ledoge··on There's a high chance of devices being sold with GrapheneOS preinstalled in 2027
Current street prices in Austria:

~750€ for the Motorola Signature, with 512 GB storage

~900€ for the Pixel 10 Pro XL, with 256 GB storage (the 11 Pro XL costs much more at ~1200€, since it just came out a month ago)

All the Chinese phones that still have a high capacity battery in the EU use a dual-cell battery. If you look up the part number for yours (BP5H), you can see that it looks like two batteries glued together rather than a single solid chunk. That split slightly reduces the capacity compared to the models sold in China, but it allows them to exceed the 20 Wh limit.
ledoge··on Tell HN: PayPal Blocks GrapheneOS
A normal GrapheneOS installation uses Android Verified Boot with a locked bootloader, and does not give the user root access. Google's Play Integrity cannot be used to verify the integrity of the OS (as GrapheneOS is not approved by Google), but equivalent verification can be done using standard Android APIs and GrapheneOS's public keys.
ledoge··on Firefox intent to ship: JPEG XL
AVIF supports regular AV1 videos, there is no intra-only constraint. You can try this yourself with any AV1 video:

ffmpeg -i input.webm -c:v copy output.avif

You are right about Firefox and Chrome not using hardware decoding though, as such an AVIF video plays back poorly. And Chrome refuses to load an AVIF larger than 256 MB on my machine.

ledoge··on Devices with GrapheneOS support should be available in 2027
No current Motorola phones meet their hardware requirements. 2027 flagship models will be the first to be supported.

ledoge··on I stopped trusting USB-C cable labels and started testing them
Are you buying ones that are "Ultra High Speed" HDMI certified? At least in theory, those should all be able to handle the maximum 48 Gbps bandwidth supported by HDMI 2.1
ledoge··on LG to ban residential proxies from smart TV apps
I think they meant that the use of cookies for analytics/tracking, which is what triggers the popup requirement, would have been considered malicious.
ledoge··on VTubing: How a Japanese Phenomenon Is Going Worldwide
Strange omission to talk about the general anti-AI sentiment, while not mentioning that the #3 most-watched English VTuber (Neuro-sama) is an LLM – who is actually widely accepted as a "good" use of AI by other VTubers and viewers.
ledoge··on FFmpeg 9.1's new AAC encoder
It doesn't let me edit the link, but I'm confused by what even happened here... I posted this from my phone and that wrong link doesn't show up in my clipboard history.

Link should be: https://hydrogenaudio.org/index.php/topic,129691.0.html

ledoge··on NIST scientists create 'any wavelength' lasers
That's the easy part, just use a color space with imaginary primaries (see e.g. ProPhoto RGB), or use one with real primaries that allows for negative values – e.g. Windows uses floating point scRGB for HDR, which is just linear BT.709/sRGB, but negative RGB values can be used to cover the full range of real and imaginary colors.
ledoge··on JPEG Compression
> png (no compression)

To be clear, PNG only supports lossless compression, while WebP has separate lossy and lossless modes. AVIF can do lossless compression too, but you're usually better off using WebP or PNG (if you need >8 bpc) instead as it really isn't good at that.

Interesting side note: By design, Android lets any app escalate its privileges to root when SELinux is disabled: https://www.reddit.com/r/Android/comments/lfye5r/comment/gmo...

Therefore, just the boot parameter injection can be used to get temporary root privileges on a whole bunch of phones.

> This was the exact same technique that was used in 2021 by Audacity's update mechanism, which also redirected traffic to servers hosted in other Aeza Group ASNs and planted a dropper for later campaigns.

I can't find anything about this, can you link a source?

ledoge··on Opus 1.6 Released – Interactive Audio Codec
I believe they meant saving space by converting a lossless collection to a good lossy format like Opus.

ledoge··on Julian Assange granted permission to appeal against extradition to US
Court documents can be found here: https://www.judiciary.uk/judgments/assange-v-government-of-t...

Paragraph 210 of the judgment argues why the US's kidnapping/assassination plot is not a valid ground for refusing the extradition:

> [...] On the face of the allegations (on the evidence before the judge and the fresh evidence) the contemplation of extreme measures against the applicant (whether poisoning for example or rendition) were a response to the fear that the applicant might flee to Russia. The short answer to this, is that the rationale for such conduct is removed if the applicant is extradited. Extradition would result in him being lawfully in the custody of the United States authorities, and the reasons (if they can be called that) for rendition or kidnap or assassination then fall away.

And the ones that don't almost universally lock you out of all other color settings when enabling it, often even including brightness. It's ridiculous.

Also, thanks for the shoutout :)

The Signal desktop application doesn't have such a requirement. Unlike WhatsApp, it doesn't connect to your phone. You just scan a QR code for the initial setup and after that it's completely independent.
