lazyasciiart··on I would like the value of my home to rise, while my property taxes fall
Most of the problem solved, but does mean that generational wealth transfer stops being a way to climb out of instability. Just another chip in American class mobility.
lazyasciiart··on I would like the value of my home to rise, while my property taxes fall
Property taxes are not that simple, usually. E.g caps on growth of total property tax receipts or on increase per year, rebates, other schemes.
lazyasciiart··on Trump administration is suspending Microsoft from a green card program
“Must be widely distributed in the area the job is located” kinda limits the small towns that can be used. Not to mention the increasing difficulty of finding a small town with a newspaper.

I hope you don’t write your own crypto.
lazyasciiart··on Anthropic reported diary entry to police, woman faces felony charge
What if she mailed it to herself through the post, and her housemate accidentally opened the mail?
lazyasciiart··on Anthropic reported diary entry to police, woman faces felony charge
The article says she made the comments on September 26.

Rings a bell for Netflix’s Stephen Moffat Dracula.

We literally don’t agree on the personhood of humans. Check out the abortion debate.
lazyasciiart··on We're going to need default hard budget caps on pretty much everything
The systems are hopefully created with the help of finance professionals who are familiar with a massive variety of unpredictable cost scenarios.

That’s not storage costs, that’s activity adding to storage used. The question is whether it would be cheap enough for them to keep all your existing data frozen until you paid the bill.
lazyasciiart··on California bans child marriage, a practice still legal in 32 US states
Be more accurate.

No, it wouldn’t. The youngest known girl to give birth was 5 years old. Was she, in your opinion, a child?
lazyasciiart··on Show HN: Lathoa, a math app for kids where the AI is wrong on purpose
This is a category of exercise that is used in Khan Academy and in classroom math, yes.

lazyasciiart··on The last time my family was replaced by technology
Popular belief never took the regulatory obstacles to self-driving cars seriously. If LLMs required insurance to use, they also wouldn't be available in public yet.
lazyasciiart··on The systems that no one will test
> I've had portugal disclose property taxation information on any subject to me, through a simple enumeration hole.

I suspect very few people have had this experience, yes.

> They have been convinced for years (GPT-2 was released in Feb 2019) that AI is dangerous. A tremendous threat. An apocalyptic threat.

Much longer than that. Sam Altman said it was an extinction threat before he started Open AI in 2015. It's so dangerous that only he, as the best and greatest examples of humanity, was a good choice to create it, and it was even his responsibility to create it to pre-empt some worse person! A fascinating new variation on the White Mans Burden paradigm.

lazyasciiart··on Does Reddit have an astroturfing problem? What the data suggests
Maybe they weren't before they IPO'd.
lazyasciiart··on Does Reddit have an astroturfing problem? What the data suggests
Doesn't even have to be bots. Just dumb humans who see a sub name like 'fostering' and don't bother to read far enough to see 'CHILDREN' so they post about giving away a dog.
lazyasciiart··on Does Reddit have an astroturfing problem? What the data suggests
They didn't even say they reply to anything. Perhaps they use it entirely to post local news stories.
lazyasciiart··on Pacing the Frontier is not the actual goal for AI labs
Weird, IMO the problem with that analogy is that I can't picture being confused by a smoker who knows it's bad for them and is continually about to quit. It is definitely not that smoking is "effectively only detrimental", since we have very empirically established that it has a measurable immediate benefit to the people who do it.
lazyasciiart··on Pacing the Frontier is not the actual goal for AI labs
And you also have to believe that despite all of them publicly knowing this stuff for over a decade, they have only just twigged to it.

> I think a lot of the commenters are conflating stock options with actual shares themselves

I think the author caused that misunderstanding by talking about the value of the shares and not the payment he could have made to exercise his options.

lazyasciiart··on There is more to code review than (automatable) detection
Ok, so you ignore PRs and don’t catch people who made architectural mistakes until what, they go to production?
lazyasciiart··on Was silent reading unusual during Augustine's time?
My dad told me this (“people used to always read aloud”) as a kid and I didn’t believe him, I thought he was making some kind of joke. It feels like the same kind of discovery as “some people don’t see pictures in their head”.
lazyasciiart··on Owed a billion dollars in Nvidia stock
No. Owner did not exercise all of the options he was entitled to because he relied on a miscalculated value in a letter reminding him he could exercise them. So he should have paid them and he’s arguing it’s their fault he didn’t remember the other options.
lazyasciiart··on Owed a billion dollars in Nvidia stock
Half of HN, it sounds like.

> At best: you actually win money. At worst: you don't

No, at worst the court orders you to pay for the time spent by lawyers working for the company you sued. This option exists to nudge that calculation “it’s a million to one chance, but it might just work” away from filing lawsuits just for the hell of it.

lazyasciiart··on Owed a billion dollars in Nvidia stock
The value in 1996 when he could have exercised these options was probably $0 since Nvidia hadn’t gone public and was at risk of going bankrupt.

It’s the other way round. For 30 years he has happily believed that he received 16k shares. Now he learns that he was owed another 7k at the time but neither party in the transaction noticed and he wants them to pay the difference now.
