ldng··on Extending Rust's Effect System
At one point Rust as to decide if it wants to be a popular and used language to allow the masses actually do stuff. Or be an evergreen experimental language that will stay a niche language or even wither under the weight of impractical theoretically "elegant" constructs.

All those years and I'm still wondering if it is going to be the next C or the next Scala (and die out). It is a real barrier to adoption.

ldng··on America lost the chestnut, its "perfect tree"
And at which point do YOU not realize the speed is the issue ?

Why is it that people that should know better, because they have all the capacities to, are the worst climato-skeptics ?! Unbelievable.

And in between, at the coma, revise seriously your indexing policy and don't hesitate to remove unused and underused index (even on foreign key if you don't need them that much). People too often underestimate the impact of rebuilding and index on large inserts.

And how rewriting of history saved Steve multiple times ?
ldng··on French far-right leader seeks to take advantage of AI debate
You did not look very closely then. The founders list includes : Pierre Bousquet (ex SS division Charlemagne), Emmaneul Allo (judged and condemned nazi collaborator), Léon Gaultier (Waffen-SS) and more (not listing OAS and GUD). All of this is known and documented.

GDPR is the acronym you're looking for ^^ Seriously, it helps a lot gating abuses like that.

Except it's not. Bindings to C libraries are.

Nah, not there yet. Just in the "Blockchain" realm for now ;-)

ldng··on Vicuna: An open-source chatbot impressing GPT-4 with 90% ChatGPT quality
Really starting to be annoyed at misleading use of 'open' and 'open-source' in the "AI" circles. When it's not downright a decoy.
ldng··on GNUstep compatibility with macOS Catalina almost complete
Plenty of funded proprietary closed-source software are plagued with bugs too
ldng··on Autodoc: Toolkit for auto-generating codebase documentation using LLMs
It does not for such an uncertain result.
ldng··on Use TOML for `.env` Files?
Lots of distributions precisely clean swap on boot or shutdown for security reasons. Also, clean a swap that is relatively small is faster than zeroing a full disk.

Your argument does not validate the use of easily recoverable .env file. Recovering a .env file is easier than recovering virtual memory.

ldng··on Use TOML for `.env` Files?
Files are written to disk. In a cloud setup that mean possibly leaking credentials when your disk is re-assigned to another tenant.

Yes, cloud provider are supposed to properly erase hard drive before reassigning. Can you be 100% sure they do though ?

With environment variable in RAM the problem is moot. Committing and/or generating .env in production system is completely missing the point.

YES BUTTONS ! (sorry for low quality post but it's been getting tough to find good hardware with buttons ...)
ldng··on Why Twitter didn’t go down: From a real Twitter SRE
SpaceX is subsidised (and so is Tesla) and automotive industry was already in the process of electrifying. Tesla just put pressure to speed it up. Haven't checked but it would not surprises me if Formula E predated Tesla.
ldng··on Why Twitter didn’t go down: From a real Twitter SRE
Can people stop attributing Space success to Musk when it's Gwynne Shotwell's work (with lots of public subsidies)

Europe/Berlin is NOT an offset, it's the zone. A proper date needs BOTH the offset AND the zone ! How come people don't understand timezone when it's right there, in the etymology of the word !?

Sorry not personal but I find myself explaining that each time the subject comes up at work (and generally to the same people... sigh)

ldng··on Dear JetBrains, Don't mess with your UI
Beautiful on top of productive and utilitarian : yes.

Beautiful instead of productive and utilitarian : absolutely NOT.

ldng··on Using a framework will harm the maintenance of your software
I second the mention that almost everything is replaceable in Django. And as a matter of fact DRF replaces the whole Request / Response handling with its own.
ldng··on Using a framework will harm the maintenance of your software
And of course you regularly check back for bugs and security issues, right?
ldng··on Kitchen Renovation ideas animation using Stable Diffusion [video]
And at the same time ... only variation of conformism ?

Stable Diffusion opens a lot a avenues and yet it is somewhat "restricted" to what it "knows/understands". Put differently, if cars it exposed to is black can it paint them pink ? What about even higher level construct ? It can not innovate can it ? Not yet ?

Anyways, fascinating.

ldng··on Manifest V3, webRequest, and ad blockers
My point is not that they were not struggling. But that they were (and somewhat still are) spending elsewhere in stuff barely related to Firefox and this amplify the problem. A lot of money was spent on project not really relevant that were then shelved/dump.
ldng··on Linux on the laptop works so damn well that it’s boring
The A485 has really terrible support ! To the point I'm wondering if Lenovo didn't do it on purpose ... Very disappointed with mine to this day. Time definitely did not improve support.

Spot on. Gnome is designed for non-existent user. All the while, worse than ignoring, denying actually existing user that have since moved on. Very sad story.
