leandrod··on DOGE's only public ledger is riddled with mistakes
So who and which would be? Given SpaceX, Trump could have chosen worse.
leandrod··on Making database systems usable
Those who do not learn the relational model are bound to flounder. For most use cases, there is no reducible complexity in the relational model.
leandrod··on CrowdStrike global outage to cost US Fortune 500 companies $5.4B
Free just got cheaper.

Yeah, I know using free software isn’t a panacea. Still it would be a step in the right direction, plus I could not refrain from the cheap shot at M$ Windows.

leandrod··on Their bionic eyes are now obsolete and unsupported (2022)
Update: https://spectrum.ieee.org/bionic-eye
leandrod··on Bluesky Is Building the Decentralized Social Media Jack Dorsey Wants
ActivityPub was to be the federal social network, but cancel culture balkanised it.
leandrod··on UTC, Tai, and Unix Time (2001)
Quite offensive its characterisation of Posix, given RMS’ involvement to make GNU viable, as far as memory serves me.
leandrod··on Open Sourcing DOS 4
‘in the spirit of open innovation, we’re releasing the source code to MS-DOS 4’ — I should not be surprised. M$ long ago eviscerated ‘innovate’ out of any meaning whatsoever.
leandrod··on Show HN: I made a new kind of Bible app
Is it compatible with the Crosswire Bible Society Sword library?
leandrod··on Google fires AI researcher Timnit Gebru over critical email
Revolution eats her children. Damore was right.
leandrod··on Sweden: higher Covid-19 death rate while failing to collect on economic gains
This is meaningless. There were no economic gains expected, just avoiding a greater disaster. Given that Swedish economy is fairly integrated with its lockdown neighbours, it would be surprising if there were any economic gains; instead, it is probable its neighbours benefitted from Sweden having avoided lockdown.

Also, the higher death rate is normal and acceptable, in a tradeoff against deaths caused by confinement and the unnecessary prolongation of the epidemic. Herd immunity will arrive earlier, and lockdown-caused deaths will perhaps make Swedes survive more and better.

Now vote me down.

leandrod··on Oracle vs. PostgreSQL – A Comment
RAC and hints are antifeatures.
leandrod··on Oracle vs. PostgreSQL – A Comment
PostgreSQL todo. It’s beautiful.
leandrod··on Oracle vs. PostgreSQL – A Comment
And vendor lock-in with them. With PostgreSQL, one gets freedom to add your own, also free components, and even to substitute another ISO-compliant DBMS.
leandrod··on Oracle vs. PostgreSQL – A Comment
Not at all. Because Oracle does not have multiple databases per instance does not equal a PostgreSQL database to an user in Oracle. On the contrary, it means PostgreSQL is way more flexible, because there we have and databases, and users and schemas as ISO meant it.
leandrod··on [dead]
Greenwald is a criminal. He is paying a former representative in the Brazilian House to give way for his lover; he used a criminal organization to invade several people’s instant messaging accounts, and has been using the messages out of context to try to stop corruption investigations; and he uses his adopted sons as human shields against criticism.
leandrod··on Ask HN: PostgreSQL or MySQL?
Only this is not a way to select a DBMS. PostgreSQL adds important features much faster than competitors, it is free and much leaner and more flexible.
leandrod··on Anyone made the jump from MySQL to PostreSQL? It is worth it?
PostgreSQL underlies at least a plurality of SQL DBMS developments nowadays, specially for scale-out (distributed) projects.
leandrod··on Why did Intel kill off their modem program?
Echoes of Risc & VLIW: i432AX, i80860, i80960, Itanic… Intel killed its good non-x86 products, coincidentally all grown out of itself: DEC Alpha, the StrongARM. SSD quality is a joke. The Register must be having a field day too.

leandrod··on We Can Do Better Than SQL
Object relational? No thanks. Just give me relational.
leandrod··on Underwater Exploring Is Banned in Brazil (1985)
This is beyond ridiculous. I was already 14 in 1985, and coming from a quite politicised family I already read newspapers, both for our momentous point in History at the time, and for the Cold War (glad we won that).

Even if the military government did try to boost our national pride with History that, given what we still know, does necessarily begin with Cabral — previous landings were inconsequential — there is no way they would not be happy to claim a Roman connection.

If there is anything to Marx’s claims, it would be because he was (seen as) a plunderer.

Anyway, the military government finished in March, and then we had a populist, centre-right government who could not care less for History.

leandrod··on Norway Is Walking Away from Billions of Barrels of Oil
Labour party is due to a rude awakening when people realise they did not get to labour…
leandrod··on Vietnam’s Empty Forests
This is socialism for you. People are so poor they resort to illegal breadwinning. It happens in my native Brazil too, even if were are not overtly socialist (but heavily influenced).
leandrod··on Firefox desktop market share now below 9%
Zimbra means MySQL. Run for the hills — or migrate to Archiveopteryx or something.
leandrod··on Show HN: Alan – a low-code application platform
Do that relationally, win the world.
leandrod··on Two French rivers disappear underground in cracks and sinkholes
Sensationalism all the way. At least one of the rivers has seen it already in 1 976 (quite recently as far as Geology and Topography go) and several other rivers in several parts of the world do the same or similar things.

Worst case scenario, the water permanently goes elsewhere, either to an aquifer or to another river or lake. People adapt. End of history.
