leftnode··on Zenefits Scandal Highlights Perils of Hypergrowth at Startups
I don't think Uber and Airbnb have won at all. There is still tremendous push back against them, neither are public companies, and Uber specifically is burning cash at a tremendous rate.

Hey night last slightly longer than Zenefits, but I would expect to see major changes in how they operate.

I don't know enough about Draftkings to say one way or another other than it appears they have greased the right palms to continue to operate for the time being.

leftnode··on Ask HN: Is Python dying?
They're too busy getting paid writing Perl.
leftnode··on Deployer – A Deployment Tool for PHP
Have an intermediate build server like Jenkins or Bamboo that does all of that for you, packages everything up into a single deployable artifact (tarball, .deb, or RPM for example) and then deploy that out to each of your servers.
leftnode··on At Theranos, Many Strategies and Snags
I think the point is you can't fake it till you make it in medical science, and if you can, the outcomes usually aren't great.
leftnode··on Show HN: LoginBox – Authentication, payments and memberships from a single box
I built a similar "login as a service" three years ago, and the biggest I came across was that any modern web framework already includes authentication and user management out of the box. And user management that is guaranteed to integrate with the rest of the framework. It was a really difficult sell trying to convince developers to use my service rather than their own framework.
leftnode··on My life after 44 years in prison
Everything about this is ridiculous, but this especially so:

"Johnson’s release date was originally scheduled for earlier, but he ended up serving an additional eight months at the age of 69 for a juvenile shoplifting charge he received when he was 17."

How in any reasonable society is this justifiable? I re-read the sentence probably five times because I simply couldn't believe it.

leftnode··on Domain-validated SSL will soon be free from the large CAs
I think you're correct. The cost for an SSL certificate is trivial for any legitimate company, and the processing overhead to encrypt every request hasn't been a concern for years.
leftnode··on Twitter Sees 6% Increase in “Like” Activity After First Week of Hearts
It contains an interesting link you would want to read later? Pinboard can import favorited tweets and automatically store them as unread bookmarks, for example.
leftnode··on Introducing 1Password for Teams
1PW is without a doubt one of the nicest iOS and Mac programs I have ever used. It is gorgeous and just works. Well worth however much I spent on it.
leftnode··on Screenshots from developers and Unix people taken in 2002
I had the same exact response. "RtCW is 13+ years old!?" I spent so much time with that game.
leftnode··on PostgreSQL on the Command Line
Great article, I love psql. I also add \timing to my .psqlrc to see how long every query took.
leftnode··on Optimizely Raises $58M
I'm not sure why you're being down-voted but this was completely spot on.
leftnode··on Amazon Robotics
An interesting interview with the founder of Kiva on NPR's "From Scratch" - http://www.npr.org/2014/01/09/261095138/mick-mountz-founder-...
leftnode··on [dead]
She did and they said it was too late to return it.
leftnode··on How to Onboard Software Engineers
Yup, it's a great idea! In all of our applications we have a build-dev shell script that builds the application for development purposes.

New developers day 1: vagrant up; vagrant ssh; cd /path/to/app/on/vm; ./build-dev

And they're ready to go.

leftnode··on Bootstrap 4 alpha
Plus $99 is $0 for a company who wants a nice looking and well supported theme.
leftnode··on Jeff Bezos Says Amazon Won’t Tolerate ‘Callous’ Management Practices
Unless you're on a visa and having a job is a requirement of keeping said visa.
leftnode··on A Scripting Language for HTTP
Because then you'd just have Requests and normal Python which it sounds like the author wanted to avoid.
leftnode··on PostgreSQL 9.5 New Features with Examples [pdf]
Building Postgres from source for testing is relatively simple - at least on Ubuntu / Debian.

    useradd --home-dir /home/postgres \
        --create-home --shell /bin/bash \
        --user-group postgres

    apt-get install -y build-essential libkrb5-dev \
        libxml2 libxml2-dev libxslt1-dev \
        libossp-uuid-dev uuid python-dev \
        libreadline6 libreadline-dev

    ./configure --disable-debug --enable-thread-safety \
        --with-gssapi --with-openssl \
        --with-libxml --with-libxslt \
        --with-ossp-uuid --with-python \
        --without-bonjour

    make world && make install
    sudo su - postgres -c "/usr/local/pgsql/bin/initdb -D /home/postgres/cluster -E UTF8"
leftnode··on Ask HN: The Internet is getting lame. What's next?
Hahahaha what, that's completely crazy.
leftnode··on Reddit: A Nine-Year Case Study in Absentee Management
But it's still very well moderated.
leftnode··on GitHub Raises $250M at $2B Valuation
Yeah, there, are, um, a lot of them.
leftnode··on One in every 600 websites has .git exposed
Very simple setup. You have:

    .git
    web/index.php
    src/*.php
Make the document root /full/path/to/web/index.php.

Edit: Also use a deployment tool like Capistrano which removes the .git directory as well.

leftnode··on Dragula: Simple drag and drop
Or CBS with The Munsters?
leftnode··on Dropdowns Should Be the UI of Last Resort
While I completely agree with you - it's an ridiculous choice - you can just right click and click "Open Image in New Tab" in Chrome. Which ironically is located on the authors own domain.
leftnode··on OpenResty – A fast web app server by extending Nginx
The navigation on this site is possibly the worst ever conceived. You can't link to anything!
leftnode··on Project Seen
Yeah, you're right, they put absolutely no effort into this.
leftnode··on Rental America: Why the poor pay $4,150 for a $1,500 sofa (2014)
They'll get right on that when they're barely getting by week by week.

Between the mental exhaustion of crippling poverty combined with physical exhaustion from working incredibly demanding jobs, there's not a lot of time to learn personal finance. Not to mention, there's just not a lot of resources to do so for the poor.

Wheres the disdain for predatory companies who prey on that susceptibility?

leftnode··on How 500px serves up 500TB of high res photos
I'm getting the same thing and it's incredibly frustrating on an otherwise interesting article. I had to Right Click > "Open In New Tab" for links I wanted to read later.
leftnode··on Take the Money and Run
I loved AgileZen when it was first launched and I was a huge champion of it at Quickoffice. Definitely helped keep us organized and on track. Thanks for the write up and behind the scenes details - can't wait for part 2.
