lazyeye··on Fighting the New York Times' invasion of user privacy
The NYT used to market itself to advertisers with the observation that "our readers have the highest disposable income of any paper in the US".

It gives an interesting insight into politics and the modern Democrat party that the newspaper of the wealthy leans so strongly left. This was even before Trump came to power.

lazyeye··on I may have found a way to spot U.S. at-sea strikes before they're announced
(shrugs) fine believe what you want...
lazyeye··on I may have found a way to spot U.S. at-sea strikes before they're announced
"The connection of these boats to any drugs is dubious..." this is simply ridiculous.

Boats with 3-4 outboards on the back carrying large bails of some unknown "cargo" transiting well-established drug routes is obviously not a "dubious" connection. We also don't know what the intelligence was on the ground which I'm also guessing was quite substantial.

Neither you or I have the faintest clue what information was available behind the targeting decisions. Reality and your desire to frame things to justify your hatred of Trump are two completely different things.

lazyeye··on I may have found a way to spot U.S. at-sea strikes before they're announced
I understand that fentanyl is not coming Venezuala but I dont think what you've stated is the devastating point you think it is. The US is also awash with cocaine (20k overdoses a year is the tip of the iceberg). I note that none of the replies to my parent comment had anything to say about the scourge of drugs across America. I guess 120k deaths a year is a small price to pay if it makes Trump look bad, right?
lazyeye··on Australia has so much solar that it's offering everyone free electricity
Seems like every 2nd post on HN, regardless of the actual content, becomes an argument between advocates for the US and China. In the case of China it's particularly egregious as they get to use US platforms to push their cause, whilst China blocks all foreign foreign access their own platforms. It's tiresome.
lazyeye··on I may have found a way to spot U.S. at-sea strikes before they're announced
Tell me about the 100k fentanyl deaths each year. How does this volume of drugs reach the US?
lazyeye··on I may have found a way to spot U.S. at-sea strikes before they're announced
What a ridiculous take.
lazyeye··on Australia has so much solar that it's offering everyone free electricity
The article was about Australia, not China. Incidentally it was also Australia that invented the modern solar panel.
lazyeye··on BBC 'doctored' Trump speech, internal report reveals
Everybody is forced to pay for the BBC yet they represent the views of only a portion of the population.
lazyeye··on The Coming Clash of Civilizations
The assumption that one side was going "extra-constitutional" whilst the other was always acting in good faith, is ridiculous.
lazyeye··on Mosquitoes discovered in Iceland for the first time
Never understood how mosquitos could survive the sub-zero temperatures of an Alaskan winter for example.
lazyeye··on The Muscular Compassion of "Paper Girl"
I thought this NYTimes article captured the appeal of Trump, free from the sneering condescension you normally see...

lazyeye··on China Has Overtaken America
The original Paul Krugman quote

“The growth of the Internet will slow drastically, as the flaw in ‘Metcalfe’s law’—which states that the number of potential connections in a network is proportional to the square of the number of participants—becomes apparent: most people have nothing to say to each other! By 2005 or so, it will become clear that the Internet’s impact on the economy has been no greater than the fax machine’s.”

lazyeye··on China Has Overtaken America
China has big problems. They are totally trade-dependent (imports and exports) and some of the worst demographics on the planet apparently.

lazyeye··on The weaponization of travel blacklists
I find that naked partisanship is the rule rather than the exception on HN. Papered over with a bit of motivated "logic" but this is mostly just window-dressing.
lazyeye··on Deloitte to refund the Australian government after using AI in $440k report
What cases? Immigration status is not weighted evenly across all races.
lazyeye··on Deloitte to refund the Australian government after using AI in $440k report
I think its based on immigration status which is different from race.
lazyeye··on Mini smartphones from Japan [video]
Of course, these phones are never going to replace a conventional smartphone. They are really only where you care about size, you want to be contactable when out running etc.

The unihertz Jelly is smaller than these phones

https://www.unihertz.com/collections/jelly-series

Then there are some dumb phones which are even smaller. I think the Nokia 3310 is pretty tiny but the 4G version is only available in China.

lazyeye··on US government shuts down after Senate fails to pass last-ditch funding plan
From what I understand the majority of the desired spending is on welfare for illegal immigrants. If true, then it's reasonable to push back against it I think.
lazyeye··on US government shuts down after Senate fails to pass last-ditch funding plan
"There isn't any substantive reason why there ought to be a government shutdown. This is something that has been done routinely, as I said, 13 different times when the Democrats had the majority. But we are not going to be held hostage for over $1 trillion in new spending on a continuing resolution," Senate Majority Leader John Thune, R-S.D., said ahead of the vote.
lazyeye··on Nassim Taleb: The world in which we live
I saw it described as "we suddenly discover a new country with millions of super geniuses who are willing to work 24/7 essentially for free". And III add these super geniuses can be instantly cloned on demand.
lazyeye··on YouTube says it'll bring back creators banned for Covid and election content
That sounds great in theory. In practice, "misinformation" ends up being defined as anything the govt finds inconvenient. Or it is selectively applied so that when misinformation comes from all sides of the political spectrum, only people the govt doesnt like (in the more general sense) get kicked off platforms.
lazyeye··on YouTube says it'll bring back creators banned for Covid and election content
Yep..and fame, admiration, contempt, loathing, indifference etc
lazyeye··on YouTube says it'll bring back creators banned for Covid and election content
What should the punishment be for having opinions the govt disagrees with?
lazyeye··on I Thought I Knew Silicon Valley. I Was Wrong
As is probably the case with alot things, it may not be that Trump is so great, but that the administration before him were so bad when it came to tech policy.
lazyeye··on President Trump Signs Technology Prosperity Deal with United Kingdom
Agreed. Its a great first step with hopefully more to come.
lazyeye··on U.S. already has the critical minerals it needs, according to new analysis
(Shrugs)...people who make every. single. thing. about Trump are just not interesting.
lazyeye··on Korea's major US investment projects halted
"Where is the threat that demands tightening the requirements?.." I've previously given you the answer to this question at least 5 times, if not more. I'II leave it there.
