lannisterstark··on How web bloat impacts users with slow devices
eh, idk. This is your anecdotal experience, there are others (like me) who have different ones

>It honestly sounds like a made up concern from people who've never actually lived in a developing country.

I once loaded a site that loaded approx 324mb "Super resolution" image (I knew it was high res, but I thought it was like 30-40 mb at best). Took care of 1/3rd of my monthly data in a single page load.

lannisterstark··on Hackintosh is almost dead
>These days I want to -use- the computer, not spend time trying to convince it to work.

This but with LLMs lol.

lannisterstark··on How to become a pirate archivist (2022)
This is such a childish response to the comment. "wah if you criticize us go do your own thing we really dislike taking feedback" is absurdly naive.
lannisterstark··on WhatsApp Messaging Interoperability
>They don't provide the same level of privacy that the Signal protocol does, though

Can you elaborate on this please?

lannisterstark··on WhatsApp Messaging Interoperability
Sigh

Just...use Matrix or XMPP or something ffs. The open protocols _already exist_.

lannisterstark··on Kagi and Wolfram
Anyone using their own searx-ng, the metasearch engine? Have you tried Kagi? How is it comparatively when it comes to quality of results given that with searx I can customize the engines and such.

>Should I be allowed to own C4 explosives and machine guns?

as someone who can do both...lol. You thought this was some gotcha? "Please sir can I have more" begging from the govt is really weird when many, many people already do.

Yes. Why not? You can already blow up Tannerite and own automatic firearms in many nations.

This is a disingenuous argument. People who willingly give up what should be their civil rights are a weird breed.

>Do we just allow people to have access to technology of arbitrary power as long as there exists >= 1 non-nefarious use-case of that power, and then hope for the best?

Yes, that's what we do with computers, phones etc. Scamming elderly people has become such a wide bad use case with computers, phones etc since their invention.

We should ban them all!

Fairly rich coming from an account where all it does is call others hacks.
lannisterstark··on Ask HN: Is anyone considering cancelling their ChatGPT subscription?
I just use the API. It's much more cost effective and doesn't have stupid limitations of 30 gpt4 queries per 4h or what not.
lannisterstark··on Hetzner switches to new billing model
>just take my money

and run MITM services*, yes.

lannisterstark··on Notes on paper (2023)
>Use quality pens that produce deep black lines, not cheap pens that produce off-black or hollow lines.

Eh, nah. Nothing wrong with off-blacks. Gray colors as well as other colors are fantastic when written with a fountain pen, even muted ones.

lannisterstark··on Pleasures by Aldous Huxley (1920)
Minimizing pain is the basic point.

You're essentially arguing on pedantic points. We know what they're trying to say.

lannisterstark··on Pleasures by Aldous Huxley (1920)
Eh I don't know. Sometimes people do a lot of what you say "ohyou don't need medication" when in reality, if they did, they wouldn't be here in this condition and it wouldn't get this worse.

There exist plenty of I don't like taking medicine people.

lannisterstark··on BYD launches $15,000 EV
>Yes, but there is no incentive for Person A to choose a brand new Corolla when it's $22K and the alternative is $15K

"Hey I know Corollas last a while, and wtf is this weird-ass company I've never heard of? I'm sticking with Toyota."

^ Incentive enough.

lannisterstark··on Capital One Is Buying Discover Financial
Loathed? Lol. American Express is one of my favorite actual providers.

lannisterstark··on Apple confirms it's breaking iPhone web apps in the EU on purpose
Ah yeah man EU is totally gonna break up apple.

Some of y'all need to be reminded to be realistic.

lannisterstark··on Apple confirms it's breaking iPhone web apps in the EU on purpose
Or they could just not.
lannisterstark··on Show HN: Reor – An AI note-taking app that runs models locally
>I feel the urge to fill a file with a minimum threshold.

Honestly that's more you subjectively than database v files.

lannisterstark··on Cloud Egress Costs
Doesn't backblaze also just send you a hard drive with your data on it as long as you "pre-pay" for it and then refunds you when you return it?
lannisterstark··on How to Study (2023)
This will be fairly unpopular, but we idolize _all_ teachers too much. Wait - Let me qualify that. Teaching, like all professions, has people who are not good at their jobs or just want to coast through. Hell there are doctors who do just that, despite medicine education taking a huge part of their life - but there are less of them for that reason. Teaching doesn't require as significant year sink as medicine tends to.

Not all teachers are good. Some are just atrocious ones with ego, and a lot are there just for the tenure.

lannisterstark··on Mozilla names new CEO as it pivots to data privacy
>Now if I disagree, I'm not in good faith?

It's not necessarily that, it's more like your points in the thread come across (to me at least) as a bit of sealioning.

Not everything needs a "what if it was you in that position, your mom, your friend, your sister" POV. Sometimes people are just bad at their jobs, and it's ok to criticize them for it.

lannisterstark··on Mozilla names new CEO as it pivots to data privacy
>Is that intended to be persuasive? Intimidating? Does it make the point stronger or weaker? Are we wiser for having read it?

Not OP, but it was probably intended for you to start discussing points in good faith.

lannisterstark··on Starlink's laser system is beaming 42 petabytes of data per day
>did produce many of its own ships.

Problem is that we're talking about how it works currently. US also used to send its own specifically owned spacecrafts into space. But it hasn't in ages.

lannisterstark··on Starlink's laser system is beaming 42 petabytes of data per day
Like all other US defense companies, why not? Do you think US Navy produces their own ships?
lannisterstark··on The first human received an implant from Neuralink yesterday
There's nothing wrong with any of them, given they're walled from public access/internet safely.

Smart lights with a protocol such as zigbee are lifesaver for example. Doesn't even need internet. Also work with normal switches etc.

Also nothing wrong with VR or LLMs either lol.

lannisterstark··on Breaking Free from DRM: Hacking My Air Purifier
Eh, I guess I'll disagree.

Automations allow me to run the purifier at Medium/High speed for certain times a day, even when I am not around. Other than that, they are always on Auto - so they produce minimal noise.

However, certain times a day for period of 15-30 mins or so, they run at Medium/High so they can do certain number of air changes in a room of x SQFT.

Having a 'computer' also allows them to detect when a room suddenly becomes less 'sanitized' and ramp up the 'automatic' to an appropriate level.

lannisterstark··on How Meta is advancing GenAI
We should ban computers because it allows scammers to scam people.
