lanna··on Accidentally exponential behavior in Spark
It looks like transform(tree.left) returns an Option[Tree] already (otherwise the code would not type check) so the entire if-else in the original code seems redundant and could be replaced with:

    val transformedLeft = transform(tree.left)

My 6yo daughter has exceptional talent and interest for Math. She's already discovering some fundamental theorems for herself (number theory, algebra, geometry). Does anyone here know any resources to help her development?

Anything is safer than to run C code directly ;)

But what if one doesn't remember the `apropos` command?
lanna··on The MIT License, Line by Line
With all due respect, you are just trying really hard to be pedantic. Your convoluted, contorted, corner-case example does not invalidate anything that was said here. You even had to resort to the word "rounded" to make it work. Without "rounded", most would be below mean.
lanna··on The MIT License, Line by Line
GP comment did not imply that half of elements are below average. It just said that _some_ have to be. By definition, we cannot have all elements be above average: at least one has to be below.

lanna··on Osborning the Mac, or not
> When they did the hardware transitions, they had a compatibility layer (Rosetta) that was supported for 5 years after the transition. But with the 32 bit change, the announced that it would no longer be supported in 2017, and dropped support in 2019, just 2 years later.

You are comparing the time a technology was supported with the time it was announced a technology would no longer be supported. 32-bit apps were supported in 64-bit Mac OS systems for at least 7 years.

lanna··on Ask HN: Software for producing terminal-based tutorials?
Shameless plug, and a little tangential to your question, but I created an interactive training/presentation tool based on the Scala REPL: https://github.com/marconilanna/REPLesent

I believed someone created a Python port inspired by it.

lanna··on Mathematicians Discover Prime Conspiracy (2016)
"Odd" is just a word that means "not divisible by two". There is truly nothing special about a prime not being divisible by two. I could equally say "3 is a legendary prime god amongst countably infinite non-divisible-by-three primes", "5 is a legendary prime god amongst countably infinite non-divisible-by-five primes"... The only difference is that we do not have special words that mean non-divisible-by-three, non-divisible-by-five, etc.

In this regard, I don't see 2 as a special prime. Saying "2 is the only even prime" is the same as saying "2 is the only prime divisible by two", which, by definition, can be said about any other prime.

lanna··on Mathematicians Discover Prime Conspiracy (2016)
Why do you think 2 is alien? How could the fundamental theorem of arithmetic be stated without 2?
lanna··on Most Massive Neutron Star Ever Detected
> Black holes have the same gravitational effects as any other equal mass in their place. They will draw objects nearby towards them, just as any other planetary body does, except at very close distances to the black hole. If, for example, the Sun were replaced by a black hole of equal mass, the orbits of the planets would be essentially unaffected. A black hole can act like a "cosmic vacuum cleaner" and pull a substantial inflow of matter, but only if the star from which it formed was already having a similar effect on surrounding matter.

You should be asking yourself what will happen to the average lifespan of those who won't die prematurely in a car accident.

The problem is the marketplace and the companies that will demand the skills when one is job searching.
