lebean··on I'm an Old Fart and AI Makes Me Sad
I'm sorry to hear that it makes you sad. Maybe it's not empowering for many programmers, but stuff like GPT has inspired many non-programmers to learn programming just to use it. Which is pretty empowering.
lebean··on Magika: AI powered fast and efficient file type identification
It's for researchers, probably.
lebean··on Sora: Creating video from text
Cognitive behavioral therapy works for me.
lebean··on “I'm sorry, Dave. I'm afraid that computation is too carbon intensive”
Have y'all noticed that the same people who insist on paper straws also want us to use compostable plastic utensils? Like come on, pick a lane!
lebean··on Cathie Wood May Have Lost $14B. But She's Interesting
The cult-like devotion to Cathie Wood just blows my mind. Reminds me of Elon diehards, the kinds who think he makes no errors and any ostensible mistake is 4D chess or a clever troll to stick it to the haters. I wonder if these phenomena are related somehow.
lebean··on Ask HN: What are some actual use cases of AI Agents right now?
Don't downplay the value of watching agents talk to each other for amusement. I got a lot of mileage out of that and will continue to do so.
lebean··on Walmart in talks to buy TV maker Vizio for more than $2B
We've come a long way since fighting oil, metal, sugar and meat monopolies and cartels. Now we're worried about Walmart buying TV brands. Really puts the past century into perspective for me.
lebean··on Walmart in talks to buy TV maker Vizio for more than $2B
Walmart buying cheap crappy TV brand is antitrust in a world that has many cheap crappy TV brands? At least the Microsoft and IE thing made some sense, it's not like we're hurting for choice here.
lebean··on Your AI Girlfriend Is a Data-Harvesting Horror Show
My waifu is the word suggestion Markov chain on my phone. Conversation has gotten dry, but we make it work.
lebean··on US Employers Brace for 16M Super Bowl Sick Days
Be safe, everyone! There is a flash-epidemic every year in the US around this time that has us scratching our heads. Thankfully almost everyone survives it with no long-term effects, with hangover-like symptoms being the most severe of the common symptoms. Hopefully we can find the cause of this one day.
lebean··on I applied for a software role at FedEx and was asked to take a personality test
Wow, someone got paid to make that.
lebean··on Tech companies axe 34,000 jobs since start of year in pivot to AI
I feel bad for the illustrators of three-armed, seventeen-fingered mutants, document summarizers, and fact-hallucinating management consultants who've been replaced by AI this year.
lebean··on Anchovy spawning causes temperature swings and turbulence in ocean layers
We can learn a thing or two from these magnificent creatures.
lebean··on Morale plummets at Google as workers complain bosses are 'inept' and 'boring'
Thanks, haven't used GCE in nearly a decade, might give it another shot.
lebean··on TSMC to build second Japan chip factory
A vassal state?
lebean··on Oceans May Have Already Seen 1.7°C of Warming
I mean, you have good heuristics, rereading what I wrote.
lebean··on Oceans May Have Already Seen 1.7°C of Warming
Hi, sorry I've got an effect on some folks. I'm not a climate change denier, and that climate change is real and that we've caused it are things I consider uncontroversial. I've not seen people like that in this thread nor on HN. They were likely flagged in this thread before I've seen it, and I can't see them.

I had the skeptics of imminent climate catastrophes in mind, or in general, folks who don't straight up deny climate change but still question some of the literature. It bothers me that these are lumped in with fringe deniers, and what's with the "deluded optimism" jab anyway? I don't agree with them either but cmon, that I'm sure have rubbed some the wrong way.

lebean··on Oceans May Have Already Seen 1.7°C of Warming
Understanding something often means asking basic questions. This forum has many folks who value questioning like a skeptic, something like a Socratic dialog. Kind of unfair to call people deluded just because you and many others have reached a conclusion long ago.
lebean··on A famous climate scientist is in court, with big stakes for attacks on science
Hard to attribute that to defamation. Not saying there's no causal link, but funding can be fickle and this could happen if climate change science ever becomes unsexy or saturated.
lebean··on How the codpiece flopped
Nice title!
lebean··on Plastic bag bans work
Building a wall of that scale overnight would be quite a feat, almost as impressive as successfully getting people to start using paper straws.
lebean··on Finance worker pays out $25M after video call call with deepfake CFO
Thanks, I needed that.
lebean··on Drug history is a backdoor to cultural history
Using drugs as such isn't a crime, you're hurting nobody but yourself. An addict may steal to feed their habit, but it's their theft that's the crime, not having shot up that morning. It's clear that the act of taking drugs, however hard, is victimless.

The enforcement of laws against victimless crimes attracts bullies to the police force, and that's a huge problem. As bad, if not worse, than the damage done by petty thieves feeding their habit. Because now we have a culture where the drugs are a crime worth breaking into strangers' homes, guns a-blazin', to punish and prosecute. And it's hard to convince the public and the lawmakers to reverse course when the common argument is that people should be able to do drugs if they want to, or that maybe some are ok because they aren't as hard, etc.

lebean··on Finance worker pays out $25M after video call call with deepfake CFO
I do, after reading that
lebean··on Car insurance in America is too cheap
However, the lift is done to compensate for something else.
lebean··on Zuckerberg explained how Meta will crush Google and Microsoft at AI
Article from 2025: Is AGI the next Metaverse?
lebean··on Spotify ordered to reverse layoffs in the Netherlands
Nah, layoffs are good. Less wasted capital.
lebean··on Why Walmart pays its truck drivers 6 figures
There are plenty of <$50k programmers making 6 figures, so I'm not sure that's it.
lebean··on How I got an O-1 visa as a software engineer
The root of that issue is that they can't work. Not legally. For all the complaints anti-immigration people make about immigrants not working, they seem to do everything they can to make it impossible to work here legally, regardless of whether you came here by foot or boat or a sponsorship.

Protectionist policies breed stagnation. Being wholesale anti-immigration in the name of protecting "our jobs" is a cover-up for preferring the comfort of not having to compete with the more skilled, more wanting, and more willing and ambitious.

lebean··on How I got an O-1 visa as a software engineer
I really hope more people can use this loophole as much as possible. The lack of immigrants is lowering the standards of this country, so perhaps if the trend continues, this will no longer be a loophole but a by-the-book exhibition of extraordinary ability.
