laratied··on Reasons not to become famous (2020)
I like Tim's podcast but he is not famous. Tim could go out to eat in any city and almost no one would know he is.

You can't claim to be famous if Pauly Shore has you beat 100:1 in terms of being recognized in public.

Tim is just a good hustler and self promoter of what he is selling.

laratied··on Reasons not to become famous (2020)
I like Tim's podcast sometimes but "after training in tango in Buenos Aires in 2005" has to be the most douche thing I have ever read and Astor Piazzolla is one of my fav musicians.

Hardly shocking though a guy who wrote the four hour work week is a bullshitter.

laratied··on How AI coding companions will change the way developers work
To be fair, it does strike me that not everyone will derive the same value from chatGPT.

I have always wanted to rap and it has wrote rap lyrics that are way beyond what I could possibly do myself. If I was Andre 3000 or Tupac though I wouldn't be impressed at all.

That is why asking experts in their domain what they think about chatGPT seems to miss the point to me.

laratied··on Rodney Brooks on GPT-4
I am at the point of "Burning Man sucks, don't come."

chatGPT? Sucks and a waste of time. Don't use it.

laratied··on The AI revolution already transforming education
It is not impossible that our current system is making people less mathematically inclined than a different system.

The narrative when this comes up always seems to be about defending the current system as if everything is going so great as is.

In the piano analogy mentioned, it does feel like we spend time drilling scales and tuning the piano at the expense of the average appreciation for music. A good system for producing a small amount of future piano virtuoso while most end up not wanting anything to do with music at all.

laratied··on Living sound forever: The genius of Wendy Carlos
I love Wendy so much and to me it is gross to even mention she is trans. It is the least interesting part of her.

Digital Moonscapes and especially Beauty in the Beast are two of my all time fav albums.

I am really not much of a fan of Switched-On Bach. Have to consider that people had not really heard synths before that album so I don't think it quite holds up.

It is a shame she is so reclusive. Her website use to be a wonderful source for news about her but hasn't been updated since 2009. In early 2000s she was sharing more online than most musicians and then basically vanished. I remember she hated youtube and would defend her IP to have things taken down more than any artist I recall when youtube started.

I always hoped to be able to see her play live but to no avail. I don't even know when the last time she performed in public. It must be decades.

laratied··on WeWork has frittered away $46.7B in value as the stock sinks below ¢50
I am pretty sure "WeWork is a platform" was actually something they pitched. Or maybe it was WeWork as a service.

WeWork labs was the most genius thing though. Build a tech lab straight up for no other reason than to have a tech lab for the optics of having a tech lab.

laratied··on WeWork has frittered away $46.7B in value as the stock sinks below ¢50
Timing is everything and they had bad timing.

The time for this company might still not have arrived yet. I just don't see what they could have done at the time and either way Covid would have bankrupted them.

laratied··on People who die by suicide want to stop suffering, not to stop living
You will get a ton of denial about this but you aren't wrong.

On the other hand it is really easy to not get married and not have kids. Then the equation is quite different. 40s and 50s isn't all that different than 22. I would even say better in most ways.

Your vision of marriage is even kind of romantic still. The married guys I know it is more like depression because of separation and knowing the wife is fucking a Tinder guy while your kid is sleeping in the next room. They even know her date outfit because she posts the picture on social media.

I have two friends right now that this is their exact life. One of them I thought was the absolute perfect couple at 30. Women know their value and aren't going to waste their life with the flame having gone out.

laratied··on People who die by suicide want to stop suffering, not to stop living
Same here. I fear the random nature of a heart attack even more.

My ideal is almost to take enough water into the woods to starve in the woods. To really stare my death in the face and experience it slowly.

Clinging to life in a nursing home is a fate worse than death to me.

I am sure this all depends on having kids or not. Being child free gives many more options.

laratied··on The Future of Programming – Interview with Richard Eisenberg
The small claims analogy works for May 20th 2023. I can't remember when I first heard about word vectors and the king – man + woman = queen. That was so mind blowing and now look what we are talking about?

However long ago a person first heard about king – man + woman = queen, project that amount of time forward. Any prediction for that date on how things are going to be is pointless. A good bet though is that making complex software is not going to be harder on that date than today.

laratied··on The Future of Programming – Interview with Richard Eisenberg
I just can't imagine we don't get a new programming language at some point that is a more precise subset of English but is closer to English than say python.

I mean previously we needed absolute precision in a programming language because there was nothing to disambiguate natural language. chatGPT's ability to disambiguate natural language is unbelievable. We will figure out a way to leverage that ability at some point in a programming language to the point that maybe it won't make sense to even call it a programming language.

Making software is going to get much easier. Denial is the most human of coping strategies with change.

laratied··on Venture Predation
To be fair, we really don't know what would have happened if the entire financial system collapsed in 2008.

This was the Faustian bargain we made. For us, I think it would be hard to argue this was a raw deal as opposed to living the last 15 years dealing with a depression or who knows what.

Once on this path we will just keep kicking the can down the road and let the unborn pay of it eventually.

laratied··on Wall Street Built a $370B Business Cloning Quant Trades
Bloomberg is just trash at this point when it comes to articles. Of course no one would consider that a quant strategy besides a Bloomberg reporter. That is hardly surprising to me though.
laratied··on With new trade deal, Big Tech wants to be above the law
We do it because we have had the money and military to do so but I think you will see this go in the other direction over the next 20 years. It is hard to see how the money situation does anything but get worse and worse.

We are also pretty much at the point of missing military recruitment numbers by 20-25% every year now.

laratied··on Cargo Cult AI
IMO it is just a cultural reflection of our general safetyist cultural.

Safety has become a near sacred value. Near my house a new light at a cross walk has a computerized voice that says "stop stop stop" , "walk walk walk". A cross walk to a dead end street with basically no traffic ever.

I can almost hear the city official who had it installed "if it saves just one child's life..." even though it is a near certainty no accident ever occurs at that cross walk either way.

AI safetyist are basically that city official to me. What you posted is besides the point. It is about lowering a probability no matter how remote that probability is and even if the whole exercise is basically pointless. The gods of safety will be pleased by our offering.

laratied··on Visa and Mastercard agree to lower average credit card interchange fee below 1%
It will never happen anyway.

We are never going to ban cash in the US because government officials need the anonymity of cash just as much if not more than your local drug dealer.

laratied··on WhatsApp could disappear from UK over privacy concerns, ministers told
Of course not but this is a perfect example of why this type of democracy is a terrible idea.

Putting something like that to a vote was itself insane and stupid.

laratied··on U.S. prison labor programs violate fundamental human rights, new report finds
We had this debate post 9/11 with "enhanced interrogation techniques". No one cared.

Even when you called it "torture" the majority were perfectly fine with it after 9/11 in polling data.

laratied··on Apple Restricts Employee Use of ChatGPT, Joining Other Companies Wary of Leaks
They are working on ChatGPT Business. "for professionals who need more control over their data as well as enterprises seeking to manage their end users.”
laratied··on Apple Restricts Employee Use of ChatGPT, Joining Other Companies Wary of Leaks
GPT-4 is less full of shit than most people I know and I don't think it is even close.

I have always found the knock that it confidently answers things it really doesn't know even if wrong quite hysterical. That exactly describes some of the smartest people I have met in my life.

laratied··on US Supreme Court leaves protections for internet companies unscathed
Or imagine claiming that pay phone companies were liable in 1980 for facilitating mafia crime activity.

It is so stupid that no one at the time even considered it.

laratied··on GPT-4's Solution of Egg Balancing Puzzle Convinced Microsoft That AGI Is Closer
Whatever is on that list of tasks though we will rationalize why it doesn't count once the computer can do the task.

"It is just doing next word prediction, duhh"

The whole line of thought is muddled thinking and not bothering with exact definitions.

Even the mental image of moving the goalpost is wrong because we haven't bothered to define the goalpost or even what game we are talking about.

laratied··on TikTok is now banned in Montana
The PLA has published brilliant books on how to beat America in a non-kinetic war but Americans in general don't like to read.

As someone who thinks Unrestricted Warfare is one of the most brilliant books I have ever read, the idea most have not read this book in the US military is quite laughable.

Imagine people having no issue with the Soviet Union delivering a free daily newspaper to US teenagers in 1960. The level Americans have their head up their own ass is unbelievable.

laratied··on Bosses of failed US banks refuse to hand back millions of dollars in pay
Angelo Mozilo is the poster boy for this. He paid a personal fine.

He made $470 million running Countrywide into the ground and had to pay a fine of $67.5 million.

Retired to live out his old age worth about $600 million.

Who is the fool in this equation? Hard to say it is Angelo.

laratied··on Lately I've been using timers daily
I buy packs of old school stop watches from amazon. They are practically disposable.

There is something really nice about having the timer disconnected from all other usability as a separate device and at the same time not having to care if it is lost or damaged.

laratied··on I Still Use Windows 95 (2008)
I have xfce and KDE plasma installed. If you turn off everything in desktop effects for KDE, I can't tell any difference between xfce and KDE in terms of performance on an old 4 core i5 with 16 gigs of ram.

The only real difference is that KDE is much prettier. I almost never boot into xfce.

laratied··on Epstein Assisted Noam Chomsky, Botstein with Financial Transactions
I can't stand Chomsky's politics but that doesn't change the fact what he is saying is correct.

It is a really bad look for someone with Chomsky's reputation but to go beyond that is witch hunting. Pretty straight forward witch hunting.

laratied··on Sam Altman isn’t the answer to regulating artificial intelligence
No one seems to care about this obvious absurdity.

We are not bothering to regulate AI controlling a 3500lb death machine that goes from 0 to 60 in 2 seconds but we are worried about the dangers of a chatbot.

So typical of our society to be captured by the more compelling narrative and ignore actual reality.

laratied··on What were the worst jobs for poor Romans in Ancient Rome?
Working with the sewage system is what first came to my mind.

As far as germs that is so modern. Ignaz Semmelweis was considered a moron for suggesting that doctors wash their hands between handling dead bodies and delivering babies.

He died in 1865 with the establishment believing he was basically spreading misinformation.
