lathiat··on European crash tester says carmakers must bring back physical controls
There’s definitely a different feel to the electric motor driven assist. Though there are just many different implementations probably the specific one you had was particularly quirky.

Relatedly I had a Hyundai i30 for a while which has a well known fault where the plastic gear connection (called a Spyder Bush) from the electric motor to the steering column would break. Resulting in slop and a clunk. Not hard to imagine similar failures or bad design.

lathiat··on European crash tester says carmakers must bring back physical controls
What car do you have without power steering? Or, are you referring to electric as opposed to hydraulic power steering? I haven't seen a car without power steering since the early 00s (which was a 90s car).

The steering deadzone is not purely a function of power steering. Some of it is design or could be attributed to that, but a bunch of it also comes from slop in the physical connections in the steering column, as well as the suspension bushings, your tyre profile, etc.

lathiat··on Git Worktrees and GitButler
I do that to but for the many stable branches of OpenStack/Ceph/etc that I’m working on at once (working on the distro/backporting side often back porting patches 3-8 releases). It’s great.

lathiat··on Ask HN: Slow thinkers, how do you compensate for your lack of quick-wittedness?
I was referring to the part where he starts out with you know you can please some of the people, some of the time. You’re right though he has a solid pause as well.
lathiat··on Ask HN: Slow thinkers, how do you compensate for your lack of quick-wittedness?
"buys you about 5 seconds of time to think."

Steve Jobs had that mastered, like in this clip: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oeqPrUmVz-o

It’s just the cellular version of a wifi captive portal: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Captive_portal

Simple version is the network router firewalls traffic to anything except the ad server, and the ad server will have a trigger to change the firewall. There are some technical nuances to how you handle DNS and also redirecting from other web pages (if desired) without breaking things. But that’s the gist of it.

lathiat··on I turned my ThinkPad into a programmable USB device
I was looking into similar recently just wanting to do 10Gbps between two USB-C machines over USB with just a USB-C cable. Unfortunately most Ryzen boards still don't have Thunderbolt (which supports this natively and easily). And "dual role" USB controllers were quite uncommon (or as this article details, possible but not supported) until USB 3.2/4.0 - and even then it seems a bit hit and miss. It's totally crazy to me it's not easier to network two machines with a USB-C cable (without Thunderbolt).

I also love the part about the lock bit being cleared after a suspend, that seems to be such a common issue.. super common way to get SATA devices out of the state preventing secure erase for example.

lathiat··on Star Trek: Borg – Remastered
I'm not sure its truly getting hugged to death.. these video assets are pretty large. They are 1440p and 282MB for 5 mins, e.g: https://borgremastered.com/assets/vids/001c_pass_1440p.mp4
lathiat··on Star Trek: Borg – Remastered
While true, Star Trek does have some history of tolerating fan productions to a certain extent. This probably wouldn't qualify but they tolerate more than average.

lathiat··on VirtualBox KVM Public Release
Yeah this has always been a bit of a pain. Since LXD recently launched a web interface that includes graphical console support (plus VM support some time before that, it's not just a container host anymore, it can do both), I have been using that for remote VMs now. But it still has quite a few rough edges, but nicer than libvirt at least.
lathiat··on Pete Buttigieg Viral Tesla Truck Driver with Apple Vision Pro
You’re assuming the tracking is all visual but it’s not. Uses vision combined with accelerometer, gyro, etc. Which are affected by vehicle movements.

Travel mode apparently switches it to track primarily with vision. So it can work as you say.

lathiat··on Pete Buttigieg Viral Tesla Truck Driver with Apple Vision Pro
Travel mode (designed for airplanes) fixes that. Which Casey didn’t try.
lathiat··on Snap is recalling and refunding every drone it ever sold
It may or may not be a requirement of the recall program to actually get the product back, whether or not it makes sense in the context of then not being possible to ship a possibly dangerous battery via any normal shipping method.

lathiat··on Netflix is turning into cable TV
I feel like mainstream TV wasn't much better at that. The vast majority of TV shows I got into seemed to get cancelled after 1-2 seasons.

While they seem to have a bad track record by public opinion, it's unclear how much worse Netflix was at this.

I did a quick google to see if I could find any statistics, I got bored looking for some better data but did find this article claiming that from 2009-2012 "on average, 65% of new network television series will be canceled within their first season.": https://screenrant.com/tv-success-rate-canceled-shows/

lathiat··on Ask HN: Why aren't there more hearing aid startups?
It could. Apple AirPods actually support this (using a real "Audiogram") but annoyingly they currently "average" your two ears and don't apply an ear-specific correction. Which for someone like me with perfect hearing on one side and supposedly "Mild" but realistically quite significant hearing loss on the other side is a real pain.

There are already quite a few products in this space: Bose HearPhones Nuheara .. and many more.

lathiat··on High-speed 10Gbps full-mesh network based on USB4 for just $47.98
I recently wanted to do this and was surprised to learn that USB3 did not have a point-to-point mode like thunderbolt - some controllers had "dual mode" ability but the vast majority don't. I was doing this on Macs with thunderbolts 10 years ago but still couldn't do it on a PC today.

Despite being great in most ways, AMD desktop systems in general rarely have thunderbolt (unlike Intel) - a few niche motherboards have it. You also can't just add it with a PCIe card, it requires special support from the motherboard.

Hopefully this might change with USB4 not sure.. be interesting to see what the lower end motherboards end up shipping support for.

lathiat··on LG washing machine sending 3.7GB of data a day
Yep, you're right. Agree with the other post - the randomly generated MACs have no manufacturer info.
lathiat··on LG washing machine sending 3.7GB of data a day
On the same WiFi network yes you can - it uses the same MAC on the same SSID. Remembers the "random" MAC after the first connection (and if you first connected to the networks before they added MAC randomisation in iOS14, it "remembers" the actual MAC of the device, so you didn't have compatability issues after the iOS14 upgrade).

So you can't use it to track devices between multiple SSIDs including when scanning for networks, but you can use it to persistently identify a device when connected to the same network.

lathiat··on Conditional Git Configuration
Do you need multiple files? Since you can store credentials for multipl users and host combinations in the same file.
lathiat··on Conditional Git Configuration
For the SSH part you can use ~/.ssh/config and it also has conditional stanzas like "Host foo.com" or "Host *.foo.com". Can set username, SSH Key, SSH Agent Socket (I use multiple SSH agents), etc.
