Yes, and you can do so by saying "the article mentions that..." like gp pointed out.

laristine··on Connecticut parents arrested for letting kids walk to Dunkin' Donuts
Very good points. I've used this same strategy for decades and my interactions with the police have been nothing short of overwhelmingly positive. Of course, I remain wary at all times, maintain situational awareness, and always try to remember the police officer's name and badge in case I need to have redress later with their department or the court.
laristine··on Google layoffs Jan 20, 2023 – California WARN public records
I think parent's point is that "director" is the vanity title for these ICs. IC is a normal label found anywhere in and out of Silicon Valley.
laristine··on How PlanetScale Boost serves SQL queries faster
I deal in domains and stories like this still never cease to amaze me. In any case, I'm glad your company was able to sell the domain for a good sum back.
laristine··on Replace the “very” in your sentence
I'd just go with heartbroken. Or if we're melodic, melancholy.
laristine··on California man fined for selling maps of property boundaries without a license
Typically, these associations and boards are private and should not have power beyond their membership. However, this particular "Board for Professional Engineers, Land Surveyors, and Geologists" of California is part of the government, which unfortunately has power.

laristine··on “Secrets” about the consumer audio business you may find interesting
Another business major here. I don't have an online course to recommend, but the BUSN book basically taught me all I needed to know to get started in business administration. https://www.amazon.com/BUSN-Marcella-Kelly-ebook-dp-B079QD31...

After a decade working post graduation and nowadays being comfortable negotiating and managing millions-dollar projects, I still find the book covering all the fundamentals you need to know about modern business.

laristine··on I'm a fucking webmaster (2016)
Horrendous yes, but it was necessary, because without it we wouldn't have had the nice doctype HTML5 today. It addressed a lot of problems found in the early html and paved way for standardization and a path forward.
laristine··on Ask HN: Are there any good poverty simulator games?
"CHANGE: A Homeless Survival Experience" is one of the best games that gives you an immersive experience and challenge of an everyday homeless person.
laristine··on Best Font for Online Reading: No Single Answer
I like that the article about best reading font research itself has Arial as its font.
laristine··on ‘This game is so realistic it feels just like working overtime’
Crushing poor people was the reason I quit that game and some similar other games.
laristine··on Laravel 9
> File structure doesn't adhere to PHP league standard [https://github.com/thephpleague/skeleton] All PHP code should be in src directory or tests directory.

The PHP League Skeleton is only for packages. On the other hand, you use Laravel to create full applications so it's not applicable.

Even if somehow the Skeleton is so good its structure might be used for applications, we're under no obligation to follow PHP League's rules because they're just a private organization, not an authoritative source for standards such as PHP itself or PSR standards.

laristine··on Thich Nhat Hanh has died
The Dalai Lama is one of the closest.
laristine··on Let's Settle This
This is easy. At least for me and I bet many people believe the same thing as me.

I'm a diehard fan of BOTH Star Wars and Star Trek. And I can say Star Trek has better influence, especially to the fandom who understand accurately what its messages are.

laristine··on Self-Hosting Dozens of Web Applications and Services on a Single Server
I both maintain a server cabinet at home and rent VMs from providers. There are many reasons people don't self-host: noise, heat, dealing with hardware setup, etc. And if any of your service receives public traffic, you'll have to be very careful in configuring it because you don't want attackers to target your home network or the ISP/police to come at you for illegal traffic on your line.

$85/month is a lot of money, but given the number of services he runs on his server, each service now costs roughly $3/month, lower than the price of the cheapest DigitalOcean droplet.

laristine··on BusKill – A USB kill cord for laptops
Should we be concerned that no new canary notice [1] has been posted after the second canary [2], which promised to post the next one in June 2021?

laristine··on Cool URIs Don't Change (1998)
Not exactly though, it only redirects you to the HTTPS version if it was set up that way. Otherwise, it will show a broken page.
laristine··on Ask HN: What mental models do you use everyday?
It means everyone will die.
laristine··on Climate change: IPCC report is 'code red for humanity'
That _publicly listed company_ sounds like... the government.
laristine··on We didn't encrypt your password, we hashed it
Many comments complain how Troy explains about technical stuff like encryption vs. hashing and the users don't care about or understand it. However, don't forget that many readers of his blog are the technologically literate and can appreciate the nuances of this content. In fact, I find this particular post quite easy to understand for any beginners who want to learn about about password security.

The distinction between encryption and hashing can never get too much education, both for the end users and the more technical developers/sysadmins.
