legohead··on Your Immune System Is Not a Muscle
You ever get that itch in the roof of your mouth, and you use your tongue to kind of scrape/scratch the roof of your mouth? After I started paying attention to food allergies from this Yellow 6 thing, I noticed I would get this mouth-itch from certain fruits and nuts. Watermelon, almonds, and oranges. Super minor in the grand scheme of things, but never knew this itch was due to an allergy -- just thought it happened randomly. That is one thing that has yet to go away, but I can live with it at least.
legohead··on Your Immune System Is Not a Muscle
I wasn't ingesting it any more than a regular person -- but I was surprised to find out how many foods use Yellow 6. It's more orange than yellow. It's also banned in several countries. It used to be in Kraft Mac and Cheese but they replaced their artificial colors with natural ones, which is nice.

One thing I wondered while being allergic to it, was how much could I take before triggering the reaction. It ended up being extremely little. A single dorito chip would set it off. After that, I just cut it out of my diet completely.

Another weird thing is the reaction would last about 45 minutes exactly every time. I'd be sitting on the toilet bent over in agony, watching the clock.

I became allergic to Yellow 6 randomly. I would get extreme abdominal pain, even went to the ER a couple times and got a CT scan once due to the severity of the pain. I broke out in hives, tongue would swell, etc. I eventually figured it out after having a reaction to Cheese Doritos but not Cool Ranch (the only ingredient difference was Yellow 6). I tested it on some other foods with Yellow 6 and confirmed it.

So I stayed away from it for a couple years, then decided to cautiously try some Doritos again, and no reaction. Today, I'm not allergic to yellow 6 at all.

legohead··on iPhone 16 could let you shoot in JPEG-XL
I thought most cameras shot RAW and then chose a format to save to (some letting you save RAW itself, at least with Android).
legohead··on Microsoft stock drops over 6% after results fall short in AI disappointment
AI has been a huge help in my daily life both work and home. I use it do debug, diagnose, search for information, write code, answer numerous questions I get from my kids, etc.

"AI can be wrong" - like that hasn't been a problem with humans since forever... Like with any information, you have to be diligent. I teach my kids this also.

legohead··on CrowdStrike Update: Windows Bluescreen and Boot Loops
The core issue? I'd say it's QA.

Deploy to a QA server fleet first. Stuff is broken. 100% prevention.

legohead··on Gut microbiota markers for autism spectrum disorder
My wife is an educational therapist. Helps kids with autism/add/dyslexia/other. She told me it's a thing now to get autistic kids off gluten, sugar, and milk. She said it helps to reduce/isolate triggers, and as a behaviour resurfaces you can start addressing them one by one.
legohead··on Ask HN: Who Wants a Penpal?
met my wife from another country on a free penpal website some 25 years ago. wasn't a dating site, just sign up with your email, write a short introduction, and wait for someone to write you.
legohead··on Tetris Font (2020)
Feels like there should be many ways to make a particular letter, and it'd be neat if it was random each time. I tried "Hello" and noticed the L's are the same. Considering it's just for fun I think it'd add a little more fun if it was actually unique letters.

Also, can we get a checkbox for "pause after animation"? I want to take a minute to check out the letters before it starts animating again. I know you can click off Animate after it finishes, but if I share this, others may not be so keen.

legohead··on Safe Superintelligence Inc.
There's no superintelligence without non-turing based (logic gates) hardware. Is SSI going to be developing quantum computers?
legohead··on Show HN: Probabilistic Tic-Tac-Toe
Neat idea! The computer keeps beating me with its basic strategy.

I also managed to get the die stuck on a side with an edge pointing up, to where the game couldn't choose a face. I thought it was going to brick the game, but it detected this and re-rolled the die. Nice!

legohead··on I got tired of hearing that YC fired Sam, so here's what actually happened
So if I go to my boss and say I have another job X, they say choose, and I say no thanks I'll keep both. What's going to happen? They essentially fired him, but with different paperwork. Paul is being pedantic.
legohead··on I got tired of hearing that YC fired Sam, so here's what actually happened
Fired means forced to quit employment. It's not illegal to have two jobs, they made him choose, thus firing him. I don't know why Paul is so defensive about this.
legohead··on Daylight Computer – New 60fps e-paper tablet
For me the main benefit of EInk, besides the daylight viewing, is battery life. How does your epaper compare to EInk or an iPad? I realize it wont be as efficient, running at 60fps, but I'm curious if it's that much better than a regular tablet display.
legohead··on Tesla's Sales in Europe Fall to a 15-Month Low
There's an efficiency rating for EVs, basically best bang for buck per kWh. Tesla has ranked in the top consistently, thus saving you some more money on electric bill.

I think it's more lame to disregard this ideology. What if Germany had the nuke first? "oh well, at least we held to our morals"

There's this ideal human sociology, and then there's the reality of what we really are. It takes a unique person to accept it, and do the wrong thing for the right reason, and also be able to steer things in the eventual right direction.

legohead··on Deaf girl is cured in world first gene therapy trial
Designer babies are fine with me. If I could make a handsome, strong as an ape, genius, healthy baby, I'd do it! I'd do the same for me.

If there's a moral sticking point, for me it would be about the cost and privilege it assumes. We still have a very long ways to go before that is figured out...but if we have genius level babies, maybe they can do it for us.

legohead··on Applying the Facade Pattern on Spotify for Artists
I assume it's related to revenue somehow. They could hide true shuffle somewhere deep in settings, not on by default, whatever..

I spend a good portion of my time changing playlists and restarting playlists just to get around their fake shuffle, and I still end up hearing repeated songs. It's extremely frustrating. I even tried out Amazon music, ready to make the switch, but my family members don't want to move with me, so I'm just dealing with Spotify for now. May end up paying for my own Amazon/Other music service as well.

legohead··on Applying the Facade Pattern on Spotify for Artists
Spotify please listen to your customers and spend a minute or two implementing true shuffle [1], thank you.

legohead··on I Know the secret to the quiet mind. I wish I'd never learned it (2021)
I was diagnosed with cluster migraines, but I'm not convinced at that diagnosis, it didn't seem that severe. I used to get a migraine or two a month, and in allergy season it was even worse. My migraine were pure pain, I would literally think I was going to die, but I also knew I had been through it enough times that I would be okay. I'd also get full on allergy attacks (relevant in a minute), constant nose running - I'd stuff my nose with toilet paper and sit miserably, unable to focus or think clearly.

Then I moved to another state, and haven't had an allergy attack since, and my migraines have mostly gone away. I get probably one real migraine a year, with smaller headaches maybe once a month. Nothing debilitating like before though. For me I think it was all allergy related, but specific allergies. The state I moved to is rated as having the same allergy levels, but yet I don't have these attacks or as many migraines anymore.

legohead··on Reddit is taking over Google
I use RES and haven't had any problems opening images or videos... actually, I've noticed they load really slowly, often times I can watch the image loading like it was 56k days. I wonder if that's because I'm using old reddit+RES.

legohead··on Via ferratas are finally catching on in the United States
As a rock climber, I hope it grows. Tired of seeing these debates and fights with authorities on putting up anchors, which are far less visible than these via ferratas. If these catch on and people like them, I think it will be good for climbers.
