Can't believe they didn't name this Qolor
lbj··on Zed, a collaborative code editor, is now open source
Great alternative for those who can't afford Emacs.
lbj··on Five richest men double their money as poorest get poorer
So people who work all the time increase their worth, while people who don't work actually lose wealth? I'm quite surprised
lbj··on Who makes the most reliable new cars?
BMW beating Mercedes? That'll be the day :D
lbj··on Who makes the most reliable new cars?
BMW
lbj··on Half of Glaciers Vanish with 1.5 Degrees of Warming
I'm sure this is very important and so on and so forth. But we really need to find some way of communicating this stuff more "bite sized". Every few days over the summer scienticians predict that all life in the universe will be violently exterminated if we don't tax meat - and it's probably true, but it's just too loud, and too boring.
lbj··on DevToys – A Swiss army knife for developers
Congratulations on beginning your spiritual journey. 99% of that stuff I handle in a Repl hooked into Clojure using Cider.

Looks like a great tool for those who still aren't using Emacs.
lbj··on Mastering Emacs
In this particular example, I was documenting my investigation into a defect. I was jotting down notes in Org-mode (1. note-taker). Those notes included SQL scripts which evaluate directly in the note-file (2. ejc-sql / replacing dbbeaver), letting the next user see which result I got from the queries and the ability to re-run the queries (C-c C-c). Some of the results returned large jsonb blobs, which were made readable with M-x json-prettify (3. replacing some online json prettifier). The git stuff (branching, making a pull request, updating it) was handled using Magit/forge (replacing git/lazygit). And ofc the code-editing replaces (5) whatever IDE you could otherwise use.
lbj··on Mastering Emacs
It's crazy that here in 2023, Emacs is still the absolute beast when it comes to developer productivity. I had a colleague review one of my workflows the other week and after a minute or so he said "Whoa, I would have been in 5 different tools by now".

If you're not into Emacs, I suggest you give it a whirl. For most development, nothing else will get you close to the joy and productivity that a well configured Emacs can.

lbj··on My Netlify account has been suspended, I don’t know why?
> Never trust a for-profit company

Seems a little dark, considering that's almost every company on the planet.

lbj··on Demoscene accepted as UNESCO cultural heritage in The Netherlands
Funny, to my mind it's much harder to build a beautiful performant demo than keep a website afloat...
lbj··on Generate invoices from the command line
Thats a fun idea, I think I might add a public API endpoint to ZimTik to spit out invoices. Would be a little simpler with a system that already has all customer details and task details.
lbj··on Microsoft in furious attack on UK as major gaming deal blocked
I can definitely see their point. Asking the government to gain and mantain such a deep insight into market dynamics is bound to fail time and time again. Private monopolies never persist for very long, any attempt to fix that non-problem via governmental interference is bound to produce opposite results.
lbj··on Show HN: I made a SQL game to help people learn / challenge their skills
My apologies. My reworked comment is: You've done a great job, I'll give this a full playthrough! :)
lbj··on Show HN: Killport – CLI tool to kill processes running on a specified port
Holy smokes: https://github.com/jkfran/killport/blob/main/src/linux.rs#L8...
lbj··on Show HN: I made a SQL game to help people learn / challenge their skills
You've done an incredible job buddy, so you get my upvote. As a bit of friendly feedback, the game feels like it's moving much too slow. Perhaps allow for a click to finish typing out the task instantly?
lbj··on LastPass user vaults stolen in recent hack
Well.... Unencrypted access to all the sites each username/email has an account with could be very damaging for some individuals.
lbj··on Beyond Functional Programming: The Verse Programming Language [pdf]

lbj··on Ask HN: Which books you have read till now that were worth investing time in?
Atlas Shrugged.
lbj··on Hotel safety tips from a former intelligence officer
Thanks! I'll stick to my selfmade little box. Its easy to open if you know how, but if you don't you get a severe electric burn, that will at minimum make you scream loudly.
lbj··on Hotel safety tips from a former intelligence officer
I would have liked to see the good options when not using the hotel safe.
lbj··on New open source project: Common Lisp 3D graphics system
Bless your heart for still using Common Lisp.
lbj··on Clojure Web Development Evolved [video]
Clojure's webstack has actually made webdevelopment interesting again. Most of the other "innovations" in webdev has added tons of complexity without benefits that match.
lbj··on Ask HN: Is Signal.org using WhatsApp code?
Thank you sir, for putting in the work :)
lbj··on AI Could Defeat All of Us Combined
Great idea, but it will require one planet per partition
lbj··on AI Could Defeat All of Us Combined
Another idea too dangerous to leave unchecked, like Nuclear weapons or Biological warfare. I think most people will agree that a GAI can't be bargained with, tempted, bought or otherwise contained - We will be at its complete mercy regardless of any constraints we might think up.

What I would like to discuss, is how we can get humanity to a point where we can responsibly wield weapons that powerful without risking the glob. What does success look like, how can we get there and how long will it take?

lbj··on IQ scores are falling and have been for decades (2018)
Great to finally have some data. The tendency has been pretty clear for some years now, with more and more crazy ideologies spawning among the young.
