lawdawg··on Windows 8 productivity: Who moved my cheese? Oh, there it is.
When I see this image from the article:

http://www.hanselman.com/blog/content/binary/Windows-Live-Wr...

I have to ask myself, how can anyone think this: 1. Looks good. 2. Is ideal usage of screen real estate.

And even this:

http://www.hanselman.com/blog/content/binary/Windows-Live-Wr...

Now you have a bunch of icons without text labels, how do you know what does what? Obviously the 3rd party apps are clear if you use them, but the main Windows apps aren't clear. For example, what is that purple icon next to the blue clouds? (And what are the blue clouds? Weather? or is the Sun weather?)

lawdawg··on Apple Wins Patent Ruling As Jury Finds Samsung Infringes
and all those phones have pinch to zoom. Just because Microsoft and Apple are colluding to avoid suing each other doesn't mean that an OS like WP is somehow the solution.
lawdawg··on The Cheapest Generation
I dunno man, stuff like this:

Makes me think its just a matter of the younger generation not having the money to buy a car. They spend it all on smaller, indulgent purchases and fail at saving.

lawdawg··on The innovations of Internet Explorer
I have one word for you, chromium. Feel free to build your own browser using Chromium as the base if you are worried about Google. You don't even have to market it, just use it for your own personal enjoyment!
lawdawg··on Twitter cuts off “find friends” access to Tumblr
Sounds about right, and similar to what happened between Google's real-time search and Twitter. Guess no one should be surprised about this happening if work with Twitter ...
lawdawg··on Gmail in personal search results
considering the gmail results are hidden and require clicking on a link to show them, its not much different than opening up your friends email now is it?
lawdawg··on Google Fiber Plans & Pricing
The $120/mo plan is incredible for what you get, considering 1TB on Google Drive is normally $50/mo. So jealous ...

So your basis for "marketing share growing" is a Comscore report based on a survey in the United States? The only way you would know how many WP are sold is you work on certain parts of WP at Microsoft. I know someone who does, and, although no specific numbers were given, he gives off the impression that WP growth has not been good, and that the Lumia launch was, to put it nicely, disappointing.

And the inevitable "<insert mobile platform here> sucks" mantra comes from fanboys from every platform, including WP. Care to explain why that FUD hasn't influenced the growth of iOS and Android?

lawdawg··on [dead]
Globally, WP isn't large enough yet to register on Statcounters global metrics, but:

* In NA, 1.0% to 0.97% drop from May to June: http://gs.statcounter.com/#mobile_os-na-monthly-201106-20120...

* In Europe, 1.23% to 1.36% rise from May to June: http://gs.statcounter.com/#mobile_os-eu-monthly-201106-20120...

Stats from Netmarketstats shows a much larger global decline, so I think we can conclude that WP is barely growing it's overall marketshare. I expect the WP8 announcement (rather, the WP7.8 announcement) will lead to reduced sales until WP8 is released (hopefully) later this year.

As for Android/iOS fanboy FUD, what exactly would you be referring to?

lawdawg··on Jean-Louis Gassée: Nokia should fire Elop and the board should go too
My interpretation as to why they went with Windows Phone:

1. The $$$, it's hard to turn down more than $1 billion dollars in a year (and probably more per device sold). Just makes the stupid gamble harder to turn down. 2. Nokia can still go with Android at anytime (and maybe they will once their exclusivity contract ends with Microsoft).

lawdawg··on Google I/O 2012
I get both an IM on Google Talk and notification on my phone ...
lawdawg··on iOS 6 unveiled with Siri enhancements and Facebook integration
Just saw this:

"Flyover and turn-by-turn navigation will be available only on iPhone 4S and iPad 2 or later"

Pretty disappointing.

lawdawg··on I put my family business on Facebook. Here’s what happened.
Actually, I find it somewhat concerning that advertisers can see the exact profile page of those clicking on their ads. Sounds like a recipe for disaster.
lawdawg··on Steve Ballmer's Microsoft
A couple of things:

1. The "marketshare" that is referenced by Kantar is new sales marketshare, not overall marketshare. Its an important difference to point out.

2. Even with these gains in WP, iOS and Android are seeing similar absolute gains (e.g. in the 2-3% absolute marketshare growth). All WP is currently doing is taking a small piece of the symbian/BB pie

3. Given Microsoft's track record, the problem with WP is how long it takes for them to release a new product. Mango was what WP should have been initially, yet took a year to release. By the time WP8 is out, we will be looking at iOS6 and the Android version AFTER Jelly Bean.

Overall, I believe WP will not go away, but will stabilize at around 5-6% overall marketshare. The problem then is that given Microsofts development costs, they will continue to lose money. (Just look at Bing vs Google and even with 30% of US search shared, Bing loses billions of dollars a year)

lawdawg··on Steve Ballmer's Microsoft
I think people are also conveniently forgetting that the first Windows Mobile reboot was ACTUALLY the Kin. Its funny to look back at it now, but the Kin cost Microsoft 2 years as well as a ton of talented engineers.

Just imagine what things would be like if WP7 was released when the Kin was ... it probably would have been even earlier than that if they had focused all of their effort on WP instead of fragmenting the company (and causing a ton of internal strife) between the Kin and WP. We would be looking at a much different situation right now.

lawdawg··on Jury in Oracle v. Google has reached a verdict on all questions but one
you obviously didn't follow along during jury selection. Anyone with any software/engineering background was excused from the jury. The current jury has no technical knowledge whatsoever.
lawdawg··on Jury in Oracle v. Google has reached a verdict on all questions but one
apparently it is not question #4, which leads to a few possibilities:

1. Unanimous on question 1, and therefore question 4 as well.

2. question 1 is the one they are still debating, and therefore haven't even considered #4.

Regardless, I don't think you can say whether this is good or bad for Google/Oracle either way. Yes, if they were stuck on #4, it would be bad for Oracle, but I can see them already deciding Yes to #1 and No to #4, and can't decide on #2 or #3.

lawdawg··on Google Drive detailed: 5 GB of free space, launching next week
which free service (or service that pays you money, ala AdSense) has a better approach to customer service? Honestly curious because I hear a lot of complaints about Google, but I have a feeling that Facebook, Bing/Microsoft, etc aren't any better.
lawdawg··on Google (as a company) is more popular than Facebook, Twitter, and even Apple
More confirmation that what tech bloggers and the valley elite think is far removed from what the average consumer thinks.

Except Facebook, everyone hates facebook.

lawdawg··on Windows Phone 8 Apollo detailed, will have Windows 8 integration
Probably because WP7/7.5 phones will not be upgraded to WP8. Why waste money marketing a device that will effectively "go away" this October when WP8 is released? Microsoft has already decided to invest heavily in WP so it makes much more sense to save their marketing dollars until their long term/future OS has been finished.

For those that are unaware, WP7 and WP8 are built off of different kernels.

lawdawg··on Google responds to Microsoft FUD regarding privacy policy
i agree with not feeding the troll, but its a good opportunity to make other clear statement regarding the privacy policy and the tools available to control your data on Google. The latter is really helpful to the consumer so they understand what is available to them, so the more they say it, the better (even if it is as a response to a troll).
lawdawg··on Why I Hate Android

what a clown.

lawdawg··on Why I Hate Android
it amazes me that anyone listens or cares what MG has to say. His posts are full of factual inaccuracies and personal opinions stated as fact.
