Which is none of them, right? So this is a lie?
lawnchair_larry··on Greenwald: The Leading Activists for Online Censorship Are Corporate Journalists
He didn’t work for any of those outlets. He quit the company he founded, the intercept, who was indeed censoring.
lawnchair_larry··on Greenwald: The Leading Activists for Online Censorship Are Corporate Journalists
This has no basis whatsoever, and he is doing no such thing. Feel free to provide any examples of that.

Disagreeing isn’t a good excuse to smear someone.

Which TV can access the network via a roku?
lawnchair_larry··on San Francisco DA Chesa Boudin recall campaign approved
1. It doesn’t say that, many categories are up.

2. It’s a pandemic with much of the last 9 months in lockdown.

3. The numbers in certain categories are much higher than reported because most people have given up and don’t bother reporting

Yes we are sure. They campaigned on it and are very open about it. Nothing sensationalist about it. It’s underpublicized in my opinion.

You’re very misinformed on the situation. Like many cities across the country, special interests successfully ran an unqualified activist DA who fires all of the prosecutors and refuses to charge criminals. And they’re all paying the price as crime goes to shit.
lawnchair_larry··on Four times I felt discriminated against for being a female developer
This is an absurd analogy that doesn’t map to the situation at all. What you’re actually saying is that if a white person cheated at football before you were even alive, all white people playing today should get a yardage penalty.

What is selfish is you punishing someone else with the same skin color, and then upholding literal racism as a virtue.

They absolutely should lose their shit over that.

Honestly it’s becoming unbearable.
lawnchair_larry··on AI ethics research conference suspends Google sponsorship
Can you find any examples of HN comments that have suggested Black people are too low IQ on average and will be disruptive? I really doubt such a thing exists.
lawnchair_larry··on Far-right misinformation gets by far the most engagement on Facebook, study says
The links to an article that links to another article that links to a medium post. Better source: https://medium.com/cybersecurity-for-democracy/far-right-new...

Considering the clear bias of the authors, their findings are not surprising, and I suspect that folks on the right would disagree with their classifications. Classifying "misinformation" in a non-partisan way is not a straightforward task at all.

They also seem to be grouping things by source, not by article. They appear to decide something is a "misinformation source", and then count everything coming from that outlet as misinformation.

lawnchair_larry··on M1 MacBook Air hits 900 GFlops in the browser with Safari's experimental WebGPU
It's definitely not FUD, but it's probably a bug. I'm surprised at how many people are in complete denial that this could be happening and are assuming that people aren't understanding the tooling or something, instead of the obvious explanation, that it's actually an issue.

Those sites, other than maybe Parler, aren’t anything to do with conservatism. 4chan...really? I don’t think there is a less conservative site on the whole internet. Half of it is anime/hentai and “anything goes” porn, including of the LGBTQ variety.

Brian Acton and Jan Koum weren’t exceptions either. WhatsApp had some hilariously bad vulnerabilities. Like no authentication on their APIs and trusting the client.

You could not be more wrong. You ought to be more humble, however.

Yeah, I beat this dead horse every time the armchair security quarterbacks climb on their high horse in these comments. These “dumb” mistakes happen to everyone, at every company. Even security experts. Even one of tptacek’s companies had a well known incident, and people said all the same things about their “dumb” mistakes.

Companies are very porous, people take shortcuts, temporary workarounds get forgotten and left in place, etc.

You can tell who actually has real experience by who is saying this and getting downvoted for it, ironically. All of the downvoted comments in this thread are correct.

No, it really isn’t. The price only exists because of the MLS cartel, which is finally starting to crack.
lawnchair_larry··on NYTimes Peru N-Word: My side of the story, in four parts
Nobody getting caught up in this is an aspie, that’s gaslighting. Everyone is having these “is everyone else crazy or is it me?” moments lately because of how absurd these woke kids have become, and because people enable this bad behavior.

You don’t suddenly acquire aspergers in your 40s or 50s when your same behavior caused no issue whatsoever just 5 years ago.

lawnchair_larry··on NYTimes Peru N-Word: My side of the story, in four parts
I don’t think you read my comment. The NY Times is still using it in print in the same context. This was virtue signaling and fascism. A debate involves engaging with another party in good faith, not conspiring to get them fired before a conversation even happens. That is a cheap way to avoid the actual debate.
lawnchair_larry··on NYTimes Peru N-Word: My side of the story, in four parts
The only thing that is disingenuous is this argument. It has nothing to do with arrogance and everything to do with virtue signaling and fascism. Telling people how they should feel and unwillingness to listen to opposing views goes both ways.

The easy way to tell that it’s disingenuous? Search this on Google:

site:nytimes.com "nigger"

Appearing in print in his same publication as recently as 2018, 2019, and even December of 2020. So it was fine to print in appropriate context before he said it, and after he said it, but that particular week it was racist and unforgivable. Pretty clear what’s really going on here.

lawnchair_larry··on NYTimes Peru N-Word: My side of the story, in four parts
I don’t understand what’s wrong with the quoted passage. How can that be interpreted in any way that is even the least bit offensive?
lawnchair_larry··on NYTimes Peru N-Word: My side of the story, in four parts
This is, frankly, paranoid delusional madness. These are not “red flags”. How do you expect to function in this world when you are that afraid of someone communicating basic information in a completely non-threatening way? Have you considered that maybe it’s you who has some things to work on, rather than the other person?
lawnchair_larry··on NYTimes Peru N-Word: My side of the story, in four parts
Never do this. They’re playing petty fascist power games and it should not be tolerated.
lawnchair_larry··on NYTimes Peru N-Word: My side of the story, in four parts
It was due to this:

A student asked me: “Do you think one of my classmates should have been suspended for using the N-word in a video from two years ago?”

I said: “Well, wait — what exactly happened on this video? Did she actually call someone “nigger”? Or was she just using it in passing, like quoting the title of a book?”

Because when he asked for context around how the person said “nigger”, he didn’t self-censor when making reference to the word.

That’s it.

That’s how bad this juvenile cancel culture mob has become. They let some 15 year old activist wannabe complain to the paper and get him fired.

No, they were not. Did you look at their financials? Maybe you should see how much this was very much not the case before saying more on the topic.

As a 501(c)(12), they provided services at cost to all “customers” (members), as legally required.
