leftnode··on You’re Never Too Old to Become a Beginner
I completely agree, especially if you are, like I imagine most HN readers are, already at the top of your professional field.

In 2019, I started training Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. It's had a dramatic improvement on every aspect of my life: health, weight loss, stress relief, mental fortitude, friendships, breathing, everything.

And in starting BJJ, you're going to be _awful_ at it. No matter how athletic you are, you're going to get destroyed (choked or joint locked) many, many, many times by people younger, older, weaker, stronger than you simply because they know more and have better technique. You really truly do start at the bottom.

It's exhilarating. Every day after work (or before), you and a bunch of friends go into a padded room, put on pajamas with a thick belt, and attempt to strangle and/or joint lock one another. You learn new techniques, body mechanics, and actual fighting techniques. When you're rolling with someone else, literally every other stress in the world melts away as you're trying to stop your opponent from submitting you while you're trying to submit them. It truly is physical chess, and there's nothing better than switching from the drudgery of a job to a night of martial arts.

leftnode··on Stripe’s payments APIs: the first ten years
Not the OP, but I visited the Stripe HQ back when they were around 50 people and they had a full time chef on staff. I spent an afternoon with them, which included a free lunch.
leftnode··on Why I Love Tailwind
Great marketing (and this is from a huge fan of Tailwind). Marketing, even for OSS projects, is incredibly important.
leftnode··on Roblox S-1
I had the same thought when my 10 year old showed me the games he plays on Roblox. Absolutely awful graphics, gameplay, "story", etc, but they are _obsessed_ with them.
leftnode··on Why it's so hard to find dumbbells in the US
Dumbbells may be harder to find, but Rogue has consistently had kettlebells (made in America, in various sizes) for the last several months. Kettlebells are amazing tools for exercise, and can offer more movements than just bodyweight alone.

Shipping is not cheap, but you can outfit a perfectly good home gym with 3 or 4 kettlebell sizes and a jump rope.

leftnode··on Deploys at Slack
And yet...it just works. And scales!
leftnode··on Ask HN: What are your news sources other than HN?
Perhaps they're not typical sources of news, but I enjoy ProPublica[1] and The Intercept[2] for deep investigative journalism.

leftnode··on Ask HN: Best Noise Canceling Headphones
Wirecutter[0] always has the best in-depth reviews for headphones (of every type). I have the Bose QC35's (older generation, they were just refreshed) and they are great. I would recommend over the ear, especially if you are using them on flights or a noisy office.

leftnode··on Google’s robots.txt parser is now open source
I expected the same (complex project structure, too many files, difficult to read, etc), but I love everything about this library. Easy to read, concise code, in two simple files. Very well tested, both by automated tests and the real world. Sticks to the Unix philosophy: does one thing and does it well.

Can you imagine how many billions of time this code has been executed? I love software like this.

leftnode··on The Man Behind “Fortnite”
A lot of high school memories this brings up. I was a huge UT player, in a clan, competed, everything.

I emailed Mark Rein in high school about getting into 3D programming. He was the president of Epic Games back then and emailed me back.

I stopped playing when I went to college. What happened to the UT fan base? Is there an article about it? Genuinely curious.

leftnode··on MailChimp vs. Amazon SES – How I Reduced My Monthly Bill
Likewise, we tried SES and had far too many emails going to our customer's SPAM folders, so we switched back to Mailchimp/Mandrill.
leftnode··on Some .io nameservers are returning wrong results again
Yup, seeing this as well for one of our .io domains.
leftnode··on Blue Apron Files for IPO
We canceled after a week precisely for this reason. I couldn't believe how much trash a single shipment generated.
leftnode··on Hanging up my spurs
I just started listening to StartUp as well (I like several other Gimlet shows) and he seems incredibly smart. StartUp is also a great podcast if anyone is looking for something to listen to (start from the first season).
leftnode··on My township calls my lawn ‘a nuisance’ (2015)
HOA fees pay for community upkeep as well, like a community park or pool or splashpad.
leftnode··on Peloton – a relational database designed for autonomous operation
How old is this project? I wouldn't be surprised to see a cease and desist from the maker of the exercise bike.
leftnode··on Music for Programming
Similarly, the OST to the movie Mr. Brooks is really good.
leftnode··on A Primer on Bézier Curves – B-Splines
One of my favorite acronyms: Non-Uniform Rational B-Spline. They were very popular in 3D modeling packages like Lightwave years ago.

Are they still used frequently in 3D modeling?

leftnode··on Chrome is warning users about insecure pages
We have a Metalsmith static site that requires "npm build" to build and Netlify seemed to figure it out automatically. Pulls directly from GitHub, built, deployed, SSL with LetsEncrypt. All for free.

Very nice service.

leftnode··on Ask HN: Where do you go for civil discussion on the Internet?
Same here, D&D is pretty good too.
leftnode··on El Chapo and the History of the Heroin Crisis
If you haven't, I highly suggest you read Don Winslow's two books about this: The Power of the Dog and The Cartel. Both are fantastic.
leftnode··on Thoughts on Uber’s List of Postgres Limitations
Can you expand on what you mean by a single table with manual indexes? How does a frequently used table with indexes not resemble an RDBMS?
leftnode··on What Happened to Howard Stern?
What's ironic is that most longtime fans hate the late career Howard Stern.

I've been a daily listener since 1997 and enjoy both pre-Sirius and post-Sirius shows immensely.

leftnode··on What do the wealthiest know that others don't?
Anecdotal, I know, but look at all the recent articles where 53% of American's don't have $1000 in liquid cash, or hell just read /r/personalfinance for your daily dose of poor financial decisions.
leftnode··on What do the wealthiest know that others don't?
Moreover, a really nice couch will probably run you north of $2000. We have dogs, three kids six and under, things get messy. A cheap pleather couch from Big Lots is $350 (and is plenty comfortable). I'd rather buy a handful of those over the next 15 years and just throw them out when they're destroyed than a nice $2000-$3000 couch.

(Note: I haven't read the article yet, I'm planning on doing so, and I generally agree with buying nicer well made things, BIFL, but sometimes it's easier/cheaper to buy something you know will be ruined and you won't care as much).

leftnode··on PHP Sucks
I used to feel the same way a lot of times, a shame it seems for being a PHP dev. Now, I don't care. I've been using it since 1999, and I use it to get stuff done.

My customers and users of my applications don't care what it's written in.

But, you should definitely learn more languages as a programmer.

> And to anyone considering programming as a career, or trying to get into it... stay away from PHP.

This is the part I disagree with the most. The language is getting better and better with every release. It's incredibly fast, much safer to use (the Error exception type, scalar static type hints, all the garbage from the early 2000's has been removed), and easy to work with. The ecosystem (with the introduction of Composer) has _completely_ changed and reinvigorated the language. It's easily one of the best package managers out there. I definitely recommend giving PHP a look or a second change if you've written it off.

leftnode··on How to Make Pittsburgh a Startup Hub
Yes, there is. UT Dallas is third ranked public school in Texas and a top tier STEM research school. Dallas is perhaps best suited for building a company.
leftnode··on State of Bootstrap 4 vs. Foundation
I believe Foundation has Flexbox support as well: http://foundation.zurb.com/sites/docs/flexbox.html
leftnode··on An administrator accidentally deleted the production database
You can also start all of your commands with "BEGIN;" (at least in Postgres) to ensure you're in a transaction you can easily rollback.

Another trick it to start all "DELETE" commands as a "SELECT" to ensure you get the "WHERE" part correct, and then swap out the "SELECT *" with a "DELETE".

leftnode··on FTP Must die the technical explanation
FTP (and SFTP) is very heavily used in enterprise software, especially when two pieces of software are being integrated.

(S)FTP support has been baked into huge ERP systems like Oracle and SAP for years (I would be very surprised if BitTorrent was even on a list of development features), and when you're working with a company who has a $100mm SAP installation, you transfer files using (S)FTP.

I just finished a large integration with SAP where all of the data was transferred using files over SFTP. We have a modern REST API they could use as well, but that would've added a lot longer time to the integration as it wasn't already baked into SAP (plus, moving large files over HTTP is not ideal).
