landosaari··on The hottest new perk in tech is freedom
When you are jobless employers want to see how desperate you are.

I went through a 4 hour "technical interview" where it was line by line questioning of my CV.

Then to be told I do not have the technical skills.

They may even ask borderline illegal questions to see if you push back.

I had one interviewer ask me how many kids I would be bringing into the country. Is against EU law?

landosaari··on Record whistleblower award went to a tipster on Ericsson
This whistleblower program is discussed here [0]

I learned it does not matter what citizenship you have to participate.

landosaari··on Ask HN: Is is possible to self study undergrad mathematics from books?
There is an Open Source curriculum [0].This consists of: MOOCs, videos, pdfs, etc. It should provide you with a guide of what/where to study.

Neil Sainsbury posted their own list of books [1]

Alan Kennington provides a 10 steps learning mathematics[2]

Another source to get an overview of a topic [3]

landosaari··on Ask HN: What is your biggest problem? (2022)
Jobless. The dreadful feeling of being unable to positively contribute to something.
landosaari··on Ask HN: Tech to help elderly people balance while walking to reduce falls?
Would companies who make cycling airbags/protection be useful?

landosaari··on Ask HN: Tutorials written with heavy dependencies
For ML not in python: maybe these videos will help [0] the datasets are here [1]

The author walks through the basics (Linear regression, Naïve Bayes, etc) using Julia. The parameters and output are better explained than what I have found with python equivalents.

landosaari··on Ask HN: How's the job hunt going? (For those laid off)
Actively looking. Jobless and homeless since completing my technical degree from a Nordic country. Subsisting on ~3€/day.

The responses have been: not a cultural fit, wasn’t the perfect match (German speaking responses), overqualified (mostly from western countries), under qualified (from countries like Czechia, Poland, Romania, etc.) for junior positions.

Getting interviews has been difficult and sparse. Contributed to FOSS, and keep learning programming/higher maths. Hope is low.

landosaari··on Ask HN: Does anyone have a great public domain list of programming books?
Of things not listed.

This site could help https://open.umn.edu/opentextbooks/subjects/programming-lang...

landosaari··on Tell HN: Microsoft's captcha is pretty hard
What is this trying to solve? Not NLP, or image classification.

It is significantly harder than Rosetta Zoo [0] or similar projects.

landosaari··on The most-regretted (and lowest-paying) college majors
How does this compare with having a technical degree and not being hired?[0]

landosaari··on Ask HN: How to behave as an immigrant with russian background?
"The Soviet Union was an ethnically diverse country, with more than 100 distinct ethnic groups."[0] This was from 1960's the world is more blended now. What is something you think would make people think 'Russian' versus any other?

landosaari··on Am I the only person who can’t get a job?
I am in a similar situation:

How long have you been applying? Python is nebulous.

Does this mean data science: pandas, matplotlib, numpy, etc.

Or machine learning: tensorflow, scikit-learn, etc.

Others: openCV, sympy, etc.

Knowing this I think would help others provide better feedback.

When I receive a rejection email (which is nice), I ask what I should work on. Last 4 companies said they did an in hire instead, and they would like to retain my information. I would like to get to the interview process.

A lot of other positions I applied to close on the last Friday of the month and then reopen on the first Monday of the next month. So it appears (as an outside observer) as though there no human in that loop.

@jstx asked "What companies and positions are you applying to?" I need to reflect and reconsider where I have been submitting my CV.

landosaari··on Can't handwrite, any software alternative for math?
Writing maths in LaTeX is the preferred choice. I used Texmaker https://www.xm1math.net/texmaker/ on GNU/Linux the license it GPL-2.0-or-later. Overleaf https://www.overleaf.com/learn/latex/ can be used online, but this is not for me.

A nice python package is handcalcs. https://github.com/connorferster/handcalcs This can be used with jupyter notebooks see this as examples https://medium.com/@zumaia/python-calculations-in-jupyter-li...

landosaari··on Ask HN: Software you hate but can't replace?
I used https://meet.jit.si/ for a language meetup.

I opened one tab for the group which had 10 people some sharing video I then opened 3 more tabs for specific languages (English, German, and Russian)

The quality was still good. It was the same as being in a crowded area a train station, but it worked.

I have had interviews with zoom and teams, these were not as good. With less people.

landosaari··on Ask HN: How do I get in touch with US/EU developers? (attempting to network)
I would caution this.

Used my life savings to get a degree from a Nordic country (one in a lifetime opportunity)

Although closer to data science than CS.

Last year I had 3 EU hiring managers heavily hint it was the school that cost me the position. One from Sweden stating that it was a death knell to my career. On the plus side I was getting interviews.

No networks were lasting, just people asking for answers on the assignments. Maybe it works better in the US? I cannot speak to this.

landosaari··on Ask HN: Re-entering the industry with a history of disability
I agree completely with this statement. I received a technical masters from a Nordic country.

For me, nothing would be considered an upgrade. It was a major loss in nearly every aspect.
