I'd loose more sleep over DMV employees having their benefits cut personally.
You don't have to move far up the chain before you see some serious violence. Personal use weed dealer? Probably not going to get killed. But robbed? Yes, definitely, seen it happen many times. Personal use coke, ecstasy, heroin dealer? Much more likely to experience violence. The dealer one level above, supplying the personal use dealers? They get killed all the time, despite not being drug kingpins in any sense. It only costs 1000$-2000$ to have someone killed in many parts of the US, so that should say something about the chance of violence that small-time dealers face.
Silk Road was more than personal use sales, I'd bet the majority of its revenue came from pounds and half pounds of weed, sheets of LSD, and orders of 500+ ecstasy pills. Heroin and coke haven't caught on as much yet in the online scene, with prices still a little above what well-connected users can get on the streets, but give it time. Also keep in mind that the online drug scene is more than just SR/BMR/Sheep and that there are private forums that deal strictly in wholesale.
I didn't mean to imply any skepticism over the two numbers being different, though I can see how you got that from what I wrote. I brought up both because here he is making one impossible claim, and previously he made an even more impossible claim along the same lines.
Crime is way down in Minneapolis since the mid-1990s though, apparently in 1995 North Minneapolis blocks had the highest rate of violent crime per capita in the nation.
Looking at this table of murders by city internationally, it should be pretty obvious what all these locations have in common...
What about a billionaire cigarette tycoon, drug lord, or arms dealer?

Their product had "value" in the sense that somebody was willing to pay for it, but clearly it's possible to become a billionaire while having a net negative effect on society.
When linguists say that a language has minimally contrastive vowel length, they mean that a single vowel can be pronounced with either a short or long duration, resulting in totally different words.
So in Khmer...
យឹត /jɨt/ means "to scold"
and
យឺត /jɨɨt/ means "slow"
A long vowel is indicated typically in the IPA either by doubling the vowel symbol as I did above or by placing a macron on the vowel (a line over the top, as in /ā/).
As was mentioned, the terms "long vowel" and "short vowel" learned in English class are misleading and bear no reality to the duration of English vowels.
I can't say whether or not there is a genetic component to incidents of mauling involving pitbulls, but people are a large part of the problem too.
I'll check out more VU, any suggestions for songs/albums in a similar vein (experimental, noisy, good guitar/bass interplay, heavily instrumental)?
99% of the time I have no regrets about moving here from the United States. That other 1% of the time when you are sick or require the services of the police, it's not the best place to be. My insurance plan covers an airlift to Thailand in the event of a serious emergency.
Study 4 (the one about the rain, and the topic of the blog post) doesn't have the same controls. Why? I find this pretty odd.
Blog author even calls this study "the most compelling evidence", only to correctly recognize that it's total shit in the final paragraph.
I'm all for writing an article on a bad study (sort of like a bad album review), but the opinion of the author should be clear from the outset.
Prohibiting substances will never stop users from seeking them out. It will however make their use less safe (contamination, mislabeling, inconsistent purity, dirty needles, hesitance to seek medical attention for fear of prosecution, lack of available research on currently illegal substances hindering treatment of overdoses, etc.) and create a black market around the distribution of those substances (leading to violent crime, overflowing prisons, traumatized neighborhoods and broken families, etc.).
If fact, all of our available evidence from countries that have decriminalized hard drugs points to a reduction in abuse. That's just intuitive to me... wouldn't you be more likely to relapse if you were a felon unable to find gainful employment? Or a mother whose son just got shot for pushing crack on the corner? The repercussions of breaking up families, criminalizing and incarcerating our most vulnerable members of society, and exacerbating violence in our poorest communities cannot be understated. The drug war has caused a whole plague of societal ills, one of which ironically appears to be higher rates of drug abuse.
What taejo is saying is that native Korean speakers will hear [g] and [k] as the same (they are allophones in Korean), however the sound [kʰ] (aspirated voiceless velar stop) will sound distinct to them compared to [g] or [k].
Aspiration is a large cue for English speakers as well in distinguishing between voiced and voiceless consonant pairs ([pʰ] and [b], [tʰ] and [d], [kʰ] and [g]), hence why partial or even full devoicing can occur in word-initial voiced stops like the /g/ in "game" (as yongjik mentioned), or why English speakers have such trouble replicating voiced and voiceless pairs in languages like Spanish that do not rely on aspiration.
The site that this data is sourced from, www.metal-archives.com, might be of interest to some non-metalheads. It is an excellent example of a impressively complete crowd-sourced archive and a testament to the huge nerd/collector/aspie population in metal.
This site is somehow affiliated with ANUS? It doesn't seem to bear their characteristic writing style or ideological bent.
Either you work at IKEA or you played drums for Bathory, because your knowledge is at the level of dare we say it, the cloven hooved one himself. That’s right, we’re talking about Ingvar Kamprad. We’re almost afraid to ask you to peep out our agency site. But please do, oh dark master.
And I don't even listen to a quarter as much Black Metal as I do Death or Thrash... yikes. I've only been to Ikea once though, so my strategy was to guess Ikea for every name that I didn't specifically recognize as a metal band. "Norden" almost tripped me up.
500 grams heroin x 200$/gram = 100,000$
100 grams meth x 200$/gram = 20,000$
320,000$ revenue in 5 months is not bad, considering that dealers of hard drugs at least double up on their investment. I can also think of vendors on SR that were moving a lot more weight than this, just based on their public feedback. Plus keep in mind that some of the largest vendors were not publicly listed.
Over 1 1/2 years ago, the vendor tony76 made off with over 100,000$ in a single week in one of the largest SR scams.
Weed on the other hand I used in massive amounts, so I'm sure that was part of my fixation. It was ingrained into all of my daily routines (exercise, waking up, sleeping, eating, coursework, socializing), plus I began smoking during a rough period in life so maybe that's why it had such a hold on me. Thanks for the encouragement!
Years ago I was a daily cocaine user, tried heroin a few times, etc. but letting go of those was easy for me. When I decided to stop, it was over and I haven't touched them since. With marijuana I had wanted to quit for at least a year before I succeeded. The adverse effect on my life was clear, but the ritual was completely ingrained. I eventually managed to quit by radically changing my lifestyle so that I was no longer surrounded by the culture and the drug itself.
I still definitely have cravings, especially at night, and very occasionally I need to go have a few beers as some sort of substitution therapy (even though I don't really enjoy alcohol, and never drank before quitting).
That said, I agree that the author of the article is being ridiculously presumptuous and is wrong about the mentality of most marijuana users. (Edit: I also think this guy is totally, totally full of shit and making up the entire story.)
I've actually had my home raided before... not fun. Fortunately I no longer live in America.

P.S. federal agents, I don't use recreational drugs (anymore), I'm simply a longtime occasional reader of the SR forum... so please don't come kicking down my door.
