leblancfg··on Barriers to Business – How cities can pave a path to entrepreneurship
Agree with this push a hundred percent. I’d love to see numbers for Canada too, my suspicion is that it’s even worse. Starting a business here feels a lot like trying to cross the border in the game Papers Please.

My buddy opened a small guitar pedal shop from his attic, and was promptly told by the city he was circumventing zoning regulations, and was eventually forced to find a spot in the “industrial” sector, even though he was a tiny operation.

If politicians want to actually support small businesses and entrepreneurship, IMO auditing current bylaws and processes is the way to go.

Edit: words

leblancfg··on Vangelis has died
This makes me very, very sad. One of my favourite composers are artists, with an amazing knack for melody. And he was still cranking out new music!
leblancfg··on Stop Brainstorming
I've had SOME great brainstorming sessions that provided great ideas for paths forward when starting new projects. I think that last part is important. Specifically, the "Discover" part of the double diamond design process.

In the cited article, sure the faster problem solvers will solve more individually. But

1) the proper grain to measure success is as the team level, and

2) it's easy to score a problem with a known answer, but it is significantly harder for a group to come to consensus as to what the best answer might be – you can't always just crunch the numbers to see who was right.

The advantages of the brainstorm at the team level can be profound: they can reach consensus as to what these better options are, as well as a shared understanding of the problem space and what the next steps are.

leblancfg··on The Bicycle Thief (2019)
A sprint cyclist Olympic hopeful would have been squatting for years at this point. Maybe rusty, but

leblancfg··on “Death” one of 5 ways to lose at Chess, according to PGN standard
I imagine if this was ever used, it would be mostly for correspondence games, which can last up to many years.
leblancfg··on Mosquito saliva alone has profound effects on the human immune system (2018)
I’d say humans’ success rate at modifying ecosystems to eliminate parasites is… a failure at best.

Life, uh, finds a way.

So I wouldn’t advocate for that approach.

leblancfg··on ALiEn – a GPU-accelerated artificial life simulation program
Thank you for letting me find my next read! Loved Egan's Diaspora years ago, looking forward to this one.
leblancfg··on I Stopped Hiring Ivy League Graduates
Yeah agreed, I wasn't being clear there.
leblancfg··on I Stopped Hiring Ivy League Graduates
TL;DR: An ecumenical and conservative religious journal has stopped hiring Ivy League graduates as they "[can] make inflammatory accusations at the drop of a hat".

I had never heard of this journal before, but I can't say that I'm quite surprised by this statement given the unprecedented left/right schism in the US. Not arguing for/against it, I just don't think it's newsworthy enough to make HN front page.

leblancfg··on A URL Lengthener
Neat! That link worked for me on the latest Chrome ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
leblancfg··on Home-Built Scanning Tunneling Microscope (2015)
Can we add [2015] to the title?
leblancfg··on The Python Package Index is now a GitHub secret scanning integrator
They acquired LGTM (https://github.com/marketplace/lgtm) not too long ago, so expect this to happen.
leblancfg··on Euler's Fizzbuzz (2020)
The lambda's purpose here is only to turn it into a one-liner. It can be rewritten as

    def fizzbuzz(n):
        num_map = { 1: n, 6: "Fizz", 10: "Buzz", 0: "FizzBuzz" }
        return num_map[n**4%15]

    for i in range(100):
        print(fizzbuzz(i + 1))

The real skill would be to demonstrate that you know/remember/can apply Euler's totient theorem off-the-cuff in an interview!
leblancfg··on The Mutable Gallery
To the author: this is amazing work, and I think you should monetize it. I would absolutely buy a print of this.

Please consider hooking this to a Shopify store with a print on-demand plug-in (Gooten comes to mind, but there are a dozen alternatives) and sell them!

leblancfg··on Arranging Invisible Icons in Quadratic Time

This is a takeaway message for me. With some luck I’ll remember that sometime

leblancfg··on Fuzz me wrong – How QuickCheck destroyed my favourite theory
That’s a great article! I have no background in either Haskell or CS but was captivated to read until the end. Great job!

Nit: I think this would read better if the author replaced “personal theory” with “hypothesis”.

leblancfg··on Why cats are crazy for catnip
Sure thing, although I would argue the increased evolutionary fitness would be very small. The fact that they roll in it vs just inhaling it to me also suggests this.

Maybe their use of the word "functional" is different than mine, and we're saying the same thing. But to me there's a big difference from saying e.g. "Our findings suggest that chimps using sticks to dislodge food is a functional behavior."

leblancfg··on Why cats are crazy for catnip
Maybe go watch a cat and report back =)
leblancfg··on Why cats are crazy for catnip
> Our findings suggest instead that rolling is rather a functional behavior.

People smoke weed all the time and it decreases violence. But that’s not why they do it.

Chances are just as good that the insect repellant is just a nice side effect of these cats getting high, not the other way around.

I made that link too - it’s spurious at best though, of course.

Crippling a country’s energy and telecom capabilities could align with the motives of another nation.
