ledgerdev··on I don't need your query language
I recall Anders saying on some podcast they did that so they could provide auto-complete. Funny thing is that I used it for a couple years, but almost never use the linq syntax any more, and not sure why.
ledgerdev··on Zap – Fast backends in Zig
Seeing this, and the use of zig for https://github.com/tigerbeetledb/tigerbeetle I wonder if zig might become a good tradeoff vs rust for servers if in long term it's more readable and maintainable and with a different approach to quality.

I would also be interested to hear the compile time, binary size and memory usage of those example apps.

Looks like the underlying facil.io library hasn't seen any commits since 2021, so that's a bit of a red flag. https://github.com/boazsegev/facil.io

ledgerdev··on Ask HN: If we make it open source, how do we monetize it?
A good discussion on open source in latter part of this podcast. https://www.se-radio.net/2023/05/se-radio-563-david-cramer-o...
ledgerdev··on Pro-cash movement warns that people could be losing more than they bargained for
I also feel strongly we need some sort of semi-local payment system that connects merchants, local banks and customers. Sending a payment to my local municipality should not involve wall street.
ledgerdev··on Native AOT Overview
I was able to use aot and System.Text.Json in a test app. You only need to put an attribute on a class to specifying the type info, and then pass a type enum when you serialize/deserialize. I was surprised how easy it was because I had been really concerned about reflection based stuff like json.
ledgerdev··on Nginx 1.25.0: experimental HTTP/3 support
Interesting, how does QUIC help with 'arbitrary censorship'?
ledgerdev··on A digital payments revolution in India
Any possibility for some regional/local/state payment system in the US that's not a 3% tax on every purchase?
ledgerdev··on GlitchTip: An open source, Sentry API compatible error tracking platform
So, I noticed this past week that u-block is blocking browser error reporting on their hosted product. I tested a custom subdomain using their relay container, as well as just a sub-path on primary domain and both were also blocked. This seems like an Achilles heel for sentry.

Any thoughts on how to get info on front end problems for people with ad-blockers which would appear to be in use by ~40% of users? I almost feel like we need some web framework level error reporting that isn't as obvious that it get's picked up by ad-blockers.

ledgerdev··on CheerpJ 3.0: a JVM replacement in HTML5 and WASM to run Java on modern browsers
Maybe embed wasmtime? I'm familiar with https://github.com/bytecodealliance/wasmtime-dotnet but perhaps this for jvm? https://github.com/kawamuray/wasmtime-java/blob/master/examp...

I too love the idea of embedding wasm modules to be used across platforms.

ledgerdev··on Mjolnir
I was just looking at this case again, and apparently the T1 V2 does have a front power button, so excellent.
ledgerdev··on Mjolnir
Are there any solutions for a power button on the front of the machine?
ledgerdev··on Poll: What's the best laptop for Linux these days?
I would like to just put a warning out to others to avoid nvidia+laptop+linux. I got an X1E several years ago with the idea it would be my daily driver and thought problems would eventually get ironed out, but that was wrong.

Issues include lack of nightlight on wayland, random boot/cpu lockups where OS won't load probably 30% of the time, obsidian(electron?) has weird issues typing where keystrokes undo and then re-do, lack of thunderbolt dock support for wired ether-net. That's all I can recall for the moment, there are others.

ledgerdev··on SaaS Deployment Options
Are they data sensitive in terms of trusting your saas to survive and wanting export/backups? Or data sensitive in terms of not trusting the security of your saas to secure certain pieces of sensitive data?

If it's the second, one idea I have considered building is a proxy operated by customer that replaces sensitive data with a token and then passes it onto your systems. Any responses that need to display/reveal the data can then have the sensitive data swapped back in based on the permissions of the user making the request. This puts the sensitive data fully in control of the proxy and it never touches the saas app.

ledgerdev··on Ask HN: Skeptical about my company going “full serverless”. What am I missing?
My initial impression is NOPE, and the fact this cloud architect is pushing you towards azure functions says a lot. The run on windows, take forever to cold start but do work ok for background processes. Given you mention user facing endpoints, prepare yourself for 15+ second cold start times while they boot a windows VM for your function, and no private subnet for the functions either. The answer to this is a super expensive "Premium Plan" which basically just rebranded app service which runs the VM's for you full time at double the price. I have used them and am not an azure functions fan myself.

In the azure world, a more modern option going forward is azure container apps which just run docker containers, but you still will have 8+ second cold starts and will need to run at least a single instance full time, but it's cheaper than functions premium. Also would suggest looking at an evented architecture using dapr which is built into ACA. In the GCP world cloud run is frankly amazing.

ledgerdev··on Available today: The Windows 11 2022 Update
I greatly miss the virtual desktop switching animation. Any word on virtual desktop switching slide animation being part of this update?
ledgerdev··on Ask HN: Inherited the worst code and tech team I have ever seen. How to fix it?
> This business unit has a pretty aggressive roadmap as management and HQ has no real understanding of these blockers.

> Resistance to change is huge.

These 2 quotes tell me they haven't yet recognized the grave danger and pain of their complexity. They will eventually, but for now neither management nor the team seem open to the radical change which they desperately need. Eventually collapse will come, but for now it's a no-win situation for you. Unless the money is insanely good and worth the stress, best path is to get the heck out.

What industry and type of business is this?

ledgerdev··on Good CI/CD and SRE Blogs

ledgerdev··on Thunderbolt, Displayport and Docks
Guess what, my Lenovo TB4 dock isn't compatible with lenovo TB3 laptops.. go figure, better yet just buy a framework!
ledgerdev··on Show HN: I'm building an open-source Amazon
I've been thinking about a clone of amazon marketplace that can be run/operated by small cities/towns to support local commerce. Anyone have any thoughts on this or seen any other similar projects?
ledgerdev··on SQLite: Past, Present, and Future
If it's good enough for avionics and nuclear subs, it's probably good enough for most web apps.
ledgerdev··on SQLite: Past, Present, and Future
Here's sqlite doing 100 million inserts in 33 seconds which should fit into nearly every workload, though it is batched. https://avi.im/blag/2021/fast-sqlite-inserts/

So write contention from multiple connections is what you're talking about, versus a single process using sqlite?

ledgerdev··on Performance Improvements in .NET 7
The good news is that .net7 aot supports console apps so lamdas can already be native aot. Json serialization was a concern of mine, but it was surprising easy to get working with very minor changes in the call. If I were building lambdas would move it asap.
ledgerdev··on Performance Improvements in .NET 7
I would like to host .net based api on google cloud run and azure container apps, which often will go to sleep after about 10 minutes without a request, so cold start time do matter quite a bit. I've done pretty extensive testing and see ~4-7 second cold starts with classic non aot mvc versus ~500ms with natively compiled golang/.net.

The reality of the cloud is that sleep & cold starts are very common and in fact necessary to run efficient systems. Half a second is acceptable but 4+ seconds is not and so aot is very important for future apps.

ledgerdev··on Performance Improvements in .NET 7
It definitely will eventually, probably .net8 timeframe. It will be hard to support so many dynamic features and no doubt will make extensive use of Source Generators. https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/dotnet/csharp/roslyn-sdk/so...

Anyone have any interest in a small c# aot micro web framework that cold starts up fast (~500ms, vs ~4s for non aot mvc) on serverless containers like google cloud run?

ledgerdev··on Ask HN: Boring but important tech no one is working on?
This is a good video on the transfer of knowledge and fragility of technology. https://youtu.be/ZSRHeXYDLko
ledgerdev··on A plain-text file format for todos and check lists
I do exactly the same, and also use a tilda for tasks in progress, and 2 periods for those that are blocked. Sometimes simpler is better.
ledgerdev··on .NET 6 is now in Ubuntu 22.04
Super easy to package into docker. Then run at google cloud run or azure container apps. Both are amazing.
ledgerdev··on .NET 6 is now in Ubuntu 22.04
Yep, very similar to the JVM. Also .net7 is releasing platform native aot exe compilation (for simple scenarios) so you don't have to run the full CLR & JIT saving lots of memory.
ledgerdev··on .NET 6 is now in Ubuntu 22.04
Extremely unlikely vs will ever run on linux, pretty sure it's built using wpf which is window only. The tooling on linux is just fine, and VSCode and Jetbrains rider are your main options.
ledgerdev··on Will Bun JavaScript Take Node's Crown
It might not seem like it but a vast majority of developers exist outside of hacker news sphere and have no doubt that windows is by far the most popular dev platform. WSL2 is making this a lot easier to use linux though.
