laurent92··on MasterCard suspends all services in Russia
Note that cutting the gas aligns with what the West citizen broadly want: Being forced faster than later to get rid of fossil energy. EU leaders certainly didn’t aim to secure the gas supply, they put all their might into sanctioning Russia “even if it costs the gas supply”.

At this point I’m wondering whether Russia knows it and wants to impose any sanction except cutting the gas.

laurent92··on The Rise of Sanctions as a Tool of Modern War
I agree, but I’m surprised that GP said that people in the West have lower IQ because pollution is vastly superior. If proven, it would help me choose a country to emigrate, but I recall dodgy plastics in Indonesia and smog in China, and I’m quite sure the less-tertiary countries have more pollutants.
laurent92··on The Rise of Sanctions as a Tool of Modern War
Did you say the West had pollution? Isn’t it China? Do you say USA and Europe have higher pollution?
laurent92··on Ask HN: How can we fix Wikipedia?
I was ashamed when I learnt Wikipedia artificially funds the writing of pages of women, so they try to reach equal numbers to men. I wouldn’t be ashamed if the criteria for admissibility were equal, but barely being a researcher with published papers is enough, while men with entire books on the subject get rejected.

Talk about rewriting history…

> At which point there would be an opportunity for a clean reset in relations.

No. All major industries are breaking up contracts with the Russians. SWIFT took a century to build. None of that is coming back. Russia can never trust Europe again, and no country can trust Cloud products anymore, seeing how many Russian people are getting HTTP 410 from Cloud products.

laurent92··on Last Day of IKEA in Moscow
I don’t believe the situation is temporary. All major industries are cutting ties with Russia. SWIFT took 100 years to create, even if we allow it back, Russia won’t trust us, ever.

It looks to me like our European leaders are escalating in a specific way that ensures we are locked in a feud with Russia for decades to come, in such a way that we can’t renew relationships even if Putin dies and if they pay war damages (which they won’t be able to pay because of their damaged economy - Ow, sweet irony of 1928…).

I wonder whether we, European people, have an interest into making a 50-years war with Russia, like our leaders are deciding.

Or, in other words, where can I emigrate, from France.

laurent92··on BBC resurrects shortwave broadcasts as Russia blocks news of Ukraine invasion
Note that Europe also bans media they don’t like, namely RT News and Sputnik, along with severe guidance on content with regular threats of fines or deplatforming, coming from governments such as CSA in France. Censorship has absolutely a role in democracy.
laurent92··on Class Bullshitters
Also, people discriminate so much on class that it may not be an advantage to be of a higher class.

I can’t count the ways people invent criteria, such as “street cred”, to prefer some people upon others. “Humble”, “son of worker”, “comes from the hood” are other criteria people use to justify unfairness. Ironically, streed cred is so cheatable that the only ones we let down are the actual middle classes with strong sense of work, because they pass as supposedly rich. The middle and higher classes end up with heaps of resentment which harms society (I remember events such as a girl telling me “I ruined your reputation at school but I was wrong, you were the good guy. Oh sorry for your high school btw.”)

Class warfare is no good thing.

laurent92··on Class Bullshitters
For me, this is not luck, your parents worked hard from generation to generation instead of watching sports. This desire to tinker also comes from a thrive to provide something of value to society, it’s an inner stress that they had all their life, “How do I discover or make something to embed myself into a society where I can’t compete on connections or assets.”

I understand it is no pleasure for you and you have no wish to embrace the devil. But in the absence of a helping hand, lonely people rehearse the worst of their history. You can be the one who lends an ear. What would have helped me would have been someone who analyzes the docs with me, to balance what is true from what is not, and who acknowledges the true parts.

Here’s my side. I’m seen as Quanon in my former groups of friends despite not being it. The last drop with one is when one died of cancer, and no-one went to see him. He was leftist, of a leftist family with left-to-extreme-left friends from generation to generation, with supposedly human values top to bottom; and if not for me, he would have died almost alone, we wouldn’t have found the “point on the visual keyboard” trick to communicate, he wouldn’t have had the wifi or tv for his last 6 months, etc. I was there the last night, totally randomly (well, I was there 3 times a week) playing him his last song, one he had written with me, and I hadn’t realized the commie died the most beautiful death, going to sleep on his own song, surrounded with his friends. And this guy is not the only example. My daughter has been raped (France, by a migrant of 2nd generation, by the ethnicity everyone is racist about), my cousin killed, they regularly kill gays on the central place of my city, they drag girls for 800m until their bowels are spread on the road, and judges release them every single time: I am right to believe what I believe. At the time I had helped in a lot of charities, I’ve donated 3-5% of my revenue, but my observation is that leftists will hate us no matter what we do to help the poor, and even if I were “part of them” (the progressists), they would have left me die alone like they did for their friend. I’ve left every single group who had these traits, so I’ve left all of them, and my friends are now Quanon-type.

You see, from the right, the center-left seem like atrocious people. But I’m genuinely sure you didn’t intend to. I’m sure it’s just ignorance on your side, and I know you say the same thing about me ;) We had the same values at the core, and life just slapped us in different ways. Maybe your mother didn’t actually tell you her history, and/or maybe she needs a punching ball for all she failed at life.

It’s hard, really hard to accept being someone’s punching ball. The rational decision would be to refuse, and you’d be right 100% of the times.

Or, if you think that diversity is strength, you could get acquainted to her, and maintain the speech despite hating the contents, and accompany her for her last years.

I’m not saying I would do it.

If you caricature what I’m saying, you could even interview your mother in order to write her biography. You may throw it away if it’s bad, and/or some key events may surface.

Again, I’m not saying I would do it.

They might be happy that their carbon independence finally becomes a thing and that their doomsday finally reifies. Worsening the sanctions until Russia cuts the gas is exactly aligned with their view of the world, and the worst thing that would happen would be peace.

Lack of social connections make people more …pronounced. Especially in a world where there are actual rivalries, it’s not unreasonable to be angry, and she won’t change, but will be more appeased the more connection she has. As long as you can avoid it being completely toxic for you, which is much harder.

Besides, GMaps could require login for Ukraine, and only be allowed for people with a track record of being in Ukraine. Since Google follows you everywhere.

> response of the european leaders so far

Sorry I’m un-knowledgeable, but what do you say to the following, well-known argument?

“What would USA say if Russia installed missiles in Cuba? / What did Russia say when OTAN envisioned including Ukraine and thus installing missiles there? / Therefore, isn’t the solution to simply abide by the 1991’s USA promise of not taking foothold in the states bordering Russia?” ? I’m unable to judge this idea with my knowledge.

laurent92··on What’s the appeal of deep voices in men?
It’s also very American, and more broadly related to the English language. French people speak with a more similar voice between men and women; US people, to me, seem to accentuate their deep voice to borderline ridiculousness when their voice saturates “a la Barry White”. The only conclusion I could make was that it gives authority in this culture.

If you are afraid of the lack of rule of law, there are not many countries we need to avoid. Japan has a 99.995% of inculpation after their police interview. And that has to do with the fact that their interview can lawfully last for 22 days, renewable. You can’t even avoid USA: 95% of jailmates are there upon self-admission of guilt without external proof, ie. without objective proof besides self-incrimination.

Interesting because, between easy-and-wrong and hard-but-perfect, there is the solution of subtracting the size of each country from their distance.
laurent92··on Ask HN: What made your business take off that you wish you'd done much earlier?
I’m French and ahem, I’m selling to both US, Australian and Russian government entities. As in, .gov email addresses.

When I fill in forms, it’s often quite simple since we’re all French developers under regular employment contracts.

laurent92··on Ask HN: What made your business take off that you wish you'd done much earlier?

laurent92··on A database of broken things to identify common failure modes and how to fix them
In fact, it’s a good example of how design solves something. An upfront photo does a much better job than showing you a searchbox (after all, it’s a database so it should start with a search box, shouldn’t it?) and letting you discover that there are no stacktraces in this workshop.
