lambada··on Hacking Kia: Remotely controlling cars with just a license plate
A Kia authorised dealer being able to look up any Kia has some very useful benefits (for the dealer, and thus Kia).

If a customer has moved into the area and you’re now their local dealer they’re more likely to come to you for any problems, including ones involving remote connectivity problems. Being able to see the state of the car on Kia’s systems is important for that.

Is this a tradeoff? Absolutely. Can you make the argument the trade off isn’t worth it? Absolutely. But I don’t think it’s an unfathomably unreasonable decision to have their dealers able to help customers, even if that customer didn’t purchase the car from that dealer.

lambada··on Oracle, it's time to free JavaScript
The site explicitly says they tried to get Oracle to release the trademark before, and that this is their final attempt at doing so before filing wigh the USPTO.
lambada··on Tesla will sue you for $50k if resell your Cybertruck in the first year
How does this hold up against the First Sale Doctrine in the US?
lambada··on Browsers that support end-to-end encrypted chats on Messenger and Facebook
I can't fathom why Safari would be supported on messenger.com but not Facebook.com/messages.

I also have no idea why Private Mode would make a difference in Firefox.

Perhaps someone here might be able to shed some light?

lambada··on Japan ends distribution of AstraZeneca Covid-19 vaccine, discards 13M doses
The article says that they were expired. Using expired vaccines sounds very very risky to me.

The article also says that previously a lot of unexpired doses were given to other countries.

lambada··on Voyager spacecraft begin to power down
And that exact anecdote is contained in the article. > In fact, the smartphone comparison is not quite right. “The Voyager computers have less memory than the key fob that opens your car door,” Spilker says.
lambada··on GitHub waited 3 months to notify about potential compromise
Given it existed for 5 days and you’re only now finding out about it, it sounds to me like it was perhaps a bug that was fixed without realising the full impact of it, or perhaps without realising it made it to production; and only an audit that happened later caught it.

Not ideal by any means. I’d be curious to know if my theory is correct or not.

lambada··on Tolkien’s Little-Known Original Drawings for the First Edition of “The Hobbit”
In that case I guess that the images in the article aren't the 'never before seen' (in 2011) ones that are meant to have been included in the publicised book.
lambada··on Tolkien’s Little-Known Original Drawings for the First Edition of “The Hobbit”
The post is from 2011, so i would expect them to have entered much wider circulation now.
lambada··on Is Twitter biased against conservatives? A Study
As the paper says in respect of politically motivated definitions of mis-information

> Helping to address concerns about potential liberal bias among fact-checkers, we also examined untrustworthiness ratings from politically-balanced crowds of demographically representative (quota-sampled) American laypeople recruited via Lucid (15), rather than professional fact-checkers.

lambada··on Ask HN: Has anyone leveraged GDPR to overturn automated bans?
From memory I believe FAANG etc all _claim_ that appeals you lodge are reviewed by a human.

Now if you don’t believe them then you’d need to take them to court and show why you think that’s not the case.

Which I guess means my question is why don’t you believe them and how likely is it that they are lying when they claim thy appeals are reviewed by a human?

lambada··on Apple said to be preparing for iPhones without SIM card slot in 2022
Your mobile network provider demands you to install an app? Thats… unique in my UK based experience. Over here any provider apps are entirely optional and just a convenience AFAIK; and phones you’ve bought outright (or reached the end of the contract period on) are unlocked (or you have the right to have them unlock it).

Thats why this is a big change and potnetially bad news for many smaller UK operators who don’t currently have eSIM support baked into phones

lambada··on Protonmail was identified as spam in Gmail
How much of that difference is because your external email provider is silently swallowing the most egregious spam such that you don’t even realise they’ve done so? I suspect the folks who run their own are monitoring all the email with none being missed from their stats.
lambada··on Jellyfin: Free Software Media System
Do you have more details on this? I’ve found that it seems to have been made ‘unsupported’ in 2018, but theres still plugins that apparently work as of this month, and can’t find anything about the plugin function actually being disabled wholesale?
lambada··on GitHub Actions checkspelling community workflow GitHub_TOKEN leakage via symlink
https://docs.github.com/en/github/administering-a-repository... contains details for configuring it on a repository basis. Looks like you can require it for new github accounts XOR first time contributors XOR all forks.

It's also configurable at the organisation and enterprise level, if those are relvent to anyone.

Organization settings: https://docs.github.com/en/organizations/managing-organizati... Enterprise settings: https://docs.github.com/en/github/setting-up-and-managing-yo...

lambada··on GitHub Actions checkspelling community workflow GitHub_TOKEN leakage via symlink
If the PR is from a fork, then a repository maintainer needs to approve it. By default this is for first-time contributors, but is configurable https://docs.github.com/en/actions/managing-workflow-runs/ap...

NB: I've never played with configuring it.

lambada··on Only Windows 11 Pro will let you install Windows 11 with a local account
Windows 10 (any version) doesn’t let you install it without a microsoft account these days - it used to, but they removed that function during one of the updates. They do let you transition to a local account after install though. That caught me by surprise when i had to reinstall a fresh copy of Windows 10 at one point

So a version that does let you install with just a local account right off the bat is a strict improvement from my point of view.

Maybe the article authors were unaware of that change to the Windows 10 install process - it certainly would explain the odd slanting.

Edit: interesting, from the replies it looks like you either have to not connect to the network or say you are going to join a domain (which was untrue in my case) that explains why i couldn’t find the option then!

lambada··on Prince Philip has died
If you had read the article the parent comment linked you would know she does actually get some say in how some laws are drafted. She doesn’t, practically, have a veto once both houses of parliament have approved the law but she is sometimes consulted by the government on laws it is drafting to submit to parliament and she does make suggestions that are sometimes incorporated
lambada··on Riot Squad Cops Open Up About Disastrous Response to Capitol Riot
I think that's the media you're consuming rather than any silence from the FBI etc.

https://www.fbi.gov/wanted/capitol-violence is a fairly comprehensive overview including:

- links to lists from the justice department of who has been charged with what crimes, and supporting documents.

- a list of photos from footage showing people the FBI are seeking further information about, along with a general category as to why (assault on media / assault of a federal officer).

- a whole list of press releases the FBI has put out about the investigation.

lambada··on Porting Firefox to Apple Silicon
It wasn't Apple they were trying to contact, it was a random anti-virus vendor who were flagging all new Universal Binaries as malware.
lambada··on The Fediverse is better than regular social media
That doesn't move your data to another instance though. All Mastodon supports is - Putting a 'I have a new account' notice on your old account - Exporting your toots. They do not support importing toots, which means if the instance goes boom your old toots are, for all intents and purposes.
lambada··on USB-C was supposed to simplify our lives, but instead it’s a total mess
Interestingly in the UK, Nintendo _explicitly_ label it as a USB-C port. I'm not sure if they do or not elsewhere, but they definitely claim it's a USB-C port 'for AC charging' over here.

lambada··on Keybase iOS Has a Backdoor?
Gotta say, I didn’t expect Keybase to do this after they announced their partnership back in 2018[0]

Automatically attesting keys with no user consent? Not good. This implies you are happy and willing to add arbitrary attestations to a users profile. For now you presumably have a rationale. But this is a can of worms I don’t think should have been opened.

lambada··on xkcd: 562k Accounts breached according to haveibeenpwned
They have forums where you can discuss the comics and other things.

lambada··on DeleteFB: Selenium script to delete all of your Facebook wall posts
Yep, that looks right from his Wikipedia article. One count of making false statements to a congressional committee. It’s not immediately obvious to me when he was charged/convicted of that though. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Michael_Cohen_(lawyer)
lambada··on DNS over Tor
I missed this when it was first announced. Does anyone know if the Tor Browser by the Tor folks has this built in or available as an option? Or whether the Tor developers themselves have thoughts on using .onion based DNS Servers?
lambada··on Prince Harry and Meghan took my Instagram name
Just because it’s relevent... although steam officially states that the account name is unchangeable; if you contact support with a good reason and get the right person they can and do change your account name to another free one of your choice.

I have uh personal reasons for having done this and I know of others who have as well.

I’m not sure why they don’t roll it out more wisely - though I can say it did cause a couple of bugs until I signed out and back in on every steam device.

Each steam account does have atleast 3 internal unchangable account numbers that are exposed through APIs for developers to integrate with and use for things such as enforcing bans etc.

lambada··on iRobot (Roomba) shares customer data with Google and other affiliates
Actually with fitbit there is a reason. You can install the fitbit app on multiple devices, and your tracker can sync with any of them. The internet connectivity is basically so they can keep a single source of truth so that your different devices don't get out of sync. This becomes even more true if you have multiple fitbit devices on one fitbit account (or indeed if you have it set to use your phones inbuilt pedometer stuff)
