laratied··on U.S. Depression Rates Reach New Highs
It is just a symptom of youth and social media addiction.

I forget what the stat was in 1999 but it is something absurd. Like 90% of the US was against gay marriage. In 2022, 71% were pro gay marriage.

I am gay and when someone says bullshit like this is just drives me crazy. As if a gay person in high school today can possibly relate to my experience of being gay in high school in the 90s. It is such an ignorant statement and view.

laratied··on U.S. Depression Rates Reach New Highs
I think the sitting part is the bigger variable.

It is hard to be happy when your physical condition is a mess.

Personally, I never have quite as good of a day as when I start my day with an hour walk. Literally never and I have performed this experiment over a thousand times now.

laratied··on The promise of crypto has not lived up to its initial excitement
Every community having their own currency and monetary policy makes no sense at a fundamental economic level.

If each member of my family has their own individual currency and monetary policy it would make economic sense for us to form a higher level structure and just have one currency and monetary policy for our whole family to make trade easier within our family. That process scales up to the level of country.

This idea failed because it doesn't solve anything economically. It actually just creates an economic bug.

laratied··on The promise of crypto has not lived up to its initial excitement
It has been a nice experiment to prove our intuition about deflationary currency and hording correct.

The other interesting aspect is in terms of Robert Shiller's narrative economics. What is most interesting to me is that the narrative economics and contagion were able to morph the currency narrative into something else so that the hording became a feature and not a bug in the narrative.

It is interesting how people can call BTC digital gold but disregard the downsides of gold at the same time in the exact same way deflation/velocity was ignored in the currency narrative. Gold was the "new" anti-central banking currency in the 70s that had its crescendo because of narratives and central bank policy at around a $3,200 all time high inflation adjusted price that we can't touch even 40+ years later. At the same time macro conditions were set up to take out that all time high price but BTC itself grabbed so much of that flow from gold.

Following the narrative dispersion that the all time inflation adjusted high for BTC is already in will be fun for years to come.

laratied··on Pandas AI
It is bullshit to call this pandas AI.

I use pandas all the time and could give quite a bit of feedback but not when you are basically trying to conflate and leverage the hard work of another project for yourself.

Not a big deal though because no one is going to use this tool as is.

laratied··on AI can’t do hiring because it lacks the data
I would even question how good humans are at deciding who they like working with better.

Even more so than war it is like dating and that is exactly why I question the above. Humans can't even tell better than random who is a good marriage candidate with nearly unlimited time to make the decision. There is a game theoretic poker match going on but we pretend as if both sides don't have cards they hold close to the vest and that there isn't this huge random element with how the cards come off the deck.

The flush draw hits and the hiring manager pretends that it was some kind of fortune telling skill they have.

It is really a great example of where we think of ourselves as this highly evolved society from the Enlightenment but using a process that is practically no different than something the medieval church would come up with.

laratied··on AI can’t do hiring because it lacks the data
The hiring process is basically a stochastic process with time wasting theatrical performances on both sides.

I honestly believe at some stage there should just be a random number generator making the selection. Especially if the final selection is between a couple of highly qualified candidates.

laratied··on Get started making music
I have hated Max/MSP for at least the last 15 years. Designed for 'institutionalized academic music' made me chuckle.

Autechre's Confield album is what it is good at doing. There is nothing more to do with the software after that album.

laratied··on Sam Altman goes before US Congress to propose licenses for building AI
If if someone doesn't agree with this, regulate what exactly?

Does scikit-learn count or we are just not going to bother defining what we mean by "AI"?

"AI" is whatever congress says it is? That is an absolutely terrible idea.

laratied··on Artists must be allowed to make bad work
Gauguin is the best example to me. I could never understand why anyone would think his childish looking paintings were so great until I seen some of his masterpieces in person.

The amount of colors is just flooring and mind bending.

laratied··on Artists must be allowed to make bad work
Picasso was worth $250 million at his death in 1973 dollars. 1.6 billion in 2022 dollars from selling his own paintings.

Painters at one point were rock stars. Just like today's rock stars are social media stars and not a group of guys playing guitar/bass/drum/vocals.

Artistic mediums have their moment in time and then become niche, historical and retro once their time has passed.

Marble sculpture is no less amazing than in times past. That mediums time in the sun though passed a long time ago.

Just like if you go to an art gallery that arranges the paintings in period rooms, it completely obvious when photography became an up and coming medium and its effect on painting at the time.

laratied··on Writing: Good career move, terrible career (2018)
Ronnie Coleman also can't walk anymore on his own because of those heavy weights.

That could certainly apply in this context if talking 20 years down the line.

laratied··on Writing: Good career move, terrible career (2018)
There is a huge selection bias when talking about something like this.

Anthony Bourdain's Kitchen Confidential is one of my fav books but he wrote two books before Kitchen Confidential that were utter failures. I am not sure how successful some of his later works were either.

Even a masterpiece that people would love could be a total failure with bad timing and poor marketing.

laratied··on Math prodigy runs market-making empire
The people who think retail is being harmed could not have traded 15 years ago.

Anyone who thinks things were better for retail back in the day with at least $5+ per side and some guy in the middle in NY or Chicago making a market on a floor is a moron. There is just no other way to put it.

Markets in 2023 is an absolute dream for retail.

laratied··on Digital Audio Workstation Front End Development Struggles
I have used Cubase for 25 years. A video conferencing app is just not the same category even remotely.

This is like trying to build Maya or Blender in a browser without an art background but having to deal with ms latency.

I just don't see the point. I don't even like Logic because the Cubase workflow is transparent to me at this point.

Even the idea of grabbing pirated DAW software to get an intuition is kind of absurd if you have never made music at all. It is exactly the problem I have had with trying to learn Maya. I can't even draw something on paper. The idea a dev with no background in the domain is going to add something to software that has been evolving from very specific domain knowledge in a highly complex and unbound domain for multiple decades is utterly absurd.

laratied··on Heart attack deaths drop over past two decades
I have gone to gyms since the early 90s.

30 years ago, so many guys had a bench and cheap weights in their basement that they barely used. Now that group just has a gym membership they barely use. Women had home VHS aerobic workouts they barely did instead of a gym membership they barely use. It has really just reflected the change in gym membership prices. My first gym was $75 a month adjusted for inflation and it was nothing special. The nice Golds Gym that was the alternative was $100 a month adjusted for inflation. It is just easier now to pay $15 a month and not use the gym.

I can't imagine we have a more fit population now. Maybe there is 10% more very fit people in the tail but the median is most likely much less fit.

What I notice most is going for an hour walk at sunset on a beautiful spring night in a nice suburban neighborhood, there is absolutely no one outside. Everyone is inside sitting. When I see a kid they are usually riding a motorized scooter to zoom between places to sit.

You also have to factor in that old people now grew up with so much more physical activity than young people now. I can't imagine the knock on effects of what all this sitting by young people will have once they are old.

laratied··on Ask HN: What's your favorite GPT powered tool?
Same for me. I think this will only be more true once I am using plugins as standard.
laratied··on Heart attack deaths drop over past two decades
No doubt. My father would be dead if not for the advances in treatment.

He also practically changed no bad habits after the heart attack. We have got better when the heart attack happens and better at keeping people alive who want to eat pizza and drink beer all the time.

laratied··on TikTok Feeds Teens a Diet of Darkness
Deleting social media was trivial for me as an old man. I don't really care that much what people are doing and if I missed out on party invites I doubt I would have went anyway. I haven't been on Facebook in 10 years and have never been on Tiktok or Instagram.

It is a completely different story though if I think of myself at 16. Teenage years were tough enough without anyone having social media. To be one of the outcast without social media is inconceivable. This is a total failure by adults to have put kids in this position.

The craziest thing to me is that we don't just put the same limits on children on Tiktok that they do in China. It is as if children were getting free, unlimited cookies sent to them in the mail and we do nothing because "cookies taste good". "What do you want me to do? Kids love cookies!"

laratied··on Google Bard blocks all European Union countries
Yes, why have any nuance in our speech. Should just go all the way though and say Google is Hitler. No reason to stop at evil if we are being hyperbolic.
laratied··on Ask HN: How do you personally define 'AGI'?
What humans can do that computers currently can not. Once computers can do that we will just call it an algorithm.
laratied··on My friends who cheated in interviews are getting promoted (2022)
That is simply not true. What you are ascribing to personal gain is just protecting against personal loss.

Ordering an extra test or an extra drug is mostly a doctor covering themselves from potential lawsuit.

laratied··on My friends who cheated in interviews are getting promoted (2022)
It is disappointing philosophically but I would imagine how the game theory of this works out strategically if really trying to play an optimal strategy is "always cheat".

There just such asymmetry between the risks vs payouts.

Sadly, I imagine your professor was simply wrong. Most likely even for you there is something you could cheat/lie about that would be practically undetectable and give a huge payout for almost no risk.

This is also why a level of a self delusion is an advantage in our system too. Then you get the benefits of cheating/lies without even knowing it or having to intentionally cheat/lie.

"Cheating ultimately cheats oneself" sounds right but just isn't reality.
