leavenotracks··on Surveillance is not safety: A statement on the UK's latest threat to privacy [pdf]
I didn’t mind Starmer but this is finally giving me the leg up onto the anti-Starmer bandwagon.

What a dreadful legacy to leave - a sad attempt to get the biggest possible bang for the smallest possible buck. Also, 3 months? Perhaps that is as long as he expects to be pm.

I like… great idea to start with the output of a SSG and then strip away the things you don’t want
leavenotracks··on Security Envelope Pattern collection – S.E.C.R.E.T
I am delighted that such a thing exists! I’ll never look at letters from the bank in the same way.
leavenotracks··on Why I love FreeBSD
What a delightful letter of appreciation for a project. Reminds us all to appreciate what FOSS gives the world every day and to not take it for granted!
leavenotracks··on Is Librem Mail Down?
That's them - it seems every now and again their set-up goes down, hopefully it's just a blip. I signed up to Librem One ages ago on the basis that I was supporting a company trying to do good things. But they do seem to be getting flakier and flakier with time. Maybe it's time to roll e-mail on my own domain.
leavenotracks··on Is Librem Mail Down?
Librem mail appears to be down since approx 8am GMT. Status site appears to be down, as is the main puri.sm site.
leavenotracks··on Purism Domain Puri.sm Suspended?
e-mail service provided by purism (librem.one) also appears to be down :(

I have to say though apart from the occasional blip, service has been pretty steadfast for the last ~5 years.

leavenotracks··on Ross Anderson has died
Wonderful.

Made more so by the music that has been combined with the recording!

leavenotracks··on Ross Anderson has died
Very sad to learn of his passing. I came across his work after Bruce Schneier posted a link to a pre print of Ross’s Security Engineering tome. His clarity of thought and effortless navigation through this complex landscape has been inspiring.

Also discovered subsequently his fondness for traditional pipe music and that he busked in his younger years.

A great person - may others bear the light that he brought.

leavenotracks··on Show HN: I built a dashboard tracking the number of Threads users
Anyone have a view of the percentage of accounts that are likely to be fakes/bots? Is this even a thing? Or is there some sort of verification on sign-up?
leavenotracks··on Atom was archived today
Mostly Debian at home - thanks for reminding me though - I do use Notepad++ at work. I believe it's available as a snap on Linux. I do enjoy the simplicity of N++.
leavenotracks··on Atom was archived today
Thanks for that will give VS Code a spin
leavenotracks··on Atom was archived today
Brief comment + total noob question here:

I've been using atom for several years now to main a few sites. I have always found it a pleasure to work in, but then admittedly I am probably using a small percentage of the features that it offer.

What does it mean that the project (or any project) is archived? Does it mean that it no longer has maintainers? Should we stop using it because security will worsen due to lack of updates?

If I should stop using it - what should I try instead (apart from Vi / Emacs / VS Code, which are already well represented in the discussion)?

Thanks

Rotating their desktops by 90/180/270 degrees, and watching them trying to fix- priceless.
leavenotracks··on The Personal Security Checklist
Despite its shortcomings, I value the attempt to generate this list and thank the author for it. Moreover, it's on Github so issues and pull-requests can be created, and the list can be improved.

Even though a ot of the advice will be sound for pretty much all-time, unless this kind of list is maintained in this way it would grow very stale very quickly.

leavenotracks··on The Personal Security Checklist
Individual words then are easily crackable.

But, take 3 long dictionary words chained together...easier to remember and more secure than a shorter randomly generated string.

E.g. postcriptaluminumengagement vs kug45l2wx

Or are there also dictionaries that contain combos of words?! (Would be rather a large dictionary).

leavenotracks··on Ask HN: How can I prepare for hard economic times?
Why the arbitrary comparison with (likely) the costliest outlay? I think it is sound to suggest eliminating gym membership, particularly if under-used. Moreover, it's not optional to pay your mortgage if you have one, gym membership is.

+1 yes! this got deep very quickly

Had a look, and it was worth it! Will consider using for sure
leavenotracks··on Ask HN: Why the obsession with note taking?
All the animation in the second link as you scroll down is very swanky, but super-distracting!
leavenotracks··on Ask HN: What is your home networking setup?
See /r/homelab for inspiration (or possibly confusion!)

Author himself points out just how much has changed, in the two decades, in the preface to the latest edition.
leavenotracks··on A search engine that favors text-heavy sites and punishes modern web design
Really impressed with the results I’m seeing so far. In all searches I have done so far, the results are truly lightweight, and haven’t had to click through any modals, subscription pop-ups or any other junk thus far! Will be using more in the days to come.
leavenotracks··on How I Experience Web Today
thank you for that - great list

leavenotracks··on How I Experience Web Today
> …but it's impressive to me just how deep the less-discovered, high quality web really is.

Would that there were a search engine out there that prioritised the indexing of these high quality ‘well behaved’ sites.

leavenotracks··on How I Experience Web Today
Thank you - great tip, and great site! I like that you also mix in articles in, what I presume, is your native Romanian.
leavenotracks··on How I Experience Web Today
So true, so sad.

These days, when even a few hurdles of crap present themselves, I often just leave. I don’t care what the site has to say or sell me.

Whenever I come across a site that just displays content immediately, it fills me with joy. Usually it’s some obscure personal or academic site, but for a moment I feel like I’ve found a gem in the desert and I browse happily for a while…then I promptly add to a list of non-crap-peddling sites. I long for a curated list of such sites.

leavenotracks··on DigitalOcean has the worst reviews I've ever seen
A lot of the reviews are…suspicious to say the least. Have used DO for ~3 years without any major complaints. There was once a small window of time in which a site I host was down for ~20 mins, but apart from that was robust and good value. No reasons to jump ship here.
