lee··on Tell HN: I made $1000 with my app and now making $500/mo
That's amazing and inspiring.

I had thought about making a 5/3/1 app when I got into powerlifting but thought to myself "nah, no one would pay for it and there're so many apps out there already". The inspiration here is that I need to validate my assumptions or really be skeptical about them.

Congrats!

lee··on Modern Python Performance Considerations
For startups it's a matter of rapidly developing an MVP to validate your business and iterating quickly.

Developer salaries are way higher than CPU and server costs. Productivity wins out here vs. performance.

lee··on Manager's Handbook (2020)
I really like how the book's website is structured.

Does anyone know what app they used to create the handbook?

lee··on Ask HN: If you used to be socially awkward and shy, how did you improve?
Yes, MDMA doesn't break down into methamphetamine. They are different drugs with different metabolites and metabolic pathways.

MDMA breaks down into MDA, HMMA, HMA, DHA, MDP2P, MDOH.

Not sure why you have to insult someone in this discussion?

lee··on Ask HN: If you used to be socially awkward and shy, how did you improve?
US drug scheduling is incredibly political and does not reflect how harmful a drug is.

As an example, cocaine is a schedule 2 drug but magic mushrooms, which has the lowest potential for harm (even lower than caffeine), is a schedule 1 drug.

lee··on Ask HN: If you used to be socially awkward and shy, how did you improve?
I developed my social skills in a similar fashion.

I was incredibly closed off as a teenager and shy. Almost to the point of crippling social anxiety. I remember feeling anxiety even interacting with the cashier at McDonald's.

I was 19 when I went to a rave and took MDMA for the first time and it completely opened me up. I became incredibly social in that moment, talking to strangers, having a good time, and opening up emotionally. That enabled me to take more baby steps in social interactions and develop socially.

Magic mushrooms also seemed to allow me to open up. Both drugs have had positive lasting effects on me. I had stopped taking them in my early 20s, but have started experimenting with magic mushrooms again as someone in their late 30s. The shrooms renewed my openness to others.

lee··on Ask HN: Any weird tips for weight loss?
Do a 24 hour fast (or longer if you can) to feel the sensation of hunger, and train yourself to understand that "it's okay to feel hungry" and that you don't need to always have your stomach filled with food.

I started losing weight when I counted calories and switched to an intermittent fasting window where I only eat between Noon and 5 PM. Yes, I feel hunger when I wake up but I'm "OK" with feeling that way until I allow myself to eat at noon.

lee··on Masterclass on mathematical thinking
This comment bothered me for a few reasons:

1. Masterclass is $20/month. The "masses" can absolutely afford it. It's not really a barrier for entry.

2. There's tons of free lecture content already. Khan Academy is a great example and it'll actually dive deeper than a short episodes.

3. If you're an American, $20/month is laughable for an education. Getting a post-secondary education is like getting a mortgage.

4. Why do we have to knock on highly produced commercial edutainment? It is not a threat to any other form of education by any stretch. At least someone watching this may get inspired or motivated to keep learning more Math.

lee··on Ask HN: Solving problems by mapping to other problems that we know how to solve
I love this answer, because it is such a "duh" answer but also so non-obvious (at least for me).

We're taught so much about the mechanics and details about mathematics in school, that I've never taken a step back to understand it from a fundamental/philosophical level for what it is. Beautiful answer.

lee··on Health Canada authorizes psychedelic drugs for therapies
Magic mushrooms are now entering in the "gray zone" of legality in Canada. They are illegal, but there are online mushroom dispensaries in Canada that are blatantly selling them online as law enforcement is turning a blind eye to it.

A few weeks ago I ordered an ounce of shrooms online using a crypto-currency that has a smiling Japanese dog for a mascot. A week later it arrived in my mailbox without any issues. What a time to be alive.

lee··on I quit caffeine
I never understood why people go cold-turkey to get off of the coffee addiction. Simply drink less coffee and gradually lower your intake. You can avoid the absolute misery of the withdrawal symptoms this way.

Drink half your intake for a few days. Then halve that amount again. Soon enough you'll have weaned yourself off caffeine without the disruption.

lee··on Intellectual Loneliness
It doesn't sound like he has "intellectual loneliness". Instead, it sounds like he's unopen to the ideas or interests of others and has a very narrow set of interests.

It is both possible to be a great intellectual AND have an ability to appreciate the company of others.

The world isn't full of just interesting ideas but also events and people too. It sounds like he's unable to expand beyond "intellectualism" as the only worthwhile thing to do. That's fine if that's his choice...but there's a certain smugness he carries with that attitude.

lee··on Ask HN: Favorite Podcast Episode of 2021?
Huberman Labs podcast is exceptional.

So many episodes are great on their own. But the one on how to optimize your health condenses a lot of the protocols: https://open.spotify.com/episode/7yCNZihpjlmyNLI93SjmO0?si=8...

lee··on Omicron variant more resistant to vaccine but causes less severe Covid: study
Additionally, the demographics of South Africa are different too. The median age is significantly lower than most Western countries.
lee··on Sleep technique used by Salvador Dalí works
Perhaps this is the why so many of the 60's and 70's psychedelic rock songs are so enchanting and beautiful. They were under the influence of psychedelic drugs which may induce this state while awake.
lee··on Germany locks down unvaccinated people, as leaders plan to make shots compulsory
> "We have viable treatments that work and could be prescribed en masse. Not discussed, not mentioned."

Can you explicitly mention what those treatments are? I'm genuinely curious.

lee··on Ask HN: What does one look for in a laptop these days?
Since it doesn't seem to be listed often in this thread: noise and heat management

I have a Dell Latitude 7300 and it gets incredibly hot. They tried to optimize for size, so it has tiny fans that are incredibly loud when it spins up and they designed the aluminum body to act as a heat sink.

The problem is that when I close the laptop when it's docked, the screen traps the heat and the fans start to whine like a jet engine. Even when it's idling it's loud, so I have to leave the laptop open and on its side when docked to allow for proper heat dissipation.

lee··on What Does Evergrande Meltdown Mean for China?
My understanding is that if you are a saver and own assets, hopefully assets that grow with inflation, you actually "benefit".

For example, the incredible rise in stock market prices isn't necessarily related to increased wealth generation but is instead a result of inflation.

So if you are a saver and have some tangible assets, such as stocks, real estate, or even crypto, then you're "safe". Those who really suffer are those who don't have assets since salaries and wages don't rise as quickly with inflation.

lee··on What I Learnt Becoming a Tech Lead
I don't think that applies to just the military. If you actively disobey your boss' direction and do something completely opposite, I'm sure you'd be dismissed or punished for that too.
lee··on What I Learnt Becoming a Tech Lead
I don't think effective leadership requires that you be highly respected for your technical skills. Leadership requires that you're at least competent in technical understanding, but also competent across multiple domains too.

They don't have to be the most technical, but have enough chops to smell BS when it's being sold.

A good comparison would be how a good military captain or general doesn't have to be the best marksman, medic, or radioman, but they should know enough to coordinate those roles and understand how they should work.

lee··on Wildtype: Sushi-grade salmon grown from Pacific Salmon cells
> you destroyed something that had the potential of becoming a tree. Not really sure why you want to separate these out into two distinct entities

They are two distinct entities: the acorn in front of you actually exists as a collection of cells. The tree does not. The tree is an abstraction... a myth in your mind. It does not have any true physical properties.

Every egg is not a chicken. Every sperm is not a person. It has the potential, yes, but in the present moment an egg is simply an egg.

lee··on Wildtype: Sushi-grade salmon grown from Pacific Salmon cells
It would not be murder to travel back in time and kill two cells that had the potential of becoming "me". I don't believe in some meta-physical soul or essence, so there is no "me" in the two cells.

I exist today as a configuration of cells and experiences combined together.

If you crushed an acorn did you destroy a tree? Absolutely not... you simply crushed an acorn.

lee··on Wildtype: Sushi-grade salmon grown from Pacific Salmon cells
What is "it" from ever living. An stack of lumber does not make a table. The table doesn't exist until the wood is configured as such.

If this salmon meat is grown by replicating cells, then there was no "life" that was denied. Your statement would imply that it "existed" somehow before it came into some physical form.

lee··on Java Is Underhyped
Java is the mini-van of programming languages.

It's not fast, not specialized, but is completely adequate for almost all use cases.

A mini-van is incredibly boring, but that's also it's best selling point.

lee··on What I learnt after burning $10M as an entrepreneur
One aspect of bootstrapping I imagine is the "fail-fast" principle. If you can't compete while spending less than your revenue you should take it as a sign that your current business is not "boot-strappable".

Doesn't sound like he bootstrapped.

lee··on The world is facing a coffee deficit
I often wean myself off of coffee so that my sensitivity to it returns.

One tip for those trying to reduce or stop their coffee in-take: you don't have to go cold turkey.

Just gradually reduce. I'm always surprised at the amount of people who put themselves through misery trying to abruptly stop. You could even go as gradual as reducing your coffee intake by 25% a day. After a few days it'll be a gentle let down.

lee··on Mushrooms Can Eat Plastic, Petroleum and CO2 (2018)
"The mushrooms’ enzymes re-manufactured the hydrocarbons into carbohydrates, fungal sugars,"

I wonder if the process would be similar for plastics. If so, it could then be used as feed. I don't see any information, but the fungus grown from plastic might not be toxic.

lee··on What if a pill can change your politics or religious beliefs?
This matches my anecdotal experience. I was extremely reserved and had a high amount of social anxiety. It hindered my ability to do common day tasks. Even ordering fast food caused a bit of anxiety as I would have to interact with the cashier.

A single MDMA experience broke me out of my shell. It's hard to describe how profoundly it changed my life.

lee··on BHP to destroy at least 40 Aboriginal sites, up to 15K years old, to expand mine
I believe you're getting downvoted because your comment is completely unrelated.
lee··on Fitful nightly sleep linked to chronic inflammation, hardened arteries
I remember getting a sleep study where they titrated for my cpap pressure. I woke up leaving that morning feeling like superman. It was as though a long fog was lifted from my brain.

I've been using CPAP for 9 years now and I can't imagine my life without it.
