I use the following services:
- phone number: jmp.chat and a textnow number as backup
- email: fastmail
- search: kagi
- map: apple map
then

For ebook the situation is worse but for many technical books there's a way to purchase a DRM version.
Movie/TV series is unique in a way that there's no option to buy a DRM-free version.
1. keep my computer environment on a remote VPS. So I have an always-on machine with high-speed internet access. I read books, visit websites and write codes on the same machine. These are mainly text works so a mosh connection is enough. Occasionally when I want to view some images, I use chafa to preview the images. Because the machine is always on, syncing and backup is eaiser to do.
2. But sometimes either you are offline or the VPS is offline. In this situation I will switch to a raspberry pi zero (packed inside a mint tin). The computation resource is limited so do everything in cli/tui will make things faster.

"Each part upgradable and replaceable" -> super agree this point. You can clone microsd easily. So if microsd die, you swap the microsd. And if the board die, you just insert the microsd to another zero 2w and everything comes back the same as before. It's just like a "physical" vps.
I even built earlier zig compiler on zero1 because zig has no official 32bit arm release. I don't recall any significant wifi dropout with mosh.
Another work around is connect zero to a usb port of your computer/ipad/iphone and enable usb gadget on zero. Then you have a ethernet connect between zero and host that is more reliable than wifi?
However web developers go one side: the google side. Reason? They can do half the work and get twice the money. What a gain! They sell the web to google for their dirty money.
Web developers are so self-centered. You are developers, not users, don't speak like you are doing good things for users. You are just doing things for yourselves so you can extract money/data from your users.
Most web developers nowadays are just enemy of web users.
1. You can configure the zero2 so that when it is connected to the iPad with a usb cable, 2 machine will construct an ethernet over usb and you can mosh from iPad to zero2 without any external network. zero2 also get both the data and power from a single usb cable
2. zero2 is cheap to replace. Micro sd card is cheap and easy to be cloned. You don't worry about software or hardware loss.
3. zero2 is actually quite usable in headless/ssh mode. I used to do the same thing on zero1 and it's a little bit sluggish.
I actually have my entire setup stored in a mint tin box.
- rpi has GPIO pins
- many rpi boards' max power consumption is around the idling power consumption of a pc, rpi zero 2 can run off a standard usb A port of a laptop
- rpi zero 1/2, rpi 3A and rpi 4 has usb gadget mode which means it can be plugged to a notebook and two machines will connect over usb ethernet. That is especially helpful for debugging headless machines when in a hotel room (no wifi under your control, no ethernet cable).
- yes microsd is slow, but it's also cheap and easy to swap. That means you can: 1. if a board is broken then take out the card and insert it into another board. It will take you 2 minutes max and then everything will be exactly the same. 2. clone your entire microsd card as backup 3. you can swap different OS by swapping microsd. No need to partition your harddisk.
I do my development works on my iPad connecting to a remote VPS. And I always has a rpi zero 2 as my backup when I have no internet connection. You just connect ipad to zero2 using a usb-c to usb-c cable with a usb-c to micro usb adapter, then you can mosh from ipad to zero2 and keep programming. How wonderful!

It used to be. But not anymore. Web browser + js are too bloat for any serious documentation usage.
During this thought process I always make a plan of what open source software project I should donate, and debian is always one of the first several candidates.
Now I just need the money! (meanwhile I donate to debian anyway)
Of course the longterm solution is to get better legalization on privacy protection etc. But before that, I really prefer apple as a proxy between me and google/facebook/etc.
