lcswi··on Ask HN: Do you actually click “Get Started” on landing pages?
Get Started is so nondescript. I usually avoid it.
lcswi··on Drones visit California wildfire, angering firefighters
Selfish %#$&%s. I would fully support the firefighters takings them out of the sky with any means necessary. Jam their communications, throw nets, have an 'attack' drone, anything. Surely there are some laws about obstructing firefighters or other emergency services?
lcswi··on Legends in D3
It depends. Classes can greatly help the understanding of a map. It ia much easier to recognise and identify few classes than it is to interpret a vast continuous scale. But really, it totally depends on your data and intentions.
lcswi··on Ellen Pao: The Trolls Are Winning the Battle for the Internet
That is a post worth bookmarking/screenshotting for future reference. Thank you, well said!
lcswi··on Ellen Pao: The Trolls Are Winning the Battle for the Internet
Have there been instances where this happened out of the blue? If so, I would appreciate some more information on those incedents.
lcswi··on Ellen Pao: The Trolls Are Winning the Battle for the Internet
I totally support that, but the Internet is probably the worst and hardest place to try initiate that change.

Opposed to the real world, wannabe bullies have zero chance of seeing a reaction from their victims if those do not react. Online bullies like there DO lose their interest. Just look at past outrages on reddit to see. People need to despise that these short-term hype shitstorms are not worth reacting to'. Maybe ask PR campaigners how they handle it, there should be decades of research.

I am obviously excluding actual stalkers, sociopaths etc. Those are hard problems but not one you can as easily treat and not a widespread problem.

lcswi··on Ellen Pao: The Trolls Are Winning the Battle for the Internet
It is really easy to define the meaning of terms if you are the easy-to-agree-with side of a conflict. And now you cannot even mention the elephant in the room anymore without being immediately flagged, banned or at least called a women hating privileged white boy.
lcswi··on Ellen Pao: The Trolls Are Winning the Battle for the Internet
Thousands of people? Where did you get that number from? Also, there were (misguided) reasons for people to be upset, which does not justify the racism, but hey, extreme insults are normal if you are very angry (no, not just on the Internet but also outside tech filter bubbles).
lcswi··on The Web’s Cruft Problem
Weird, I constantly see communities rush to give money if a site is in danger because of money. I am not talking about '50 social media experts write lists about memes' sites but websites that came and come to be by intrinsic motivation to create and share. Be it a site about bicycles, simulation games or a plant species no one ever heard of.
lcswi··on We don’t trust drinking fountains anymore, and that’s bad for our health
The fountains might be fed with rain water which is not safe to drink.
lcswi··on Fix Reddit with Bitcoin
You could have a shared blacklist.
lcswi··on Ask HN: Have you ever been contacted to sell your user's information?
I have been contacted about embedding ads which I consider almost as bad on my user's privacy.

lcswi··on Sci-Hub tears down academia's “illegal” copyright paywalls
Tor Browser might work for you to circumvent the censorship.
lcswi··on Bitstamp Incident Report 2-20-15
I wouldn't blame windows, surely libreoffice could.be exploited similarly?
lcswi··on Show HN: Brandsketcher – Free startup name brainstorming service
Some years ago there was a site called NameThis by klustr where people could request names for specific things for money and have users submit suggestions, then voting on them. The winning users would get some nice money. Sadly there was a lot of cheating going on and very bad communication from the company. They went offline after a fairly short time.

I loved it, it was a mixture of puns, wordplay and general creativity. Got my first overseas pay check for it (or was it a filled credit card? It was a bit weird and complicated...). Still remember my winning suggestion and I hope the.company uses it, it was purrfect.

lcswi··on U.S. Chamber of Commerce Works Globally to Fight Antismoking Measures
I wish smoking was simply non existent. People in the stories below in my building and the adjacent one smoke which means I cannot have my windows open unsupervised or overnight unless I want my place to smell terribly (not to mention the possible health issues, minor but still...). Never again will I rent above ground level.

Sorry for the not quite on topic comment but I really had to get that off my chest.

lcswi··on Free, three-month trial of Apple Music now available
How easy or hard is it to rip the music without transcoding? It's legal for me to do so.
lcswi··on A Doom-like engine on the Raspberry Pi – 9800 lines of bare metal assembly
I never questioned that
lcswi··on Cisco Announces Intent to Acquire OpenDNS
What was open about it? I always felt weird with the combination of 'open' in the name and then tracking and advertising heavily.
lcswi··on How Primedice was exploited for $1M in Bitcoin
How do they know that it was the same person?
lcswi··on A Doom-like engine on the Raspberry Pi – 9800 lines of bare metal assembly
I doubt the music was played by the device, most probably it was dubbed in post processing.
lcswi··on A Doom-like engine on the Raspberry Pi – 9800 lines of bare metal assembly
What is gratuitous about what I said?
lcswi··on How Primedice was exploited for $1M in Bitcoin
Yeah, I am playing with switching he for she whenever the gender is unknown or irrelevant. It's weird how weird it is.
lcswi··on A Doom-like engine on the Raspberry Pi – 9800 lines of bare metal assembly
Hm, that's hardly anything like doom. It is more like a very basic raycasting engine from several years before that. Doom in 9800 would be really impressive. This does not seem very special if you ever wrote your own engine like that.
lcswi··on How Primedice was exploited for $1M in Bitcoin
Uh, that post includes some doxxing.

From an observer's view, after fully reading it and seeing how hostile their response is, I can only applaud the player. To me it seems fair game. She exploited a weakness in the game, something that in meatspace is often hailed as genius. In bitcoin online gambling, race conditions are a part of the game that has to be expected to be attacked.

With their doxxing they lost any bit of sympathy I had.

lcswi··on Show HN: Effort to clone unmaintained SourceForge projects to GitHub
Nice! But in my opinion better help archiveteam with their efforts!
lcswi··on Help, I’m Trapped in Facebook’s Absurd Pseudonym Purgatory
It is much easier.to get intelligence on you though (ok, same as if you used Facebook messages). Likes are random and nothing consistent. Your communication with peers can reveal everything though.
lcswi··on Amazon's New Plan to Pay Authors Every Time Someone Turns a Page
The author is paid for pageviews, not quality.

That just exchanging the kettle for the pot. Hell, whatsapp IS owned by Facebook...
