leftnode··on Twitter Closing $800M Funding Round at $8 Billion Valuation
33% of Facebook traffic comes from mobile devices - http://www.facebook.com/press/info.php?statistics

Facebook has a tremendous mobile foothold.

leftnode··on Ask HN: What are some great examples of a Minimum Viable Product?
Please hire a professional designer to redesign your website as soon as possible and ditch this ThemeForest theme. I see it everywhere now and it looks forced.

For the record, I used the exact same theme when I launched my product, but quickly ditched it.

leftnode··on Why we gave up web design after 10 successful years to move to products
With some of my clients, I negotiate dual-ownership of the end software in exchange for a lower price. That way, if it is something that looks like it could be monetized as a product, I have the ability to do that.
leftnode··on You should probably quit your job
Yup, I read Guy Kawasaki's "Art of the Start" where he says you should make a startup and change the world. It's incredibly frightening to think that, and I wouldn't recommend it for anyone.

Very few people change the world in the sense the author means (Mark Zuckerberg, Larry/Sergey, loads of scientists, etc).

But if you can set out to change someones world, I think you'll find your work more interesting and rewarding.

leftnode··on Creating a Small Website to Earn Passive Income: Second Attempt
Yup, that exact thing happened with my product. I told myself "I'm just going to create a small marketing site, sell it and see what happens."

I launched it, got a few sales, and then started to think "well, if I add this feature to the site, maybe I can increase sales, or I need these blog posts, or I need to A/B test this button, etc..." and before you know it, it's not passive.

leftnode··on Alternatives to GoDaddy
Right, it's the PayPal Law. You'll use PayPal fine for 8 years, and then one day they'll totally fuck you over in ways that you can't imagine. Same with GoDaddy. You'll use them fine forever, and then they'll totally fuck you over.

This is from a GoDaddy customer of at least 4 years, and I've never been fucked over by them, but I've seen it happen a lot.

leftnode··on Erlang creator on how to get started and learning to program
One key point he mentions is actually typing in the examples while you're reading and understanding what they mean. This is essential when learning a new language. You simply won't memorize the syntax without doing it (at least us mere mortals won't, there's always super-programmers who can just get it by glancing at it once).
leftnode··on Two Years of Pinboard
I love Pinboard. The killer feature is Twitter integration. I do 99% of my Twitter browsing on my phone, and when I see a link that might be interesting, I just favorite it and Pinboard comes by and picks up those favorites for me to read later.

Very awesome service.

leftnode··on A Walk in the Woods with Mark Zuckerberg
None, Facebook user counts are people who actively use the service.
leftnode··on SwissMiss Pimps Out Hotly Designed Gojee.com
Gojee.com is poorly tested because it was attempting to animate giant background images which bring an older machine or one without a GPU to a crawl.
leftnode··on What I learned today: Never apply for a job
It's not the anonymity that is bothersome, they're just horribly written job posts. And worse still: comments are disabled so we can't ask any further questions.
leftnode··on Cool notification messages with CSS3 & Jquery
Yes, this 1000x over. I hate it when you have a huge DOM being pushed down by 20px for a notification, go to click on a button just as the notification is closing itself.

I much prefer the notification to come down from the top, have slight transparency to show covered elements, and then a way to easily close it. Very similar to the demo.

leftnode··on 10000 things all CS students should do before graduating
Chill, I think it was just an example he used.
leftnode··on What PHP Needs
I almost posted a new Hacker News story, but I saw this and figured my blog post belongs here better. It's an old post I dug it.

leftnode··on Kind of Screwed
What are you not understanding? He's an influential blogger who has ads on his site and is writing about something that happened in his life.

There's a flow of money around every Tech Crunch article that is posted here, yet I don't see the same comments.

leftnode··on Why Scala seems difficult but really isn’t
I've given up PHP for Scala recently, and it doesn't seem too difficult yet. Do yourself a favor, pick up a copy of "Programming In Scala" by the languages author, and read it starting from page one, even if you think you're an expert programming.

I can't learn a new language quickly, so to learn I'm blogging about my experiences at http://leftnode.com and trying to write as many small programs as possible, moving into larger ones when I'm ready.

I'm trying to ignore many of the larger projects and in-depth Scala projects for the time being so I don't overwhelm myself and give up on learning the language.

leftnode··on Why moving to Scala - Part I - Writing less code
I've decided after 12 years of writing PHP to move to Scala. My (very limited) experience with it so far is that it is rock solid awesome.
leftnode··on Domainer Buys and Returns Domain Name to Amazon.com's Jeff Bezos
On a totally unrelated note, that may be the best restaurant website I've ever seen. Just gave me the facts, no Flash, I could see the menu and it works fine on a mobile phone. I wish all other restaurants would copy this template.
leftnode··on Dropbox Cofounder & CTO Arash Ferdowsi responds to yesterday's bug
Wouldn't a functional test have caught this better? Ideally a unit test would use mock objects for all external resources, so it probably wouldn't have caught this. A full end to end functional test would have.
leftnode··on Clarification of Immutable and Mutable Objects in Scala
Thank you, that's essentially what I thought, but you did a much better job of explaining it.
leftnode··on How Hackers Stole 200,000 Citi Accounts Just By Changing Numbers In The URL
What's worse: every customers ID in the database was stored in the URL or that there was no ACL to test against? If a user is logged in, you have their account ID stored in a session. If they navigate to a page that their account ID can't see (like another person's account), then kick them out. Astoundingly simple.
leftnode··on [dead]
Are the email addresses from a purchased list? Mailchimp might find it a little odd that you managed to collect 500,000 email addresses without having ever sent out an email before.

SES forces you to gradually ramp up send amounts by sending out small amounts of emails over several weeks.

Usually people sending bulk email at scale are doing it more than once. Sending out 500k messages once sounds very suspicious.

Bronto is a great platform for large sends.

leftnode··on Ask HN: How many programming languages need to learn?
Learn all of them. Yes, even Brainfuck and Piet.
leftnode··on Send text messages to your Dropbox.
You have an old "feature phone" (old Nokia phones, for example) that can still text just fine, but not run more modern apps. This is a perfect application for that.
leftnode··on Richard Dreyfuss' dramatic reading of the iTunes EULA
There's a recent South Park episode parodying the length and absurdity of Apple's EULA's and terms of agreement. The whole episode is great and does a pretty good job of goofing on Apple fanboyism.
leftnode··on $100k Revenues in One Month
Very awesome! To say I'm jealous is an understatement. One small nitpick, I thought the title meant you made $100,000 your first month alone. Congratulations none the less.
leftnode··on A Year After Diaspora Another “Facebook Alternative” Emerges
warez is pronounced "wares" and means your product or merchandise - http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/wares

But no, I assure you I wrote every line of it :)

leftnode··on A Year After Diaspora Another “Facebook Alternative” Emerges
Need to update my profile, didn't want to totally take over the thread with my warez.
leftnode··on A Year After Diaspora Another “Facebook Alternative” Emerges
I'm building an alternative to Facebook called Kwolla. You can install it on your own machine or use our API. I'm bootstrapping the entire thing. You can download my 1.x version of software for free or pay for a 2.0 pre-sale.

I wish I could get coverage like this. :)

leftnode··on Advanced Google Analytics for Startups
I've been looking for something like this. Thank you!
