lazzurs··on Enshittification is what happens when a Disney adult learns about captialism
As a Disney Adult that learned about capitalism long before being a Disney Adult I approve of this message. Good work tef.
lazzurs··on UK government surveilling social media of teaching assistants
Low on cash. There’s a difference between not having the cash and just refusing to spend it on education.
lazzurs··on UK government surveilling social media of teaching assistants
Simple FOI request to find out how much the program is costing. I doubt it’s cheap.
lazzurs··on Plans to cut speed limits ‘will significantly improve road safety' – minister
Anyone that thinks this is going to change anything in Ireland has never driven around Ireland. To say speed limits as taken as an amusing suggestion here is the biggest understatement I’m going to make all day.
lazzurs··on Microsoft's ex-VP of HR says you should leave a company if you get put on a PIP
Duh.
lazzurs··on Tell HN: It's 2023 and you still can't import .ics files into iOS Calendar app
I find iOS and AWS share this trait. If you want something done you need Shortcuts or Lambda.

You can do this via a shortcut and that is sadly how I have handled it for years now.

lazzurs··on SRI’s radioactive contamination treatment is now in its first-in-human trial
I can’t help but think that this makes nuclear conflict easier to start.

It’s a great thing but sure makes pushing that button easier if you know you can take a pill and not everyone dies.

lazzurs··on Tell HN: Cancelling HP Instant Ink prevents cartridges from being used
I have an EcoTank and it is great and I would recommend it to anyone but there is a small catch of the maintenance box which is where ink goes when cleaning is being done inside the printer. If you don't print often you are more likely to use the maintenance box.

I have not looked at how easy it would be to clean out, reuse and reset the box but I suspect it is possible.

lazzurs··on Bank of England and Treasury think UK is 'likely' to need digital currency
In shock news consultants advised that spending more money on consultants would be a good idea.
lazzurs··on Ask HN: Matrix as a Corporate Messaging Service?
We currently do in the company I am in. Looking at all the alternatives it was a decent idea. We went for the hosted version and it works well enough for both technical and non-technical staff.

In the hosted version they provide bots for doing the sort of auditing/logging things you are going to need and the support has been excellent.

Overall, better than Teams :)

lazzurs··on Ask HN: Am I wrong to think this is disrespectful?
I think if you can’t both have a conversation about this easily then getting into business together might not be a good idea. Times are going to be tough and you need to not sweat the small stuff together.

If you can sit down and have a chat then all good and do so. Go have fun.

lazzurs··on Show HN: Infracost (YC W21): Cloud Costs for Terraform in VSCode
Been using this for what seems like a year now as part of our review process using Atlantis (https://www.runatlantis.io) and it has been a welcome addition to have a cost report for every change.

We don’t have strict rules around this but it would be easy to add some policy checking to block any change that is surprisingly expensive.

lazzurs··on What will you do after tech?
I've just migrated a mainframe to the cloud. Mainframe still exists for sure, plenty of work there :)
lazzurs··on Ask HN: What’s a good laptop for software development at around $2k?
Apple has started doing this and I can't say I am impressed. When I unplug I expect my laptop to be at 100% not randomly at ~80% based on a guess as to when I might unplug.
lazzurs··on Ask HN: What Happened to Evernote?
I’m a big fan of Joplin

https://joplinapp.org/

The sync works with a bunch of different cloud services and I’ve yet to have a problem with it.

lazzurs··on My Pet Peeves with Terraform
This seems a lot like an advertisement for Opta rather than really pointing out issues with Terraform.
lazzurs··on Bitwarden: Free, open-source password manager
I have to use 1Password for some shared work stuff and I find Bitwarden comparable but I am happier with Bitwarden as it is open source and so central to my personal security.
lazzurs··on Bitwarden: Free, open-source password manager
I've found the multi device syncing easier and the integration with iOS works very well.
lazzurs··on Ask HN: What is your system for backing up family photos and video?
I really like the idea of an annual photo book. Might steal this.
lazzurs··on Ask HN: What is your system for backing up family photos and video?
Nextcloud on ZFS + rsync.net with rclone and crypto.
lazzurs··on The Framework Laptop Is Great for a Linux-Friendly, Upgradeable/Modular Laptop
I know of many people waiting for that before hitting the order button.

If you even offered the different keyboard types right now we can organise our own shipping and tax :)

lazzurs··on The Framework Laptop Is Great for a Linux-Friendly, Upgradeable/Modular Laptop
Nope. Here in Ireland where they have major offices not only is there no Apple retail but they only offer the Aluminium versions of Apple Watch. Currently no providers offer eSIM for Apple Watch but that shouldn’t stop me buying a better screen.
lazzurs··on Ask HN: Do you still miss your RIM BlackBerry?
I miss my Palm Treo devices. If someone could give me a form factor like that with GrapheneOS or iOS I would be willing to pay a lot of money.
lazzurs··on Ask HN: What Apple alternatives are you switching to?
I’ve bought a Google Pixel 4a today to do some testing with Graphene OS.

I already have my data in Nextcloud so that makes the switch easier but some things like WhatsApp are going to be harder and for that it appears the Matrix bridge is the thing.

What ever path I go down my partner is going to follow so it has to just work and take great photos. If the Pixel 4a as a test device works I’m excited about the Pixel 6 Pro.

On the desktop, just got the new Mac Mini and not looking to jump yet but Linux is a decent desktop OS. All I need is Firefox, a Terminal and Jetbrains to get the job done.

lazzurs··on Ask HN: What are you using to replace shared iCloud Photos albums?
I use Nextcloud and it works great. I do self host and with Docker don't find it all that hard with minimal maintenance.

The iOS client is excellent but to be totally transparent sometimes the app does need to be opened to make sure the photo sync happens.

lazzurs··on Apple says photos in iCloud will be checked by child abuse detection system
Proton.

lazzurs··on Ask HN: What do you intend to do about Apple's invasion of your privacy?
Leaving iOS. Buying a Fairphone and crying about the lack of anything like Apple Watch.
lazzurs··on Ask HN: Do you regret having children?
No. I have one and another on the way and hoping for more in the future. It’s never hard. He is just a tiny human with needs and wants all of his own and I do my best to help him get what he needs and learn about the world around him. It’s an amazing thing to watch and his abilities humble me every day.
lazzurs··on Ask HN: How do you stay on top of everything you find interesting on the Web?
Yea I came here to say this. I read things and then close the tab. If it’s important I can go find it via a search later.
lazzurs··on Show HN: Privacy-first home security on mobile with smart alerts
Isn’t this just exactly what Eufy does?
