lanius··on Tokyo street fashion and culture: 1980 – 2017
The photos are all black and white until 1984, when they're all suddenly in color. Was there any particular advancement in color photography in 1984?
lanius··on Sega releasing every console game for free with ads on mobile
The console is supposedly for the kid, not you. I've never met a 4-year-old who didn't like Nintendo games.
lanius··on Walmart to Buy Bonobos, Men’s Wear Company, for $310M
Aren't they known more for their pants? Their athletic fits are perfect for me.
lanius··on Pistol sights
How does bullseye/precision pistol compare? I would like to compete eventually, and I'd hope that how much money you can spend is less of a deciding factor than skill.
lanius··on Mary Meeker’s 2017 internet trends report [pdf]
I use uBlock Origin on Firefox for Android without root.
lanius··on Malicious Subtitles Threaten Kodi, VLC and Popcorn Time Users
Is Media Player Classic affected?
lanius··on Mods keep 'Sins of a Solar Empire' PC game vibrant five years on
Reminds me of Warcraft 3. The last expansion came out in 2003, and the mod community was still going strong into at least the late 2000s when I was still playing.
lanius··on Microsoft To-Do Preview
I missed the news that Microsoft acquired Wunderlist in 2015. I'd have assumed the access to additional infrastructure would've resulted in higher uptime. Instead, I've experienced enough outages in the past couple years to seriously consider making my own to-do list.
lanius··on When “Dumb Pipes” Get Too Smart
Has the WebCore scheduler improved since?
lanius··on Beating the World’s Best at Super Smash Bros. with Deep Reinforcement Learning
I'm impressed it beat the likes of S2J and Zhu. I wonder how it'd fare against the Five Gods?
lanius··on XPS9350-macOS – macOS patches for Dell XPS 13 9350
He certainly looks very young, judging from his Github profile picture. Wish I was that smart at that age!
lanius··on The closest I've ever come to falling for a Gmail phishing attack
Wow. Imagine if they had just used a few hundred extra spaces.
lanius··on Ultrasound Tracking Could Be Used to Deanonymize Tor Users
Are cheapo mic and speakers even capable of operating at those frequencies?
lanius··on Ask HN: If you were to switch career, what would you do?
Tailor. I just sew as a hobby, but I enjoy being able to make clothes fit better.
lanius··on Sierra PDF Problems Get Worse in 10.12.2
My decision to stick with Yosemite is once again vindicated. I actually wouldn't mind upgrading to El Capitan, but the app store refuses to let me download it.
lanius··on Famed poker pro with ‘remarkable’ $9.6M scheme has to pay it back
"Sun trained herself to identify aberrations along the left or right margins of the card backs, no wider than 1/32 of an inch"

That is insanely impressive. Anyone have an example of what these look like?

lanius··on Bose Hearphones
I'm not alone! I always assumed I had something like the auditory equivalent of color blindness.
lanius··on How a Zara Coat Went from Design to Fifth Avenue in 25 Days
Personally I've never had issues with fits from Bonobos. The actual measurements match up with the advertised sizes.
lanius··on Ask HN: What simple tools or products are you most proud of making?
Very useful. The only other feature I'd want is the option to display URLs along with the titles.
lanius··on Google Pixel pwned in 60 seconds
$520,000 in a day. I wonder how many man-hours were spent prior to the competition?
lanius··on Denial About Workflow Among Camera Companies
Somewhat relevant, I used my DSLR to take pictures in a country 8 timezones away.

Later as I was going through my pictures, I unfortunately realized that the EXIF DateTime field is a string, meaning I had to batch-convert the timestamps into the country's local time. It was a completely unnecessary annoyance, why couldn't EXIF just use Unix time?

lanius··on 25 Years After Junk Science Conviction, Texas Admits Sonia Cacy's Innocence
Gerald Hurst and Chris Connealy are true heroes.
lanius··on DeepMind and Blizzard to release StarCraft II as an AI research environment
>Competitive AI in broodwar already can destroy the best humans

Who do you mean by "the best humans"? I've never heard of top-tier progamers such as Flash, Jaedong, Bisu, etc. losing to AI. In fact, I doubt any B-teamer or above would lose to an AI in a Bo3.

lanius··on DeepMind and Blizzard to release StarCraft II as an AI research environment
I can't wait to see how far DeepMind can go in this area. I was initially skeptical that AlphaGo could defeat top human players, but then it happened. Who knows, perhaps one day AI can compete against progamers in GSL!
lanius··on DeepMind and Blizzard to release StarCraft II as an AI research environment
Unfortunate. I personally would love play against an AI with strong game sense as well as insane micro a la https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IKVFZ28ybQs
lanius··on Show HN: Quick JavaScript Tetris – Based on Yesterday's Show HN
>I set my deadline as the time before I had to start studying for my midterm

Ah, procrastination ;)

lanius··on Most drivers who own cars with built-in GPS systems use phones for directions
Haven't tried built-in GPS, but I prefer using my phone over my standalone GPS because it's much faster. My standalone unit takes forever to boot up, has too-long delays when navigating between screens, and overall is just frustratingly sluggish when trying to use.
lanius··on Medical school can be brutal, and it’s making many of us suicidal
Interesting, I assumed that the field would become more selective over time. Or is it because just getting accepted to medical school itself is already extremely competitive?
lanius··on 4 a.m. Is the Most Productive Hour
I expected the article to have some kind of research to back up this claim. The anecdotal evidence presented could just as easily apply to 3 or 5 a.m.
lanius··on Nvidia – significant increases in parental benefits for employees
