learnalist··on Tiny banner ads attached to flies generate buzz at conference [video]
It certainly is an innovative idea.

As with the lady on the mobile, at first it would freak me out watching it fly into my vision if I wasn't aware of "fly by advertisement".

With the wax detaching from the fly, could we then have the ad company or the advertiser fined for littering?

learnalist··on Facebook's Memcached Multiget Hole: More machines = More Capacity
It might be obvious, BUT i know my knowledge doesnt include working with 28 terabtyes of data. Just reading it in the article is daunting!

I wonder what sort of sandbox they have to play on. They also probably lack the ability to Google or stackoverflow the problem.

learnalist··on Big and secret : way to go, AOL - that's the way to do it ;-)
From what little this article gives away, it seems to me like AOL are getting ready to further upset the newspaper industry online.

Employing lots of journalists ( and their communities ) seems a pretty smart move.

I wonder out loud, if communities are behind their favourite journalist, do you think that would make the members of the communities happier about paying for the news content?

I guess it depends on how much you believe communities are important to the journalist and equally how valuable the communities feel the journalists contribution to their daily lives are.

That said, I love reading the news but don't pay too much attention to who writes the news. ( Perhaps I should )

Anyone else got any ideas of what AOL might be upto with their army of journalists?

learnalist··on Terradata ( database ) running on SSD ( 55,000 IOPS )
Im going to have to say your quoting that line a little out of context.

When I first read the article, the time I got to "slow" I was wondering what I had just read. Yet the very next paragraph helps demystify the jargon.

At that point, I realised the writer was playing with the jargon and hype but in a satirical way.

learnalist··on Getting it Wrong: Surprising Tips on How to Learn
Learning by mistakes is a good way to learn im sure of it. But this article on page 1 covers more about learning where you have a teacher who already knows the material, it would be far harder to use this failing technique if you are creating the material to begin with.

Minus the above I can relate to learning by failing.

For those who use the command line in unix. I hardly can ever remember the command if I grabbed it off google. When I attempt, fail, look it up knowing what I am after I always find myself more often than not still with the correct knowledge.

I do feel this knowledge is sort of common knowledge or more like "yes, that is what i would have said if i ever put it in words". Needless to say it is good to read these types of obvious thoughts as it just aids the life learning process.

learnalist··on Ask HN: what's a good pet for the working programmer?
Fits the criteria.

You could use it as an excuse to visit an exotic location to find the perfect pet rock.

( this suggestion made me laugh. Thank you for that )

learnalist··on Does Exercise Boost Immunity?
Not going to touch on the finer points of the atheltisim of the mice. As your right it would clearly alter the results.

But I do have a question.

What is the ratio of 30 minutes of exercise for a mouse compared to a human. As I would be highly surprised if its 1 to 1.

This article reinforces the need to listen to your body and react accordingly.

On a side note for those looking for ideas.

Based on the example in the article...

I would happily volunteer to take a saliva test before running and after. To help build up the data available for the test.

A website to cater for "crowd sourced data" scientific discovery would be an amazing site. ( clearly there would be pitfalls, im just throwing it out there )

learnalist··on Congressman Spends Week on Uninhabited Island in Pacific
At first, i wanted to scream out.

Who cares.

No really your country is up the creek and here you are filling up an article with nothing more than a blow by blow summary of your week alone on an Island. Yet still i read on. Partly that boyish dream of living the crusoe life style.

The time i reached the end. Jealous and day dreaming. It hammered home the fact we mostly choose the life we lead today.

Equally if i had children, i would want them to read this piece. To allow them that moment to dream and let their mind create Vivid imagery. After all how different was this guys desire to yours and mine to convert that vivid idea into something tangible, real and perhaps even profitable ;)

I trust he won't write a book or turn it into a movie!

learnalist··on HN: Review my little Twitter app
The link could also give you the ability to bring your userbase back to your site.

Clearly on the mobile or something, not as important. But bringing them back via the web page. Allows you more options in terms of what to display.

I know you haven't mentioned nor asked. But a potential tier pricing scheme.

1) How many reminders per week / month

2) Maybe allow non paying users the ability to pick 15min blocks, yet allow paying users the freedom to create any.

learnalist··on HN: Review my little Twitter app
Whilst small, direct messaging will not be an issue. But...

"250 total direct messages per day, on any and all devices"

http://help.twitter.com/forums/10711/entries/15364

Im not sure if they will make an exception for you. I too wanted to us dm as a means of communicating, but having a limit of 250 in a day would just be crippling.

Perhaps an argument in your d glu would be to allow for "trigger word or phrase" then an open message would not be as bad.

Another option would be you send a tweet with a link. The page has a password which displays the message for the user.

learnalist··on 21-year-old computer geek makes £1m with online game (Torn)
There is a slight element of sour grapes in the undertone of many of these comments.

"Its just php scripts", "I could knock that up in a weekend".

These are pretty poor arguments.

Not that many of you care but im slightly surprised at some off the negativity.

What exactly is the difference between people paying him 3 quid and neopets, facebook ( the list goes on ) which sells virtual goods.

One side, comments regularly complain about sites with ads.

Here is a guy, who has an income stream on a website which is not purely ad based. Yet half of you guys are ripping it apart as a simple knocked up site.

I wish I could knock a text-based game up in the weekend, yet we all know there is a lot more to building an app ( yes this would be an app in my eyes ).

As rightfully pointed out, he has somehow found a huge userbase. Tapped it and has made something which gives value ( i'm guessing in the form of entertainment and escapism ) to his users, so much so that they come back everyday.

As for his actual site, I read the article and signed up, took me less than 5mins to leave. Thats just me. His site is shocking and thats polite. Yet it works for him very well.

These are my thoughts I accept I might be in the minority here and most of the people who comment on HN own / run websites which have turnovers of more than 100,000 pounds / month.

Commence downgrading of my karma;)

learnalist··on Running Goes Barefoot
I want a pair!

But...

Could this be an example of media hype? What do you mean?

Well, as already mentioned this is not the first time an article has appeared on the HN. Not a bad thing. But lets look a little closer.

Like him or hate him Tim Farris has reviewed these. I used to like reading his blog until I couldn't help feel 90% of his stories were there to push you to buy something ( Lead Gen, no less from another article in the top 30 today ) or left you wondering if he was paid to write that story.

The New York times has ran at least two articles related to these shoes.

Wired has an article and a review.

There is a chance that they are being discovered on the merit for what they may or may not be. I don't live in an english speaking country. Equally I am a huge running fan. I am yet to see any here, not even in boutique shops. ( Oslo Norway ) So I wonder how these amazing shoes are only being discovered in mainstream tech ( type ) sites which are aimed at a particular market.

So I googled it a little. "vibram site:news.bbc.co.uk" - 0

"vibram site:guardian.co.uk" - more than 1.

Interestingly they first hit the guardian end of 2006.

"vibram site:dagbladet.no" - 0 ( main norwegian site )

"vibram site:abc.net.au/news" - 0 ( australian site )

menshealth ( us site ) - 0

menshealth ( australian site ) - 0

Clearly my searches are small subset of places I like to read, yet for me it does hold some validity that this could be "new media marketing".

Would love to hear if any of you agree or disagree and why?

Equally would love to hear how as consumers we can read thru the lines of "hidden marketing" and "real" reviews.

learnalist··on How to Monetize a Web Site: A Real World Tutorial
Minus the fact his ( Wil Schroter ) article is littered with links to his own sites he has made which makes it slightly of a big subliminal ad. Im going to assume a lot of his claims come from these very sites he links to.

Wouldn't it be nice in an ideal world if he and countless others who churn out these types of articles. Backed it up with stats on the incomes etc. I know im asking the world there. But it would help give them credibility and won't leave you or I wondering, is this just copied and pasted or is this something HE has actually done.

Lead Gen:

Anything which doesn't compliment the site is going to irritate. So with that in mind, I would imagine this train of thought will actually help you lead to creating business partnerships with other companies, websites.

learnalist··on [dead]
Could you explain the connection to iPhone's for me.

It takes quite a leap to read this article and be able to mentally link it to iPhones. For me at least.

learnalist··on Will the US handing over to ICANN be only positive?
Thanks for the link.

generic top-level domain = gTLD

As mentioned in the article, I do think one of the major issues with ICANN taking control has been the perceived idea that they will allow for a lot more gTLD.

As startups, the question will be do you buy out all the domains for with that name.

Or will an increase in gTLD create a semi "sorted" order. ( Perhaps categorised is a better word )

ie: I sell cars, I will be buy a domain under ".car".

I want wine, so I will do a google search "red wine site:*.wine".

Not speaking chinese / japanese / arabic myself, what happens when they put forward a desire to have "foreign word" top level domain. How do us none readers of the language search/find or even know they exist.

Clearly, for my own knowledge I need to read more, but if ICANN's "only" funding is from tax of domain names. You would believe they will be less influenced by funders etc. Which ultimately is a good thing, I feel.

learnalist··on Comments: Size Does Matter
Thanks for the link, the section you speak of gave me great insight.
learnalist··on Comments: Size Does Matter
Thanks for your hunch. You have quite an impressive karma score considering your 68days old here.

Thankfully I enjoy this site for more than my karma record.

Does deleting it remove the lost karma?

Is the idea of negatively voting down a comment. ( Other than the obvious ) To encourage the user to delete it?

learnalist··on Comments: Size Does Matter
Thats my first negative score! takes it on the chin

A nice feature would be, "negative points because". So that I can learn from it. I have a sneaky feeling it will be related to my opening line.

Im guessing im probably not the first to ask for that feature.

learnalist··on Comments: Size Does Matter
Firstly, your going to disappoint some poor guy doing research on the size of his penis with your title.

As for the content of your article. Really liked it. Some of the numbers in tables were a little hard to follow at times.

Other than that, I love these sort of articles which can point out some interesting tip bits of information which you otherwise wouldn't find. ( just assumed maybe )

learnalist··on European Union threatens to take iPhone off the market
Its a real shame the czar doesn't make such noise about apples app approval system. Thats what i was hoping the article was about when I clicked on the link.

But equally, microsoft, intel maybe now apple.

The key to threatening these big players is actually forcing them to comply.

Has microsoft yet paid their fines? or is still being zipped back and forth between appeals and lawyers.

learnalist··on Bletchley Park to receive significant funding

learnalist··on The Next Admissions Challenge: Evaluating Online Education
Reading the article and the comments, Its a shame with any advancement in Education, online or off. We cant look to quantify someones learning experience without tests and exams.

* Where is the acknowledgement for?

"self motivated" study

"curiosity"

"learning for life, not just for an exam next week"

With that aside, I think online education should complement or co-exist tightly with face to face education. Best of both worlds. The time my children ( which I dont have ) are old enough to be at school. The tech, internet and daily living is going to be vastly different from when I went to school. Should be interesting assuming we get some great forward thinkers on the job!

learnalist··on Ask HN: Please review my webapp - AwesomeVocab.com
Yes, make my own word lists. Just like you are thinking of making other packages. Maybe I just want to learn capital cities in Europe. Or something equally random.
learnalist··on Ask HN: Please review my webapp - AwesomeVocab.com
* Its very simple. * Animation is wasted on me, this is from somebody who at least writes like he has some experience in the field. http://foolsworkshop.com/reviews/issues the very first issue is "The Flip Fixation Flaw". I have to agree with him, its just not something I want to see. Im here to learn.

* I know its a simple app and all, but would be better if I could make my own.

* I commend you on hiding the interface! I have seen quizlet and many others who overwhelm your screen with more than what you are trying to learn. Im here to learn not be told about the groups latest comment. So once again top work on focusing on whats important.

* Nice to see that the webapp is php and not RoR.

* Contradicting "gursikh" comments, I do think there is a chance to monetise such concepts. But he is right, you do have some competition, but you dont need millions of users. You just need to wow a few thousand. ( I think )

learnalist··on That Which Does Not Kill Me Makes Me Stranger
Thank you for sharing that. An awesome read..
learnalist··on Keep the day job and build it on the side...
Your "monitoring" of a competitor, is made a lot easier today in the "internet world". More so, now that any budding startup reads they need a blog, they need to twitter and they need feedback. They then jump on all the other little startups who are offering these services.

Then you or I or anybody comes along and picks over their history.

Scan over their twitter feeds, pick up bits and pieces. Dig thru their "open to the public" feedback with responses.

All of a sudden, we are in possession of a lot of valuable data. eg. Unhappy customers. People wanting things which they arent able to get. Features you overlooked. Features you thought were good and without building are not so. Potential users to aim your product at. Woe them away ( might not be very ethical )

All this data will aid in the creation and moulding of your own startup. Its a little ironic. Yet at the same time. Its a completely new approach to competition

I note that you havent mentioned your competition or "the idea".

Do you think the competition would take you seriously? Serious enough to start making private ( Closed walled ) around the feedback from their users? Should they?

Its all food for thought.

Bottom line as already mentioned, dont give up! Im sure the internet has space for a few of the "same sort of web application". As I read earlier today, it is all about execution. ( I at least hope it is )

Post the url :)

learnalist··on Lessons from the Adult Entertainment Industry
I like! The little tip bit on the iphone and altering camera angles is pretty damn cool. Imagine that attached to formula 1, Football, cricket, Olympics ( whatever it is ). Its going to make watching things on your mobile device quite interesting!

The porn industry has for a while been the lead in tech, so it was a little saddening to read they are looking to the "music" industry to make more money. Oh dear.

All in all blewis, top article :)

learnalist··on How long does it take to form a habit?
In short: The article is so so, its more thought provoking than instantly insightful.

note ( I voted this up by mistake )

Below is "Thought provoked" response.

This kind of study/statement should be semi straight forward to turn into a web application. Assuming there was a way to have complete faith in the trust mechanism. But im off topic.

Back to the forming of habits. I don't believe even for an olympic athlete going to the gym or doing a rep, set or lap of something is ever without thinking. So its safe to say everyone's view of a habit will be different.

Things which you get feedback from I would say are easy to continue doing. The feedback can be loose jeans, feeling fresher, looking better, not going back to the api.

Would learning to write unix commands be like learning a habit?

What would happen if you mixed up learning a habit and the spaced learning ( SRS ) concept for learning something new? Or could you argue that they are one of the same.

learnalist··on From Nothing To Something. How To Get There.
I believe, the incorporation is a USA thing more than other parts of the world. Again with no credentials im under the impression outside of America it is easier to setup a company and just kick off a web app without an "incorporation".

Maybe a budding lawyer can shed some light on the benefits of incorporating before you have anything truely worth incorporating.

learnalist··on Ask HN: What do you think of my new site?
Cant help feel the name was created by a programmer. Outside of the computer world. Are there examples using "foo"?

The UI looks a little bit copied from elsewhere on the net.

I like the idea of being able to create a quick poll and let it loose. Not sure if there is away to let it loose on the twitterspehre.

Am I correct in thinking you mine ( to a degree ) the realtime statements on twitter to help populate your thoughts or to just sound cool.

A major positive, I like you are trying to make money from the get go. ( Even if it is a little hidden = faq )

As always and most unlikely, would be curious to know if anyone has bitten and has paid to use it. You could benefit from a demo, or a reasons why paying $1 is worth it for a poll. That kinda stuff.
