lappet··on What is the size of Yemen? (2024)
Great article. Somehow, this gives me hope that curiosity can still be rewarded in this age of information at our fingertips.

This is really cool! So peaceful.
lappet··on Ask HN: What are you working on? (August 2026)

lappet··on Ask HN: What are you working on? (August 2026)

lappet··on Ask HN: What are you working on? (August 2026)
Thank you, that is a good suggestion
lappet··on Ask HN: What are you working on? (August 2026)
Nice. Is it vibe coded? I am looking for a good resource for learning kannada if you know Tamil, but with a focus on spoken language.
lappet··on Ask HN: What are you working on? (August 2026)
Yeah tbh I don't know if it is easy to do that. Any suggestions?
lappet··on Ask HN: What are you working on? (August 2026)
Yes, definitely on my list. For now you can try the map view and zoom into your state. Thanks for the feedback!
lappet··on Ask HN: What are you working on? (August 2026)
I have been working on and off on https://www.whichtemple.in

- it is a collection of ~ 2700 temples across India, with images sourced from wikipedia

- it shows you a random temple each time you visit

- it has a map view of temples across India

So this is just the tip of the iceberg. I am trying to build a catalogue of all temples, starting with India, and expanding on to the rest of the world. The focus is on temples originating from Indic religions like Hinduism, Jainism and Buddhism.

I have personally discovered many cool temples that I have never heard of, but I am struggling on how to gamify this. Feedback welcome!

lappet··on How Lewis Carroll computed determinants (2023)
Yeah I believe modern trigonometry and the terms sine and cos also trace their origins to Sanskrit through Arabic. It's a shame that ancient/medieval India contributed so much to science and math but hasn't been able to innovate in centuries past :(
lappet··on Ask HN: What Are You Working On? (June 2025)
hey there, I spent some time working on something very similar, but I am based in the US! I was able to import receipts from Safeway & Costco here, using private APIs. But since stores here don't really support OAuth, and using a private API may not be the best long term approach, I paused my effort. I would love to chat if you are interested. I used react to build a prototype.

lappet··on Ask HN: Are there any apps to track grocery prices in local stores?
Some of the big chains in my area provide online receipts: safeway, costco, target, etc.
lappet··on Ask HN: Are there any apps to track grocery prices in local stores?
I am working on an app to track grocery purchases from online receipts. My goal is to track the effects of inflation on prices, and build something like Mint, but with itemized transactions from receipts.
lappet··on Ask HN: Do you still self-host a blog? What's your publishing stack?
Hugo, s3 and CloudFront. I use GitHub actions to push to s3, that is my deployment pipeline.
lappet··on AI killed the tech interview. Now what?
Do you have network access? I would pick ssh.
lappet··on Making the Tibetan language a first-class citizen in the digital world
I know Bengali and Assamese use a Tibetan script, anyone know how similar is it to the one Tibetans use for their language?
lappet··on Ask HN: Small teams and solopreneurs, how are you hosting your apps?
This is not for a business, but I am working on a side project that uses node.js + sqlite and the entire stack will run on a single Lightsail instance ($5 per month)
lappet··on Tell HN: Ever think of applying to YC? Do it this weekend for S24
holy moly, if you setup a kickstarter for this, a bajillion desis would support it. curious though, are they going to be frozen samosas?

Pretty cool. I really like your website! How does the sonification of space sounds work?
lappet··on Ask HN: Books you read in 2023 and recommend for 2024?
I loved Teixcalaan #1, and I really need to read the second one. Thanks for the reminder!
lappet··on Portuguese Orange, Persian Portugal
Right, but the root of "orange" is apparently Proto-Dravidian, as mentioned in the article
lappet··on Portuguese Orange, Persian Portugal
Interestingly enough, Orange is called "oranju" in Tamil, a Dravidian language.

> what always struck me as paradoxical is the nationalist / cultural pride that a lot of immigrants tend to display.

Also an immigrant, and I have observed that some immigrants tend to be become more conservative when they move. Or perhaps they have stopped evolving when their peers in the home country have moved on. I think this might be partly due to dealing with the trauma of displacement, and partly due to lack of diversity in thinking. I have mainly noticed this in a generation older than mine.

I really miss VB and Flash. Wish we had something like that today.

Is there anyone prominent in the tech world who is pessimistic? I am tired of this relentless optimism regarding new technologies.

whoa, I made a fake virus too! Mine would freeze the user's screen, and display a progress bar that their hard disk was being deleted. I shared it on download.com and got a few thousand downloads. VB6 was so much fun as a teenager. If you all know anything that is close to it please let me know!
