches as a competitor to Ubers Otto in the self driving truck space
I'm one of the founders at Embark. We're super excited to show what we've been working on to the world! Happy to answer any questions.

And also... we're hiring! If you want to work on a small team with a strong vision that's tackling one of the most important problems of our generation, you should get in touch.

lemiant··on How Norway spends its $882B global fund
In general I've always agreed with this view. But I can't help but wonder how studies like this explain Berkshire Berkshire Hathaway.
lemiant··on Don't like Brexit? We have a plan
This is really cool and well done. I'm unhappy with the stats they chose though.

I thought that 20x less robberies seemed unlikely so I clicked their source. They were using the absolute number of robberies not per capita. The way they used it is sneakiness bordering on outright lies. This kind of bad-faith abuse of stats always irritates me.

lemiant··on The driverless truck is coming, and it’s going to automate millions of jobs
There are a few:

- Dispatch [1]

- Starships [2]

- And at least one stealth mode company

lemiant··on Perl 6 Is Slower Than My Fat Momma
Those concurrency features are amazing! Are there any other languages like that?
lemiant··on Hard Tech is Back
My mechanical co-founder swears by Hackaday. It's somewhat different, but a great place to see mechanical projects.
lemiant··on Ahmed Mohamed: 'Clock boy' seeks $15m from city and school
This makes no sense. The standard award for one death is $8m. In no world is what he went through equal two people losing their lives.
lemiant··on Short Story on AI: A Cognitive Discontinuity
Is there some way I can subscribe so I don't miss the next instalment?
lemiant··on Muslim man gets 23 years for making a YouTube video (2011)
When I first heard about this in passing I had to investigate further because I just couldn't believe someone could go to jail for making a youtube video expressing a view. Especially not for decades with no warning. I was under the (clearly naive) impression that the 1st amendment was a right that belongs to all Americans. Can anyone explain how this can be legally justified?
lemiant··on Short Story on AI: A Cognitive Discontinuity
This is awesome, I'm a big fan. I love it because (excepting the spontaneous creation of General AI) the treatment of future AI seems so plausible. Few people consider how we will handle this stage of AI development, but undoubtedly there will be lots of cool stuff like that between here and self-improving super intelligent computers.

Will there be a sequel?

lemiant··on If Uber works, you might be less happy with your transport options
This is a badly reasoned article. If the total stock of vehicles is decreasing it creates a lot of savings (as the article admits). How are these savings captured? In cheaper Ubers. The total cost of all the cars on the road is already being paid for out of our transportation costs. As each vehicle gets shared between more people the cost to each person goes down. Obviously there will be an equilibrium between lower prices from fewer vehicles and higher convenience from having extra capacity. But, using resources more efficiently won't cause harm. Even if the total vehicle stock were to decrease as much as the article suggests the price of an uber would drop much faster than the convenience.

Now this all assumes an efficient market. If Uber were to start abusing its monopoly powers, that would be something to be legitimately concerned about...

lemiant··on Apple tells U.S. judge 'impossible' to unlock new iPhones
Can someone explain how Apple has managed to render brute force ineffective if there are only 10000 possible 4-digit passcodes?
lemiant··on Your company is not “too far along” for YC
I feel like that quote is a relevant content considering the post is about how YC was good for their startup... and they're listing ways in which YC was good for their startup.
lemiant··on Medium Raises $57M
What are they gonna do with all that money?

...change the company name to Large?

lemiant··on When Daydreaming Replaces Real Life
I definitely met all of these symptoms as a kid, down to the hours of elaborate stories and the repetitive motions. I've since outgrown it, I got too busy to return to my fantasy chracters. But I'll always miss them a bit.
lemiant··on Gogo Inflight Internet is Intentionally Issuing Fake SSL Certificates
This is very different though, because it would throw an error.
