landa··on Ask HN: iPhone Camera on indicator
It would be pretty bad if it didn't activate immediately. This actually gives me more confidence in iOS. Any time the camera is accessed, even if for one frame, the light turns on and stays on even after you're done.
landa··on Ask HN: iPhone Camera on indicator
No this is irrelevant -- he's just turning on the selfie camera by briefly swiping sideways. It's completely harmless.
landa··on Ask HN: iPhone Camera on indicator
You accidentally briefly swipe left while unlocking, causing it to flash the camera, which causes the camera indicator to stay on for a while. You can reproduce it by locking your phone, touching the screen once, then swiping a centimeter left then back.
landa··on Ask HN: How Do You Clean and Structure Data at Work?
I also have to do this kind of work (with financial data), and actually built a product to make it easy. It's currently in closed beta but please send me an email (listed in my profile) if this is truly a frequent pain for you and you'd like to try it out.
landa··on Ask HN: What are the changes you made in your life and never look back?
Me too, only 5 years ago.
landa··on Intermittent Fasting – a coders personal experience
No it doesn't. It works because of insulin regulation.
landa··on Ask HN: What happens to the global financial system if the USA has a coup?
> actual coup

> will be elected

An election is not a coup just because you disagree with the elected peoples' views.

landa··on Ask HN: Why are checking/savings interest rates so low?
Yes, so they take risk, and they should get a return. You will get your money no matter what, so your return is close to nothing. There's no greed or deception here – it's just market forces. If you want a higher return, buy a bond like the bank.
landa··on Intermittent Fasting – a coders personal experience
Get ready for the "calories in calories out" people to come after you. Intermittent fasting also helped me lose around 15 pounds but in around half the time with a 20 hour fasting window.
landa··on Ask HN: Why are checking/savings interest rates so low?
Money doesn't automatically grow – you need to take risk to get a return. Your checking account takes no risk, so your bank shouldn't really pay much for you to keep your money in your account.
landa··on What Is the Difference Between Get vs. Post vs. Put? Mainly Post vs. Put?
It's more about convention. Typically, PUT overwrites data, whereas POST adds data. If you PUT to /users/3 you overwrite a user, whereas if you POST to /users you add a user.
landa··on Ask HN: To use or not to use React?
React made me 10 times faster, and I'm not exaggerating.
landa··on The Great Crypto Grift May Be Unwinding
> cool kids on r/Bitcoin

I don't use Reddit or any other social networks. This is the only site I post anything on. My suggestion to put a trade on instead of just saying stupid things on the Internet comes from institutional trading culture.

Anyone can say anything. Almost nobody backs it up with money.

landa··on The Great Crypto Grift May Be Unwinding
If you really believe it doesn't have "any value at all" then I invite you to sell it short. That's a free $30,000. The nice thing about markets is that you can express your opinion, and that market opinions without corresponding positions can be ignored.
landa··on Ask HN: Hiring managers why don't you post salary range in your job postings?
Beyond a certain level, salary doesn't matter. There's a base salary and there's upside, so if you create something profitable, you'll get paid significantly more. In finance, bonuses are many multiples of your salary, dependent on your performance. It's similar in tech, where the RSUs are how you make your money.

You can't post bonuses/equity, since it really depends on your performance.

Your post assumes that you're doing some task, but with most of the jobs people on this site go for, you're paid to be creative and commercial and not to just perform some job.

landa··on Tell HN: Have just discovered that I can use any key as Ctrl on my keyboard\
The MacBook Pro Touch Bar taught me to use caps lock as escape. I recently got the new MacBook Pro 16" that has an escape key, but I still use caps lock now.
landa··on Show HN: Algorithmic trading for everyone
My company offers exactly this kind of product. We’re currently offering it to institutional investors, but if you’re interested, would love to talk and discuss your use case. My email is my username at alum dot MIT dot edu.
landa··on Bill Ackman loses $400M dumps entire Netflix stake after just 3 months
No, not really. I'm just explaining how a real trading desk works. If you express an opinion without putting a trade on, that opinion is worthless.
landa··on Bill Ackman loses $400M dumps entire Netflix stake after just 3 months
Another way to say that you don't want to put your money where your mouth is.
landa··on Bill Ackman loses $400M dumps entire Netflix stake after just 3 months
If you think it's overvalued then you should be short the stock. We've seen how that played out for other shorts.
landa··on Ask HN: Does a static site need anything more than a simple VM running a server?
Firebase Hosting is really good for this kind of thing. You can even expand it later to add more dynamic content.
landa··on Ask HN: Ethics of a carnivore diet?
Who cares about emissions, seriously? Imagine millions of humans were being slaughtered instead of animals. I'm glad you're thinking about this, but the big problem with eating meat is not emissions, it's the suffering of millions of sentient beings.

For all others: Please go ahead and downvote this comment. You're not a lion hunting prey for food. You're just a guy buying a dead animal at a store.

As for your original question, I became a vegetarian 5 years ago and it's only had a positive impact on my health.

landa··on Goldman told TWTR Elon’s $54.20 offer was too low but has a sell target at $30
Goldman Sachs is more like a collection of companies (divisions) than one company. Further, there is often a Chinese Wall between divisions preventing them from having access to one another to prevent insider trading.
landa··on Ask HN: Which password is more secure?
The second password can be compressed almost to nothing, whereas the first password can't be compressed at all. This to me says that the first password is a lot more secure.

landa··on Impressions from a first-time Mac user
"Also, unlike Windows or Linux, you can’t “maximize” a window using the green “zoom” button, it will only make the current window fullscreen (and again, on its own desktop)."

Just hold option when you click on the "zoom" button.

Your other complaint, about Alt-Tab, is just a preference. I actually prefer this behavior over Windows.

landa··on Turo Requires a Driver's License Number and Credit Card to Show Full Price
The $2k deposit is only for really expensive cars.
landa··on Ask HN: How are you supposed to use LeetCode?
It actually comes down to a few simple algorithms, only one of which I didn't see in college. These kinds of water problems use a "monotonic stack" if I remember correctly. That's the algorithm that I didn't see in school.

In reality, after you practice a lot of these problems, you realize that there are only a few broad categories and that most of them just use what you learned in school. You just have to practice to become fast.

landa··on Turo Requires a Driver's License Number and Credit Card to Show Full Price
To go against all the negative comments here - I love Turo and use it all the time. The comment regarding money laundering doesn't even make sense - Turo charges for insurance and fees, it would be an expensive way to launder money. The fact that you don't see the final price right away is annoying but not uncommon. It's usually way cheaper than traditional car rental companies, anyway.
landa··on FDA Approves First CRISPR Cows for Beef
You're 100% right about this. What's going on right now with mass slaughter of animals will hopefully end one day soon and be looked back on as the darkest time in the Earth's history.
landa··on Ask HN: How likely are we to see a financial crash this year?
I'm doing what the parent comment suggested. The line of credit should be margin - you borrow against your stocks. If you use Fidelity, you can call them and ask them to lower your interest rate, and it can actually get really low.
